Mecha Devourer System

Chapter 74: The Arena

The total number of newcomers Everlearn noticed during the classes was in the range of about a hundred.

In his mind, he had estimated the total newcomers to be around 110 or so.

Yet right now, before him was an arena in the shape of a football stadium, and as he looked around, there were more than 400 seated students!

And this arena was for Newcomers only.

'No wonder I was ranked 205,' he mused to himself.

When he had seen his challenge rank was 205, it had sounded dumb since there were just about a hundred or so students.

How was he number 200?

But now he understood.

Perhaps the newcomers were all divided into different classes, and Everlearn himself was just part of one class of Newcomer students.

There were most likely more classes with other Newcomers.

The arena was loud, very loud, and there weren't only students but even instructors too.

Around eight were currently seated in a different area of the arena.

As he stepped into a seating area, he was in time to watch a fight currently ongoing between two students, both Corers, but with quite a big strength difference, as one of them was being beaten black and blue by his opponent.

Soon enough, an instructor raised his hands, dividing the stadium in two with a white projected light.

One of the lights soon became green for the side of the dominating student, while the one with the beaten-up student turned red.

Another loud uproar rang out from the students watching.

'It's just a fight, why are they so loud?' Everlearn mused to himself, and his eyes lit up when he noticed some students gathered around in a circle.

║They bet on fights.║

The system panel flashed to Everlearn, who mused a silent 'O'.

The second the fight was over, another fight was quickly called out, and it continued, some taking less than five minutes to end and some taking close to an hour before the winner was finally determined.

What was constant was that there was always a winner.

Even when the students were equal in power and suffered the same wounds, the instructor ended up picking a winner, never a draw.

"Interesting," he mused.

"Hey, hey, hey!"

The call came from behind as Everlearn watched a student running across the seats before coming to take a seat by his side.

"You come to bet a fight, or fight?"

The figure was a chubby-looking young man with brown hair, donning an all-black jacket, shirt, and jeans.

"Fight?" Everlearn replied.

"Oh shit? For real?"

The guy asked, looking at Everlearn from up and down.

The boy before him, with his hoodie and trousers, looked like a mysterious underdog fighter, but his eyes and face?

They looked too innocent, making him seem more of a beauty princess than a fighter.

"Who you up against?" He asked suspiciously.

"Who the fuck is asking?" Everlearn replied.

"My bad, my bad.

"I'm Joey. I work for Betloselose. Those guys over there," he said, pointing to the circle of students gathered together in the betting.

"Is that even allowed?" Everlearn asked suspiciously.

"Well, it isn't against any law, and even the instructors are fine with it.

"What I do is collect stats from fighters and return it to the group to make a bet, so I wanna know who you are and who you're up against?"

"Sounds like a waste of my time," Everlearn replied, shooing the boy off.

"Hey, if more people bet on you, you take 10% of the total bet, on god."

"And if you win, you take 30% of the bets against you.

"That's at least 50 points minimum... if you win, of course," Joey said, as Everlearn hummed before he replied.

"I'm Everlearn, fighting some dude called Vulcan, 20 minutes from now," Everlearn replied, and he watched the boy quickly browsing his device.

"Oh, you're... wait... You're the 205 dude fighting Valcan!?" Joey said out loud in shock, as Everlearn raised an eyebrow.

"Dude, your fight is already popular since Vulcan has been wiping the arena ground with asses all week."

"You sure you wanna go against that psycho?" Joey said, as Everlearn shrugged.

"Can't back off now."

"Have you watched any of his fights?" Joey asked, and Everlearn shook his head.

"Nah, you ain't winning that fight, dude," Joey said, about to leave when he paused, turning back and asking,

"Hey, you wanna bet though?"

"Everyone's betting against you right now, so if you bet something and win, you might win big..." he said, and when Everlearn thought about it for a moment.

"Yeah. Imma bet 50 points, but can't get any points out due to the competition now..." he said, and Joey nodded.

"It's fine."

"Imma just do a quick scan for a 50 points bet."

"If you win, you're getting at least 200 points in the bet."

"If you lose, the 50 points are automatically removed after the fight, and there are no refunds."

"You sure you want in?" he asked, and Everlearn nodded.

"I do."

Joey brought his device closer to that of Everlearn, and he soon got the notification for a 50-point transfer.

He accepted it, and Joey's device made a beep.

"I got it. Good luck out there, man."

'And hey, just shout surrender once you're done. The instructor will step in," he advised before Everlearn watched him quickly scurry off back to his group.

He got a few glances from the group who looked in Everlearn's direction in the same surprise before snickering, quickly exchanging points.

[They really are betting against you.]

The system panel flickered as Everlearn shrugged.

'Rank 205 against Rank 15. Who wouldn't?"

"Better for me, though," he mused.

Quickly enough, 20 minutes passed, and it was time.

"Next Challenge!" The instructor's voice carried through the entire arena.

"Ranked 15 with 7 consecutive wins by explosive knockouts and zero losses!"

Before the name could even be called out, the arena was already bustling with the call.

"Valcan! Valcan! Valcan!"

"VALCAN THEROPITICA!"

The gates beneath opened up, and soon enough, a figure walked in, and Everlearn raised an eyebrow.

"Interesting," he mused, a grin curving up on his lips.

Now this was a fight that could be worth it.
