Starting With a Reef [Global Survival]

chapter 25 - Day 9 of Survival 04

Who would’ve thought hiring a “guard” would turn out to be a full-on fish beast slayer?Yun Luohe returned to the hut to toss trash. As soon as she heard the prompt that the dagger was completed, she quickly retrieved it and sent it over to Mu Zitang. Not that she was feeling charitable—she wasn’t giving the dagger away for free.No one knew better than she did how valuable a dagger truly was.Even if Mu Zitang had provided the most important material—Refined Steel.“Sister Yun, what’s this?”Mu Zitang looked puzzled when he received the dagger. He hadn’t expected Yun Luohe to just hand it over to him.“I’m giving you the dagger, but it’s not a gift. You’ll use it to kill fish beasts. Over the next few days, I’ll need your help with a few things. Consider this your payment.”“No problem! Just tell me what needs doing!”“I need: shells, bamboo, hemp rope, leather, black metal shards, lime, clay, sand, and all kinds of plant seeds. Keep an eye on the trade center for me. If you see good prices, buy them.”Yun Luohe had far too much to do every day—there was no way she could constantly monitor the trade center for materials. And she lacked everything. Weapons, apparatus, they all required materials that had to be replenished frequently. Some rare materials, once listed at a decent price, were snatched up instantly. By the time Yun Luohe checked, it was either dumb luck if it was still available, or the leftovers that were overpriced and unwanted. In short, she needed someone to do this for her.Mu Zitang was currently the best choice.Yun Luohe added, “If you get too busy, you can assign it to someone else. I’ll compensate any materials you trade away with goods of equal value.”“That’s it? Easy! Don’t worry. We’ve got plenty of people in the Association who can handle this. I’ll find two to help out, and I’ll keep watch myself.”Yun Luohe: “Good. Just send me the materials you gather once you’re done tonight.”If all went smoothly, maybe it wouldn’t take much longer for her to upgrade. She wondered whether Wu Jing and the others had already reached Level 5.This time the material requirements were huge. Yun Luohe still had a long way to go.—Today’s trash haul was substantial.Yun Luohe kept repeating the same motion for an hour until her hands were numb. But the payoff was big.[Wood ×71, Fiber ×85, Cotton Cloth ×4, Plastic ×68, Clay ×4, Sand ×18, Lime ×7, Burlap ×4, Bamboo ×21, Leather ×5, Glass ×19, Cabbage Seeds ×3, Potato Seeds ×2, Toilet Paper ×1, Fishing Line ×1]Seeing her backpack packed with materials—it felt amazing. The Trash Can’s experience shot up rapidly, and the lottery refresh was ready again.[Trash Can Level 3][EXP Required for Upgrade: 1126]She couldn’t wait to draw again before even putting away the loot.[Lottery Draw Successful][Obtained: Lime Recipe]Here it was![Lime: A crucial construction material; can also be used as a soil amendment to improve soil structure.][Crafting Materials: Shell or Stone; must be fired in a Furnace.]Get one thing, and you realize you're missing another.Yun Luohe was used to that by now.Next step: figure out how to get a Furnace. In hindsight, tossing all those shells into the Trash Can for recycling into Sea Stone had been a mistake. Shells had far more uses than she realized. Not only could they be used to craft glass—they could also be fired into lime.If it weren’t Lucky Day, players could only get three shells per day. There still wasn’t any other method to obtain shells. To get more, she’d have to trade for them.Still, Yun Luohe suspected: with shell demand this high, there had to be another way to obtain them—she just hadn’t discovered it yet.Among the supplies Mu Zitang had just sent, over twenty shells were included. She didn’t toss them into the Trash Can.She kept them.Currently, her backpack had 48 shells. But that was still far from enough. She hoped Mu Zitang could help her trade for more.It likely wouldn’t be easy. There was no way she was the only one who realized how valuable shells were.If more people started trying to trade for shells, the price would skyrocket.Right now, prices in the trade center changed daily. Two days ago, one purified water could get seven units of fiber. Today, it only got four. That was because more players were selling water—and people were slowly becoming less desperate for it.Yun Luohe stopped overthinking and drew another lottery.[Obtained: Beehive Blueprint][Beehive: Basic beekeeping tool used to raise bees and harvest honey.][Must be placed near flower-planted soil.][Crafting Materials: Redwood ×5, Coal ×5, Iron Ore ×5]A beehive—finally. And she had so many flowers ready……now she could build the beehive. She tucked the blueprint away, satisfied.Suddenly she heard a strange sound from outside—different from usual.Yun Luohe quickly ran out to check. The reef was littered with fish meat. The air was thick with the reek of blood and fish—it was hard to describe, and even with the rain, the stench wouldn’t wash away.Ròubāo had already slain more than a dozen mutated fish beasts. But it was precisely this pile of corpses and stench that attracted a massive creature.A Mutated Giant Octopus. Its tentacles were as thick as Yun Luohe’s thighs, five to six meters long. Its body was enormous, sprawled across the reef with its limbs thrashing wildly. It had already flung Ròubāo aside—clearly, Ròubāo was no match for this beast.Yun Luohe’s expression turned grim. This would be a tough fight. She raised her bow and aimed at the octopus, loosing three arrows in succession. Her aim was decent this time—all three arrows hit their mark. Then again, with something this massive, it was hard to miss. After taking the hits, the Mutated Octopus went berserk. It released a burst of black ink and flailed all eight limbs around, smashing into the wooden hut with loud bangs.Yun Luohe dodged in time—otherwise she would’ve been hit too.But as one tentacle whipped toward her, she grabbed it, used the momentum to ★ 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 ★ leap forward, and slashed it with her dagger, severing it before it could wrap around her.Though Ròubāo couldn’t win, it was still unwilling to give up. It leapt forward again and fiercely bit into one of the octopus’s limbs—only to get flung aside once more.Yun Luohe panicked and quickly said, “Ròubāo, get back inside. Leave this to me.”“Meow! Meow…”Ròubāo was unwilling and still pounced toward the octopus. It was grinding its teeth in frustration—no matter what, it was determined to kill this damn octopus.Seeing its stubbornness, Yun Luohe could only sigh inwardly. Alright then—let’s make it quick. The fastest way to kill this octopus would be to stab directly into its head with a weapon. But the dagger was too short—and this octopus was particularly large.Yun Luohe’s eyes flickered. She quickly thought of a solution. She pulled out her bow but took only the arrows. While not as sharp as the dagger, arrows were long enough to pierce through the octopus’s head.Clenching an arrow in her mouth, dagger in hand, she moved behind the octopus—but it noticed her. Several tentacles lashed out at once, wrapping around Yun Luohe. The strength of those tentacles was immense. She felt herself constricted tightly, almost unable to breathe. Her face remained calm. She slowly sawed through the tentacle binding her with the dagger, and step by step, forced her way forward.A burst of ink sprayed out—nearly hitting her face. Yun Luohe raised her hand just in time to shield her eyes.Taking advantage of the moment after the ink spray, she plunged her dagger into the octopus’s body and forcefully sliced a long gash. The octopus convulsed wildly. As its tentacles flailed again, she caught the arrow from her mouth, jumped up, and stabbed downward into its head—twisting and grinding the arrow in deep, reducing its brain to mush.Soon, the massive octopus was reduced to twitching limbs. But that was just a delayed nerve reflex—it was already dead.[Killed: Advanced Mutated Fish Beast. Dropped: Furnace Blueprint.]A Furnace! What a great find!Grinning with delight, she picked up the blueprint and checked its contents.[Furnace: Can smelt, fire, and process various materials. Used to smelt metals into ingots, and produce Cement, Lime, and Glass.][Crafting Materials: Deep Sea Flint ×10, Sea Stone ×10, Iron Ore ×2]Perfect.So iron ingots were made in the Furnace. Not only that, but even Cement, Glass, and Lime could be produced with it.Clearly, the Furnace was an essential item for player development. Its construction requirements weren’t complicated—just Flint, Sea Stone, and Iron Ore. All stone-type materials.Killing the giant mutated octopus didn’t just yield the blueprint—it also dropped a lot of octopus meat.Yun Luohe couldn’t be bothered to manually butcher it. It was way too big.She let the system handle it and obtained:Mutated Octopus Meat ×50.And all of it was high-quality meat.Plus the heap of fish beast corpses—all could be butchered for meat.Yun Luohe couldn’t stay calm anymore—she laughed out loud.Off to the side, Ròubāo was still angry. Though it hadn’t suffered any real injuries, it was in a foul mood. It couldn’t understand how it had been tossed around by a stinking fish and failed to win.Yun Luohe said, “I’ll grill some of the meat for you later—it’ll be delicious.”Upon hearing that, Ròubāo meowed twice. Who knew whether it was pleased or not?“Come inside and warm up. No point staying in the rain.”“Meow…”Yun Luohe gathered up all the fish beast corpses and system-butchered them, along with the loot they dropped.[Mutated Pufferfish Meat ×15, Mutated Grouper Meat ×20, Mutated Swordfish Meat ×5, Mutated Mackerel Meat ×20, Mutated Lionfish ×2, Mutated Bass Meat ×15, Offal ×30]Lionfish had to be cooked whole—it couldn’t be butchered. These fish weren’t big, but their dorsal fins were venomous. To eat them, you had to cook the entire fish and carefully trim the spines.Yun Luohe had never eaten this kind of fish before. After thinking it over, grilling them whole seemed the easiest option.[Iron Ore ×8, Glass ×6, Clay ×4, Cucumber Seeds ×1, Coal Collector Blueprint ×1, Tree Fertilizer Recipe ×1, Burlap ×6, Cotton ×4, Chocolate Cookie ×1]The dropped materials were all excellent.Lucky Day really was a good day—clearly, the system had arranged for players to receive rewards.Satisfied, Yun Luohe returned to the wooden hut. She dried her hair with a towel while organizing the materials.[Coal Collector: Place beside a stove to automatically collect charcoal after burning. Five Wood burned yields one unit of Coal.][Crafting Materials: Iron Ore ×10, Black Metal Shard ×1]Before, collecting charcoal meant waiting for the fire in the stove to burn out and then manually retrieving it. With this device, it would be much easier—it functioned like a coal furnace. Whenever she needed coal, she could just take it from inside. Very convenient.[Tree Fertilizer: Accelerates tree growth. Less effective on fruit trees.][Crafting Materials: Fiber ×10, Animal Offal ×1]This was easy to make. She had been wondering what to do with all the fiber in her backpack—turns out nothing goes to waste. It’s just that she didn’t have enough blueprints and recipes yet.Seemed like she should keep everything—who knows what might be useful later?Time to build a few more storage boxes. But first—she had to prioritize building everything she had a blueprint for.Especially the Furnace.Looks like it was going to be another late night, but Yun Luohe was in high spirits.Today had been full and fulfilling. While making apparatus, she also cooked a little something—an extra meal for Ròubāo.Ròubāo had worked hard today, helping her kill so many fish beasts.First she grilled some octopus tentacles, then prepared a seafood soup. She bustled around cheerfully, completely absorbed in her tasks. It was already past eleven, but the chat channel was still buzzing.“Anyone got any hemostatic medicine? Got hurt fighting fish beasts. I’ll trade a blueprint for it!”“What kind of blueprint?”“Weapon or furniture blueprints—either one.”“There were way too many fish beasts tonight, no way I could kill them all. I’ve already holed up back in my hut.”“Seriously! Feels like such a waste not to fight them—they might drop rare materials! Someone said they just looted an Island Entry Token!”“My friend just got a Heavy-Duty Sewing Machine Blueprint. So jealous! But then, his Luck stat is really high. If it were me, no way I’d get something that good.”Yun Luohe was grilling octopus legs while reading those messages. She clicked her tongue twice.Comparing yourself to others only made you feel worse. Truly, comparisons were poisonous. She’d thought her loot today was already great, but seeing what others had gotten—it still didn’t quite stack up.Still, she had them beat in quantity. What she gained were all essential blueprints and recipes. And besides, most others had only managed to kill one or two fish beasts all night. She and Ròubāo had taken down nearly twenty.Just turning all that fish meat into food and trading it would net her over a thousand units of base materials. That was more than satisfying.Even so, now that the Heavy-Duty Sewing Machine Blueprint had appeared, that meant it was in circulation—so she'd definitely get her hands on one eventually, just maybe not right away. What she really wanted, though, was another Island Entry Token. But who knew where to find one?“Sister Yun, I’m back! Good thing you gave me that dagger, or tonight would've been a disaster!”“I killed five fish beasts—went totally berserk! It was like I was possessed! Might be 'cause of my trait—Bloodthirsty.”“But man, what bad luck… the Island Entry Token I got turned out to be a fragment!”Wait—a fragmented Island Entry Token?Yun Luohe: “Show me.”[Damaged Island Entry Token: Possibly broken due to some unknown cause. If repaired, it may still be usable.]“Unreal. Bad luck just hands me this mess to deal with!”Yun Luohe could practically hear the frustration in Mu Zitang’s voice. She almost laughed. “Anything else drop?”“Got ten materials, and one Bone Meal Recipe.”[Bone Meal: Used to craft fertilizer and dye. When mixed into grass seed, can encourage wildflower growth. Feeding it to chickens can increase egg production.][Crafting Materials: Animal Bone ×1, Coal ×1]Not bad at all.“Well, even just getting that much Mutated Fish Meat is already great,” Mu Zitang consoled himself. “All thanks to your dagger, Sister Yun! That thing is insane!”Mu Zitang sent her half of the fish meat.Yun Luohe: “No need—you keep it for yourself.”“If that damaged Island Entry Token’s no use to you, I’ll trade you for it.”“What’s there to trade? It’s yours.”
