The door opened, and Raze walked in after the teacher, his hands dipped in his pockets and a carefree attitude, but he was scanning each person in the room carefully with God's Eye, and he found nothing weird about them.
The woman was a young woman, probably in her late twenties, dressed in mage robes with glasses on her face. Her hair was neatly tied, and her hands were placed neatly on her lap.
Raze could tell from a glance that she was a neat freak. Her tea was in a cup placed on a coaster, unlike the man beside her who had his cup on the table, with some spills on the side. He was a man far past his prime, though not exactly old.
"Hello, Raze. Didn't think I'd see you back this quick," Rose greeted, a soft smile on her face as she spoke.
Ella stood at the back, bowed to her master, and didn't say anything more. The man and woman seated in the room turned their eyes to Raze, their brows raised.
"This is the kid that fixed something that had plagued the best of mages for hundreds of years?" the man asked.
"You sound pretty unbelieving," Lady Green said. She folded her arms and leaned back. "What Mister Cain told us is that he did it. Do you believe Cain would try to give away glory if he was the one?" she asked.
"No, no, nothing like that, Headmistress," the man said and then got up on his feet. He looked Raze right in the eye. "Kid, tell me, did you meet someone that showed this to you? Please tell me," the man asked.
"Uhm, no," Raze replied casually. "You don't need to be a genius to figure out what was wrong. Having two stabilizers for a structure that needed one was wrong, so remove the first stabilizer, replace it with something that would be a core, and then fix the last one to stabilize. It's that simple," he said casually.
"Sadly, it isn't that simple," the lady spoke. "My master, Grand Wizard Grimdore, studied runes all his life and he wasn't able to find the answer to this," she stated.
"Uhm, that's because you have never looked for answers," Raze said. His words dropped like a bombshell, and all eyes locked on him.
"What do you mean, Raze? Are you insulting the work of all rune smiths and mages throughout the years?" Lady Rose asked.
"Nope, that's not it," Raze replied. "What I'm trying to say is that you have a very common scenario in your hands where you all believe that by learning the whole subject, it allows you to answer the small questions.
You feel like learning about runes altogether, knowing all the runic symbols, this or that, would ultimately help you fix every rune-related issue.
But that's dumb, and the reason you haven't been able to do it. Because none of you wanted to come down from your high horses and actually take a good look at the talisman. You kept looking at it with a general eye, the eye of all knowledge of runes, but you didn't look at it on a one-to-one level.
And when you look at things from a broad view, or from above, you tend to miss a lot. If you had just studied the talisman properly, you would have gotten an answer many years ago," Raze explained. He tapped on his forehead when he was done.
"The brain works by finding the average, so all your solutions to issues follow the average line. Until you drift from that and focus on the specific, you can't fix everything."
What he said really made sense, and that fact shocked them. It was indeed something easy, but they had allowed it to fall into their blind spot.
Clap! Rose clapped her hands and pulled their attention.
"Regardless of what it was or was not, we'll be sending this up to the crown. He deserves a reward," she said.
"To the crown? Why not to the magic council?" the lady asked.
"Because I've worked with those old farts. They'll steal what he gave, give him a small shut-up fee, and take the glory of his development. No one outside this room can tell anyone what he discovered until I have spoken to the Queen and informed her.
She'll be the one to decide what happens," Rose said. Her eyes carried a heavy warning, she would take down whoever leaked the issue.
'The Queen? She means Marine Vermillion? Oh hell no, I'm not ready to meet that lady. She terrified me just from reading the books alone. God knows what would happen if I met her,' Raze thought.
"Uhm, can you ensure I get monetary payment? I don't care what is done with the information. Just give me money and ensure that's all. No public anything. I don't want to be in the public eye or the eye of the royal family at all," he said.
"Hmmm, I'll try my best to let her know when I inform her," Rose said.
[....]
Inside a lavish and massive bedroom, a woman sat close to her makeup table with a huge mirror. Her crimson red hair flowed down her body like flames. Her pale face and red eyes made her beauty stand out, and her gaze was as sharp as a knife.
She was dressed in a simple dress and a royal robe for cover. She had just come from a meeting with the Dukes, and a letter came in from her friend and master from many years ago, Rose Green.
She read the contents, and a smile formed on her face. "He doesn't want to be known? Hmm, now I am intrigued by who this child is," she said.
"Sebastian," she called out, and instantly a man in a full butler suit appeared. He was tall, a bit old but handsome, with grey hair.
"Prepare a carriage for me. I'll be heading to Raven Academy for a bit," she said.
"My Queen, why not have one of the grand wizards of the court open a gate to the city?" he asked.
"Are you forgetting? Long-distance teleportation is a crime. We can't allow the people to believe mages are all-powerful, it will lead to fear and unrest," she stated.
"Sorry, my Queen, I shouldn't have suggested that," he bowed. "I'll prepare a wyvern carriage for you. We should be there in a day, tops," he said and then vanished again.
She looked up at the mirror. "When I am done, I'll handle the issue of the abominations that are spreading."
