As I walked outside, I caught a glimpse of the neatly cut grass that shaped out a muddy road, connecting the individual houses with each other, and in turn, connecting them with the main road that led outside.
There were even a few yellow and red flowers growing at the edge of the road, giving it a picturesque appearance, calming the eyes and forming a pleasant smile on the face of the observer.
I think they were red and yellow dahlias. Not really useful for me, but they are a substantial source of potions for potion makers. I recalled following Tierra and Lierra, until we reached our destination, the Elder's house.
Tierra paused for a brief moment before raising her hand in my direction, giving me the bunch of keys to the elder's house. And taking them, I began moving towards the house, with Lierra behind me.
Even though Tierra wanted to see what was inside there, she didn't have the guts to get into a house where the devil once resided, at least not until it had been deemed safe by someone capable.
Well…
I wanted to say a couple of words regarding how it shouldn't be all that difficult, but deciding not to jinx myself, I shut my thoughts before focusing on the wooden door in front of me.
Entering the house, I saw the same scene as before, and began to check all the places that I could check.
The cabinets. The almirahs. The living room. The kitchen. The bedroom. I did not leave even a single thing behind. Everything that I could check, I checked.
Hmmm. Impressively enough, there was not a single useful thing that I could use.
Let's backtrack. What would a devil use? And how will they hide things? Hmmm… From what I remember, a devil likes to hide things in plain sight. So what could be the most obvious thing that I would miss? I contemplated before returning to the main hall, where I entered the house.
And then, looking at all the things that I would avoid looking at, I focused on the place that I ignored the most.
The carpet on the floor where I entered from.
Taking out a knife from my inventory, I then began tearing it out, wondering if I could find something in it.
Bingo!
And then as I tore it apart, came in front of me a weirdly shaped mana circle. It was of a deep red colour with words branching out of the circle at 4 irregular points of it. Compared to the easy, symmetrical normal mana circles, this one was as out of symmetry as possible. One look at it and it will make your head spin.
"What is this?" Leirra asked with slight curiosity.
"Demonic Language. It's a magic circle made of demonic language," I answered as I heard her gasp.
"It's a summoning circle. Just not for any demons," I added before using my knife to prick the edge of my fingers, enough to form a drop of blood on it.
-Drop!
As the blood drop touched the circle, it began shining brightly for a few seconds before its glow vanished, replacing a bunch of items present in front of us. About a dozen things including coins, weapons, scrolls and a diary and notes written on wrinkled old papers, that seemed to have seen the edge of time.
A total of 7 gold, 800 silver and 250 bronze coins. A fire scroll, a darkness scroll and two binding ones. As for the weapons, it's just a pair of rare-grade knuckles with about a dozen bunches of common and uncommon swords and daggers. A few common bows as well.
While the coins were universal, the others were of little use to me. I will probably sell what could be sold, leaving the others with the people in this settlement.
Since I have a 100 percent affinity with the people here, I guess it would benefit me if this settlement slowly evolves. I thought before keeping everything with me for the time being.
I then picked up the files on the floor before sparing a few moments reading them.
Well. I hope I find something in this. I thought as I looked through the files that they were written in a mix of demonic and human language.
About 10 minutes passed in silence as I read through the entire file, before putting it down with a slight sigh.
"Is everything all right?" Lierra asked with a concerned expression before I shook my head and answered.
"No, it's just that there was nothing much to gain from these. Everything it mentions was something that I had already guessed, or had an idea about."
Looking at her expression, it seemed she was waiting for me to explain it, to which I continued,
"It mentions the connection of the Demon Continent with the Mortal one, allowing the demons to cross over, at least weaker ones, to this land through this. From what I could make out of it, it didn't seem like a surefire plan at all. He was doing a trial of sorts and was probably going to keep on doing it for a long while until he gained success."
I pondered for a few seconds as I observed her baffled expression before I continued,
"One last thing that these texts mentioned was about the sacrifice of the dead. I think it meant the undead zombies that you had control of. Perhaps he wanted to use that to his advantage. Like gaining your power or something? This was mentioned separately from the other text, so probably not an initial plan. Something that he made after you got into your situation?"
Watching me explain, Lierra was dumbfounded for a few seconds before I chuckled and then looked at the diary of that demon guy, reading the first page.
XX/YYYY/ZZ
Today, I found the traces of an Ancient Temple. From the mana it gave off, it seemed to be coming from a dead God's Temple.
