Madam Bai and her daughter were growing more and more accustomed to their new forms. They moved swiftly, floating over the ground like the wind, their auras growing ever fiercer.
Kill him!
Kill him!
The lust for revenge in their hearts swelled and intensified.
And what about Su Xuan? Tonight, he'd had drinks with Cen Haonan. When he got home, he simply showered and went to bed, sleeping soundly. He had once helped the woman in the red dress and the aunt from the market, receiving a mysterious gift in return that calmed his mind, allowing him to fall asleep the moment his head hit the pillow.
"We're here!"
"We're here!"
Before long, Madam Bai and her daughter arrived at the gate of Su Xuan's home, their aggression palpable. The once-unscalable gate and walls now seemed like no obstacle at all. They could just pass straight through. On their way, they had phased through countless walls and buildings, even passing through cars as they sped by.
"Hmph!" Madam Bai's eyes glimmered with red light as she took the lead, slamming headfirst into the red-lacquered gate.
But the unexpected happened. The moment she struck the gate, she was repelled by a tremendous force. It was as if the gate of this Top-Scholar Estate was imbued with a righteous energy, forbidding any evil from entering.
Madam Bai charged again, only to be thrown back once more. Repeated attempts all ended in failure.
"Bai Wei, you try," Madam Bai said, left with no other choice.
Bai Wei wasn't as impulsive as her mother. She lifted her hand toward the gate, but it stopped about ten centimeters away, unable to move any further. A strange sound began ringing in her ears, as if countless sages were chanting scriptures directly to her.
"Mom, it's no use," Bai Wei said, shaking her head. "It seems this house doesn't welcome us."
"Let's find another way in!" Madam Bai led her daughter on a circuit around the property, but no matter how they searched, they couldn't find an entrance. Su Xuan's home seemed to be protected by an invisible barrier.
"A house like this..." Madam Bai had to sigh in grudging admiration. "Its energy field is too powerful. Filthy things like us can't get in!"
Filthy things... Bai Wei silently mouthed the words, then blinked. "Let's go in through the sewer," she said to her mother. "The sewers are also unclean. Maybe we can get in that way."
Ugh... Madam Bai, who was accustomed to a refined lifestyle, was repulsed by the idea. A sewer? How disgusting! There would surely be rats and all sorts of insects inside.
Seeing her mother's hesitation, Bai Wei said, "I don't care about any of that anymore. Why should you?"
At that moment, Bai Wei seemed to reveal the darkest parts of her soul without reservation, no longer maintaining the poised demeanor of a well-bred lady.
"Alright!" Madam Bai nodded grimly. Together, they found a manhole cover on the side of the road and slipped through it.
The sewer was dark and damp, filled with the constant sound of flowing water. Sure enough, rats squeaked and scurried about. All kinds of unnamable insects crawled along the slick walls. The mother and daughter could only ignore the filth as they searched for a way into Su Xuan's home. They felt utterly humiliated. To be reduced to this pathetic state, crawling through sewers like rats and insects... It was so degrading.
After nearly half an hour, they found two possible routes. One led through a drainage channel into Su Xuan's courtyard. The other was more direct: through the sewage pipe and up out of a toilet inside the house. But they didn't know which room belonged to Su Xuan. Unwilling to risk emerging from a toilet, they chose the first option.
What if someone was on the toilet... The image is just too horrible to contemplate!
In the courtyard, Great White, who was sleeping in his doghouse, suddenly sensed something. His eyes snapped open and focused on a drain near the pond, which was covered by a metal grate. It was from there that Madam Bai and her daughter emerged.
HISS!
The moment they crawled out, they were stunned by the luxurious scenery of Su Xuan's home. A spacious courtyard, a lush green lawn, artfully placed rocks and ponds, and beautifully delicate trees. There was even a giant panda. It was like they had stepped into a paradise or a fairy tale world. Compared to Su Xuan's Top-Scholar Estate, their villa was nothing but a slum.
Madam Bai couldn't help but exclaim, "Damn, this is freaking awesome!"
Bai Wei, however, pointed at Great White. "Mom, I think it can see us!"
Madam Bai's head whipped around and she watched in shock as the giant panda slowly stood up. It stared at them with huge, unfriendly eyes and began to walk toward them.
Madam Bai pulled Bai Wei back a step. How is that possible? It's a living creature; it can't possibly see us! Then she scoffed at herself. We're already dead, what is there to be afraid of? Besides, it's just a bamboo-eater!
Great White took a couple of steps toward the mother-daughter duo, then suddenly stopped. He tilted his head, sauntered over to the edge of the pond to lap up some water, and then padded back to his spot to go to sleep.
"See? It can't see us," Madam Bai said, a smirk playing on her lips. She seemed to have found some small sense of superiority.
"Mom, look over there! I think that's a person!" Bai Wei suddenly cried out, pointing in another direction.
Madam Bai looked over, blinking hard. She saw the phantom of a young man sitting on a rock by the pond, absorbed in a book. The apparition seemed to notice them. He put down his book, shook his head at them, and then vanished into thin air.
My god! A ghost! Goosebumps instantly erupted on Madam Bai's spectral form. This house has ghosts!
Instinctively, she grabbed Bai Wei, ready to flee the way they came, but then she suddenly burst into peals of laughter.
"HAHAHA! HAHAHA! I almost forgot! I almost forgot what *we* are!"
Bai Wei began to laugh along with her. It was probably the funniest thing that had happened to them since they had died.
But Madam Bai's laughter died in her throat as she panicked again, pointing with a trembling hand. "Daughter, what's going on over there?"
This time, a chill ran down Bai Wei's spine. In a corner of the courtyard, a swing was moving back and forth, back and forth. It was the two young siblings' favorite toy.
There was no wind. And they saw nothing on the swing. Yet it continued to sway.
This is seriously creepy.
"Don't look!" Madam Bai hissed. "This courtyard is too strange!" She hastily pulled her daughter into a random room.
The moment they entered, Bai Wei screamed. Madam Bai cried out in shock right behind her.
They saw a little girl lying on a bed, a slick green snake coiled around her body. The snake's eyes gleamed coldly as it hissed, its tongue flicking. It looked as if it had bitten the little girl to death. On another bed lay a boy, a massive toad squatting on his stomach. The toad's skin was covered in dense bumps. It puffed out its cheeks and then suddenly darted its tongue out to lick its own eye. It looked as if it had bitten the boy to death.
The snake and the toad suddenly swiveled their heads in unison, their cold eyes locking onto the mother and daughter.
