My unbelievable life with CATS (Con and Thief system)

Chapter 82: Emotional attack

After that, they began cleaning up the bunker according to their preferences. Dylan and Clara were busy using their hacking skills to change everyone's personal data. Ellie, Maya, Lena, and Amy all adopted the last name Morgan and were registered as Dylan's wives in the country's civil registry database—a record that would be impossible to check unless someone was specifically looking for it.

Then Dylan printed new IDs for the four of them. He also changed Clara's last name to Morgan but, for the time being, Clara was listed as a sister until she and Aaron were old enough to legally marry. Meanwhile, Clara handled their school situations. She registered Fiona and Iris as transfer students at the new, targeted school by pulling their student data and transcripts from the old school.

She did the same for herself and Aaron, moving their old school data to the new school. Clara printed all the data and four forms to be submitted to the school administration shortly, so by the new school year, they would all enter as transfer students.

"It's all done, Big Brother. We just need to go to the school and hand over the data," Clara said, turning to look at Dylan.

"Okay, tomorrow we'll go to the school. The location isn't far from this house, is it?" Dylan asked.

"No, just like Big Sister Amy said, the location is close to the house. We can get there on foot. The middle school and elementary school are next to each other because they are from the same foundation, so... it's pretty simple. We can walk home with Fiona and Iris every day," Clara answered.

"Good... so that's settled then. Now I'll find another job in this city," Dylan said, stretching.

"Wait... you want to work again, Big Brother?" Clara asked, confused.

"Yep. Even though we can rely on KATS for money, we need status, right? At the very least, the neighbors need to see us going out and coming home from work," Dylan answered.

"That's true. So, what kind of job are you looking for?" Clara asked.

"Construction again. I've already made a resume for it, and besides, I have enough experience to understand the business. We can worry about certifications later," Dylan answered.

"Hmm... okay. I'll go help Aaron and the others so we can finish up faster," Clara replied, standing up.

After Clara left to help Aaron, who was in the bathroom, Dylan stood up and walked into the door leading to the bedrooms. He opened the doors one by one and found Fiona and Iris happily playing in their room using their tablets. Both seemed to be watching a movie and chatting. Dylan closed the door again. "Click," the hallway door opened. Dylan turned to see Maya step in, holding her smartphone. Her face looked troubled and sad.

"What's wrong?" Dylan asked.

"Oh, there you are, babe... I... I'm going to my room first," Maya said.

"Are you okay? You look pale... is something wrong?" Dylan asked.

Maya was silent. She stared at Dylan, who looked anxious watching her stand in front of him, then she showed her smartphone screen to Dylan. An email was displayed on Maya's smartphone screen. The sender was the hospital, notifying her that Maya's mother had woken up and was currently on her way, being transferred to a hospital in their current city.

"Wait, are you your mom's emergency contact?" Dylan asked.

"That's the thing, babe. Like I told you, I ran away from home. I lost contact with everyone except Mike. I only found out Mom was hospitalized from Mike back then, and you were with me when we met Mike. Plus, this email is my new email, made after I ran away. No one should know it, not even Mike. I never told anyone this email address," Maya answered.

"I see," Dylan muttered. "KATS, can you look into this? It looks like CROWS might be up to something again," Dylan said in his head.

[Understood, sir.]

Dylan observed Maya's sad expression in front of him, then he placed his hands on both of Maya's shoulders until Maya flinched slightly and looked up at Dylan's face.

"Do you want to see your mom?" Dylan asked.

"Um... no. Mom is just like Mike; she defends Karl too. But still, hearing that she woke up from a coma in the hospital, as her daughter, I'm just sad that I can't see her. That's all," Maya answered.

"I understand. If you really want to visit your mom, I can take you, but we have to confirm first whether your mom is truly awake or if this is just a trick by the enemy," Dylan replied.

"Yes, I understand. Sorry, babe, I'm just causing trouble," Maya replied.

"You're not causing trouble, and this is completely normal," Dylan replied. "If this really is CROWS's doing, it means he's now attacking our emotional weak spots. We need to be careful about being manipulated from now on," Dylan murmured in his head.

[That is correct, sir. CROWS has capabilities for that.]

After that, Dylan walked with Maya into her room. He continued to stay with Maya, who seemed sad and clearly needed his attention. A short while later, "Knock... knock," there was a knock on Maya's door. Dylan stood up and opened the door. He saw Aaron with his arm around Clara, who was crying at the doorway.

"Big Brother... we have bad news. Aunt Melissa was in a car accident while driving and is now in the hospital. Can we please go visit her? The hospital is in this city," Aaron said.

"Yes, Big Brother, I just got a notification by email," Clara added, showing him her smartphone screen.

Dylan took Clara's smartphone. He read the email and checked the sender, then turned and approached Maya. He took Maya's smartphone, then looked at the sender's address on Maya's phone. It turned out the sender was the hospital, using the exact same generic email, though the hospital names were different.

He opened his hacking screen and typed something on the holographic keyboard. Not long after, he immediately found the sender's IP address. It turned out both were sent from the same IP address. Dylan immediately turned to look at Aaron and Clara.

"Both of you, come inside and close the door," Dylan said.

Aaron brought Clara inside, then closed the door. Dylan immediately explained to Clara and Maya that the email was clearly a trap because it used a generic email and was sent from the same IP address. Dylan then showed his holographic screen to Maya and Clara. Both gasped, seeing that what Dylan said was true.

"So Mom wasn't actually in an accident?" Clara asked.

"Most likely not," Dylan answered.

"And my mom might not even be awake from her coma," Maya added.

"That's right, nothing is certain. It looks like someone wants to lure us out. For now, I'm asking you to be strong. Just believe that Aunt Melissa and Maya's mom are okay," Dylan replied.

Suddenly, "Blak," the door opened. Ellie immediately walked into Maya's room, showing her smartphone to Dylan. Just like Clara and Maya, Ellie also received an email reporting that her father had died in the hospital after being stabbed by someone while drunk at a bar and asked Ellie to come verify the body. The hospital address was the same as the hospital address in Clara's and Maya's emails.

"I only came here to tell you that even if he is dead, I won't go to his funeral, let alone verify the body," Ellie said.

"Hmm... okay. Please don't do anything rash. Someone is trying to mess with us. Look at this," Dylan showed his holographic screen to Ellie.

Ellie read the holographic screen, then looked at her smartphone screen and back at the hologram, then she turned to look at Dylan.

"So it's all a lie?" Ellie asked.

"Yep... something like that. It's highly likely this is CROWS's doing, exploiting our emotional weaknesses," Dylan answered.

A short while later, Lena and Amy also entered Maya's room. Amy didn't show her smartphone because she hadn't received an email, but Lena showed hers. The content of her email was much worse than the others: for a police investigation, they would exhume Lena's grandmother's grave and take the body to the same hospital listed in Ellie, Maya, and Clara's emails for an autopsy.

"Haha... funny. Something impossible like this won't fool me. I'm just showing it to you because it's ridiculous," Lena said casually.

"Yeah, true, that email is just ridiculous and insane," Amy replied.

Dylan thought hard, trying to figure out what their enemy wanted by attacking their emotional state. Suddenly, "Bwuuung," a holographic screen appeared, displaying an image of a hospital that looked abandoned and non-operational. The address was the same as the hospital listed in the emails, and next to the image was a picture of a smartphone similar to their new ones.

[The one who sent the emails is not CROWS, but something else, and they are located at that hospital.]

"Hmm... I see. So our enemy is at that hospital," Dylan muttered.

[Hmm... not necessarily an enemy, sir.]

"Huh... what do you mean?" Dylan asked, confused.
