Mecha Devourer System

Chapter 44: The Height Of Skill

VROOOOOOM!

The air flapped violently as Everlearn's head jerked downward.

RIIIIPPP!

The air an inch away from the tip of his nose was sliced cleanly through as the dagger flashed past his face.

Everlearn's eyes widened when he caught his own reflection on the blade.

The moment it weaved past him, he exerted strength in his feet, sending him back as he flipped twice, crossing a five-meter distance and appearing at the far end of the hall.

In a second, he was out of the fight's range.

"No way I'm participating in this," Everlearn said, watching as students were sent flying into the air again and again, roughly blown through walls and ceiling.

But he was forced out of his passiveness when the system panel blinked before him.

║NEW MISSION ACTIVATED!║

║Mission: Slice the beaded chain on the Weapon Instructor's neck!║

"Huh?"

Turning toward the weapon instructor's neck, he truly found a beaded chain hanging around the man's neck.

"No way I'm..., "

║Rewards:

+3 Level Up Cards!

+5,000 EXP!║

The panel blinked again, and Everlearn froze.

He opened his mouth to protest, shut it, opened it again, then sighed, before his expression turned dignified.

'On second thought, I suppose it's actually beneficial to participate in class challenges as well, don't you think?'

║Of really, you coward!║

The system shot back, and Everlearn rolled his eyes, but the truth was, he was already fired up.

Now that there was something to gain, apart from a senseless beating, he found it more reasonable to participate.

Gripping his spear, Everlearn didn't rush in directly.

Instead, he darted in a circle amongst the other students who were being thrown here and there.

The instructor's dagger slashed toward him, and Everlearn leapt up, landing momentarily on its flat side.

In that instant,

BOOM!

The air erupted as Everlearn burst forward with explosive momentum, pushing against the dagger.

STEP!

STEP!

STEP!

Three steps, and he was just a meter away.

His body coiled like a spring mid-air, his spear jerked back, and in the next moment,

PIERCE!

The spear pierced toward the instructor's neck, but,

BANG!

Something slammed into Everlearn's side, making his spear's edge miss by just five centimeters.

BAAAAAANG!

He was whisked away, slamming into the wall before he fell off it, face flat.

"The chains... he can attack with the chain too," Everlearn muttered, peeling his face off the dojo ground.

CLAAANG!

CLAAANG!

The sound of metal clashing snapped him as he turned back to the instructor.

He froze on the scene:

A student was actually exchanging moves with the instructor!

It was a pink-haired female, using a katana.

"So fast!?" Everlearn gasped.

The girl was so fast that Everlearn couldn't even see her feet, and he watched wide-eyed as she blurred between spots.

One moment, she was on the ceiling, the next bouncing off the walls, striking with deadly precision, attacking the instructor ceaselessly.

What was more, she wasn't alone.

A blue-haired young man wielding twin long swords, each with curved blades, was also clashing with the instructor.

He dodged most of the man's attacks, though barely, and the number only increased as time passed.

'Going toe-to-toe with an Instructor. How are they even doing that?'

║That's because the Instructor is only exerting an equal level of power as you guys.║

The panel informed.

"Equal power?" Everlearn mused in disbelief.

║Yes.║

║The only reason he's sending you all flying is because of the proficiency of his weapon skill.║

║Watch closely. This is what even your little power can achieve with a good enough skill.║

Everlearn sat up slowly and silently watched, and the more he watched, the more stunned he was.

Every one of the man's strikes could send students flying, yet he could feel it; his power wasn't greater than theirs.

The key was in how he used it.

The precision of every chain swing.

The accuracy of every strike.

It was perfect, like a carefully rehearsed performance.

And yet his strikes remained absolutely unpredictable.

"This… this is skill?" Everlearn whispered in awe.

Never in his entire existence had he come across something like that before.

║This is the Height of Skill, ║ the system confirmed, and he could only remain silent.

He had the same amount of power the instructor held, yet he knew he could never take on three students at once.

Meanwhile, the instructor was keeping hundreds of them at bay without ever even moving a single step away from his spot.

"Is it really just level-ups and stat points I need?" he murmured. "Or learning to master even the little strength I already have?"

He tightened his grip on the spear and rose to his feet.

Spinning the weapon in his hands, Everlearn crouched low, then moved!

CLANG!

The chain shot toward his feet, but he leapt up at the last second, dodging the strike.

All of a sudden, it froze mid-motion before suddenly whipping up in between Everlearn's opened legs.

But as if anticipating it, Everlearn twisted his body sideways, swerving past it by a hair's breadth.

The force ripped his clothes to pieces, yet the moment he landed—

BOOM!

The ground trembled as he flashed forward again, appearing right beneath the instructor, whose glowing white eyes flickered with surprise.

RIIIIIP!

A whoosh of air exploded as Everlearn's spear thrust toward the man's neck, and for the first time,

BOOOOM!

The entire dojo quaked.

The instructor took a single step backward, head jerking behind as the spear's edge flew above his face.

Then, something came flying back at Everlearn.

The dagger.

He immediately drew back his spear horizontally over his head,

BANG!

Dagger and spear collided, and one of Everlearn's knees gave way as he was slammed into the dojo ground, his teeth clenching hard in resistance.

'So...so heavy!'

SHRIIIIING!

A sharp metallic ring filled the air as the katana-wielding girl reappeared, slashing toward the instructor's face.

The instructor twisted his wrist, and his chain snapped out, colliding with the katana's edge.

The girl was thrown backward as the chain smacked her weapon with brutal force.

But her action saved Everlearn.

To block the girl's strike, the instructor had to divert some of the strength he was using to crush Everlearn with the dagger.

Everlearn seized that moment, quickly swerving aside as the dagger grazed along the edge of his spear.

In the next instant, he spun the spear across his body and, with a burst of speed, slashed forward once more, aiming straight for the instructor's neck.

SLASSSH!

The instructor jerked his head aside, and the spear missed his neck by an inch, but its tip nicked the small rope holding the beaded chain.

DROOOOP!

DROOOOP!

DROOOOP!
