My unbelievable life with CATS (Con and Thief system)

Chapter 66: Farewell grandma

"Tap... tap... tap," Dylan, Lena, Ellie, Amy, and Maya rushed into the Emergency Room at the hospital to check on Lena's grandmother. They were all still wearing their graduation gowns. As they walked in, a nurse directed them to a curtained bay.

"Sshhh," the curtain was pulled open, revealing a nurse inside who was tidying up the side of the bed and medical equipment on a nearby table. Lena froze, seeing a figure lying on the bed, already completely covered with a blanket.

Lena and Maya immediately ran to one side of the bed, while Ellie and Amy went to the other. Dylan stood in the middle, staring at the blanket-covered body in front of him without saying a word. With trembling hands and slowly, Lena grabbed the blanket and pulled it down to the level of the head. She immediately covered her mouth with her hand, and tears streamed down her face.

"Grandma."

Lena immediately hugged Elenor, who was already lying stiff and still, looking peaceful in front of her, sobbing uncontrollably. Maya hugged Lena from behind, tears streaming down her face, as did Ellie and Amy, who were crying and holding Elenor's hand. Dylan bowed his head and remained silent, not saying anything. A sorrowful atmosphere immediately enveloped the small bay inside the emergency unit. The nurses left the bay, giving them space to mourn.

Dylan stared at Elenor's face, which was smiling and looked extremely peaceful in front of him. He never expected the grandmother he had spoken to just a few days ago at the lawyer's office to now be lying stiffly in front of him. "Click," his two hands clenched the bed railing in front of him until his knuckles turned white.

"She could not have just fallen down the stairs, could she CATS? We know what Grandma's capabilities were," Dylan muttered in his head.

[Yes, she was pushed by someone, master. Someone murdered her.]

"Huh... I think I know who pushed her," Dylan replied in his head.

[Lena's father pushed her, master, because they had a dispute and an argument. The reason was the change in the grandmother's will that gave everything to Lena.]

"I figured. The timing is too coincidental. Grandma only just changed her will. That's totally outrageous," Dylan said.

[What do you want to do, master?]

"Frankly, the incident at the school today—the presence of Ellie's mother, Lena's parents, Maya's foster father, plus the man I saw on the cruise ship who has a connection to Amy at the graduation ceremony, and then Grandma's death coincidentally close to the will change—my gut tells me this is all connected to CROWS, so I want to address the source immediately," Dylan replied.

[Understood.]

"First, we'll give Grandma a respectful burial. After that, please tell me everything about CROWS, our enemy. I want to deal with them immediately, for the sake of Ellie, Lena, Maya, Amy, Aaron, Fiona, Iris, and my unborn children. I don't want my family involved with them," Dylan answered.

[Affirmative. Your grandfather also said the same thing when his family was threatened.]

"Yeah... that figures. My grandfather loved a good joke, but when it came to family... he was number one," Dylan replied.

Shortly after, a doctor and a nurse entered. They immediately spoke with Dylan and the others. The doctor said that Elenor had died on the way when the ambulance was bringing her to the hospital. Elenor died because her head hit the floor when she slipped and fell down the stairs, as the impact wound on her head was clearly caused by a hard collision with the floor.

To the doctor and nurse, this reason made sense, as Elenor, being an older woman, could have easily slipped and it was categorized as an accident. Dylan simply nodded as he listened to the doctor's explanation. After that, the doctor began explaining the burial process. Lena, who no longer had any immediate family, finally decided to bury her grandmother right next to her grandfather's grave.

The doctor then left the bay, and the nurse invited Lena to step out to the administration office to discuss Elenor's funeral arrangements. But as Lena was about to move, Dylan blocked her, then held both of Lena's shoulders.

"You stay here. I'll take care of it. Please send me your grandfather's burial location via message. You keep Grandma company here, okay?" Dylan said, smiling.

"Y-yes, thank you, babe," Lena replied, bowing her head.

Dylan turned to look at Elenor lying on the bed and smiled, "Goodbye, Grandma." Then he immediately stepped out with the nurse after giving instructions to Maya, Amy, and Ellie to look after Lena.

"CATS, make the entire bay disappear to protect them and activate your shield," Dylan said in his head.

[Understood, master.]

The bay behind Dylan immediately vanished as if it used his own Vanish skill. Faintly visible was a translucent hologram dome protecting the entire Emergency Room area. Meanwhile, inside the bay, Lena sat back down next to Elenor, who was lying on the bed, and held her hand. Ellie, Maya, and Amy stood around the bed. They thought back to the incident at the school and immediately shivered, then looked at each other.

"It's a good thing Dylan was there," Maya said.

"Yes, definitely. If he hadn't been, we probably wouldn't be here," Ellie added.

"Dylan... he's Phantom Cat, huh... I suspected it... but knowing it... it just feels surreal that Dylan is Phantom Cat," Lena said, wiping away her tears.

"How come you're not surprised, Amy?" Maya asked.

"Um... I... I already suspected it too," Amy answered haltingly.

"Hmm... you knew beforehand, didn't you... confess," Ellie replied.

Seeing her three friends staring at her intently, Amy couldn't answer, but she nodded as her reply. Maya, Ellie, and Lena sighed, then the four of them fell silent again, and the atmosphere in the bay was quiet, with only the faint sound of an EKG machine from a neighboring cubicle audible. Suddenly, Maya broke the silence.

"Girls, can I ask something of you?" Maya asked.

"What is it?" Ellie asked.

"You saw it for yourselves, right? My brother Mike and his fiancée were with my stepfather. That means he's on my stepfather's side. I've told you about my grandfather's inheritance before, right? And since we've graduated now, could I ask to be Dylan's legal wife to cash out my grandfather's inheritance?" Maya answered.

"Huh?" Ellie, Lena, and Amy said simultaneously.

"Don't be so surprised. This is so my stepfather can't cause any more trouble. It's clear I can't even trust my brother. The only way is for me to marry Dylan before my brother marries. And with my pregnancy, it's clear I'll win over my sister in terms of having a family," Maya said.

"But didn't your grandfather split the assets equally between the two of you?" Ellie asked.

"He did, but the condition is that my brother and I have to have a family first before it can be disbursed, that's the problem," Maya answered.

"Hmm... don't you want to talk to Mr. Robert, your grandfather's lawyer, first?" Lena asked.

"Yes, I plan to talk to him about it first, but before that, I need your permission because the four of us are all Dylan's wives," Maya replied.

"I don't have a problem with it," Amy interjected.

Ellie and Lena immediately turned to look at Amy, who seemed relaxed and was holding Maya's hand next to her.

"Alright, I understand. But once you become the legal wife, don't forget the rest of us, okay?" Ellie said.

"Never. All of you are official; I'll just be the one written down—that's the only difference," Maya replied.

"Okay, I don't have a problem with it either, then," Lena added, standing up and going over to Maya.

Finally, the four of them hugged together, unaware that a single tear escaped from Elenor's closed eye.
