Reincarnated as a Lizard

Chapter 44: Strange Encampment Intelligent Monster?

Rustle~

Waking up at the sound of something moving around in the bushes next to the tree she was sleeping inside of, Scaly cautiously glanced out in the direction where the sound had come from. Trying to figure out what it was that had woken her up… And if it was something edible, it had after all been quite some time since she had last eaten…

Luckily for her, the culprit who had woken her up just so happened to be a small and defenseless looking rabbit.

[Forest Rabbit, lvl 7]

[Description: A stronger than normal rabbit that can be found living in forests and in rare circumstances, jungles. Taste great and is often hunted by adventurers and stronger monsters for its meat.]

Reading through its description, Scaly was reaffirmed about her first impression that it was a rather defenseless rabbit- No, it was not just a defenseless rabbit, but was also a delicious one! Perfect for her to satiate her hunger before starting to explore the forest for possible targets to hunt down and increase her own strength.

Squeak?

Unaware of the fact that it had been targeted by a certain scaled predator lurking not too far away, the forest rabbit tilted its head in confusion as it glanced down at an especially delicious looking stalk of grass that seemed out of place when compared to the ordinary looking grass surrounding it.

Whoosh-!

SQUEAK!?

Ptsh-!

[Gained 35 Exp]

However, before it had a chance to investigate the delicious stalk of grass further, Scaly made her move, as she jumped out from her hiding spot and directly used her water magic to conjure a water spear that pierced through the soft body of the forest rabbit before it could react. Killing it before it had a chance to run away.

Chomp~!

Not wasting a second following the death of the forest rabbit, Scaly began happily eating. Feeling a sense of amazement over just how delicious it tasted without any preparation. Making her wonder for the first time since she had come to the world if the humans also ate the monsters in the same way she did without any preparation.

After all, with how delicious it tasted without any preparation, there shouldn't be any need for the humans to cook the monster meat or prepare.

Ah! I forgot; humans will get sick if they eat this kind of thing raw… Wouldn't they? Or maybe because they are adventurers and far stronger than normal humans, they won't die from something like that and can also eat it like I do?

Lost in her own thoughts as she enjoyed the forest rabbit, Scaly soon finished the last bit of it before she began to explore the forest for monsters that she could fight.

Making sure to remain cautious of her surroundings in case she ended up running into any of the humans she had seen on the island who happened to find themselves inside the forest and any powerful monsters that would be difficult for her to deal with.

In the end, it took her over an hour of searching through the forest before she finally found the traces of a monster different from the forest rabbit and similarly weak monsters.

The tracks in question were located around a small fireplace of sorts that had recently been put out with a few shabby tent looking structures next to it that had been torn apart by something that she believed to be a large and powerful monster.

As for the inhabitants of the shabby tents, it seemed to be another kind of monster that resembled a human, albeit a bit taler. The main difference compared to humans being that they were covered in a furry hide making them resemble some kind of wolf or dog like creature, while their skin was a greenish-gray color and had a head resembling a wolf of some kind.

No… Not a wolf… Another, weirder kind of wolf?

Not knowing how to properly describe the creatures lying dead around the campground where the strange humanoid creatures had been living, Scaly could only tilt her head with a slight frown on her face.

Ah! I can use the inspection on dead monsters!

Suddenly remembering that she could also inspect dead monsters as she was trying to figure out what the dead monsters in front of her might be, Scaly wasted no time in inspecting the dead monsters in front of her.

[Forest Gnoll, Warrior, lvl 19 (dead)]

[Description: Forest Gnolls, a type of gnoll living in the forest.

Different from normal gnolls that are known to be feral and are feared for attacking without warning, slaughtering their victims, and devouring their flesh, the forest gnolls stand out from the rest of the hyena-headed humanoids in their race by gathering together in tribes similar to goblins instead of packs like the rest of their race.

Most known for being the more peaceful kind of monster that can engage in trade with humans and other races outside a dungeon. Of course, this doesn't lower the danger of these monsters standing more than two meters tall, as they are still ferocious monster than can kill at a moment's notice.

Trade with them is only recommend outside a dungeon and with sufficient strength to defend yourself against them.]

Gnoll? Peaceful monster? Trading with humans?

Reading through the rather long description, Scaly could not help tilting her head as she looked down at the dead gnolls not too far away her.

No matter how hard she tried, she could not imagine these monsters had the ability to communicate and trade with humans. Especially considering their ferrous looking appearances and ragged armor and chipped weapons.

Then again, they did have the ability to build an encampment, something she had never seen another group of monsters do before, so maybe they really did have the ability to communicate and trade with humans.

Not that it mattered much to her, as they were already dead and would at most serve as a possible target for her if she ended up encountering them given their strength being around the level she was looking for when it came to targets…
