The Hero’s Harem is Trying to Kill Him

Chapter 103: Shattered Crown

Scene 1 – The Fractured Banquet Hall

The banquet hall was no longer a place of feasting.

Marble columns had collapsed into heaps of stone. Flames licked the walls where torn tapestries burned. The once-gleaming chandeliers hung in jagged shards, glittering like broken stars across the blackened floor. What was once the center of Sovereign power had become a battlefield.

Kai stood in the middle of it all, his body trembling from wounds and exhaustion. Around him, his harem fought like storms barely contained.

Velis darted through the firelight, her twin blades flashing arcs of steel, each strike precise enough to carve down the beasts of shadow that poured from Sovereign gates.

Astra moved like a dancer, her voice weaving enchantments into the chaos. Every whispered word twisted enemy assassins into confusion—some turning on each other, some falling to their knees in worship before being cut down.

Lyra was fury itself, hurling lightning from her chains. Bolts struck the ceiling and split into wild branches, frying shadows where they stood, the air thick with the sharp burn of ozone.

And yet the Sovereigns pressed closer. Their dark banners surged through the smoke, their champions striking in waves to test the strength of Kai's side.

Above the carnage, the Queen sat upon her black throne, untouched. She raised her glass of crimson wine and smiled as if she were at a performance.

"You see it, don't you, Kai?" her voice echoed across the ruined hall. "Your pretty companions will break. They fight for you now—but in the end, they will fight against you. All crowns end in betrayal."

Scene 2 – The Crown's Whisper

The cursed crown burned against his brow. Each heartbeat made it pulse tighter, each thought tangled with voices that weren't his.

They will betray you first.

Bind them. Own them. Rule them.

Kai staggered, gripping his sword so hard blood dripped from his palm where steel cut skin. His vision blurred with the hiss of whispers.

Velis noticed his falter and cut her way toward him, eyes flashing with worry. "Kai! Stay with us! Don't let her get into your head!"

But Astra, even while charming enemies, spared a glance that betrayed something more complicated. Her smirk wavered; her lips parted as if she wanted to ask him if he was still himself.

And Lyra, still hurling lightning, turned her head once. The fierce protector's eyes softened for just a second. She was afraid—not of the Sovereigns, but of him.

The crown hissed louder at their doubt. See? They already fear you. Claim them before they leave you.

Kai's knees nearly buckled. He slammed his sword into the ground to steady himself. "Shut. Up."

Scene 3 – The Mistress's Temptation

Across the hall, the Mistress leaned lazily against a broken pillar. Her gown shimmered in the firelight, shadow weaving around her curves like a second skin. Her eyes glowed with the delight of a predator watching prey struggle.

"How much longer?" she purred, her smile sharp. "How much longer before you admit what you are? That crown fits you too well. You were never meant to be their savior, Kai. You were meant to rule them."

Her voice slid into his bones, stirring the same hunger as the crown. His body betrayed him, leaning toward her words, craving the release of surrender.

Velis cut down another beast and screamed at her. "Shut your mouth, witch!"

But the Mistress only laughed, covering her lips with delicate fingers. "How adorable. The loyal knight, snarling at me while her king crumbles."

Scene 4 – The Shattering Choice

The battle raged around Kai, but inside him there was only silence and the unbearable weight of choice.

The crown pulsed against his skull like a living thing. Each beat synced with his heart, squeezing tighter, branding its whispers into his thoughts.

They'll never stay. They'll leave you once you're weak. Strike first. Claim them before they claim freedom.

He saw Velis through the smoke—her face streaked with blood and ash, but her eyes burning with that same loyalty she'd sworn since the day she bound herself to his side. She cut her way toward him, every swing of her blade declaring that she would fight until her last breath for him.

The whispers twisted her devotion. She serves you now, but loyalty is chains of her own. She will break them when you falter.

Astra spun like fire and shadow, enchanting enemies to their doom. She was danger incarnate, her beauty sharper than her magic. For a moment her smirk faltered when she looked at him—concern flickering like a crack in her mask.

The crown poisoned even that. She craves power, not you. One day, her smirk will be for another, and she'll strike when you least expect it.

Then Lyra. Lightning still licked from her chains as she raised her voice above the storm. "Kai! Hold on! We're with you!" She was fierce, unshaken, yet her eyes betrayed fear—not of the Sovereigns, but of losing him.

The crown hissed. She fears you already. One day, she'll kill you before you can kill her.

Kai's chest heaved, every breath like fire. The crown wanted him to believe them all traitors. But as he looked again, past the whispers, he saw something else—Velis's hands shaking as she fought because she feared losing him, Astra biting back her own terror for his sake, Lyra breaking herself open to protect him.

They weren't betraying him. They were fighting for him. Always for him.

His fingers tightened on his sword. He raised it slowly, the crown burning brighter with every inch. His shout ripped through the hall:

"I CHOOSE—MYSELF!"

The blade came down.

Steel met cursed metal. Sparks flared like falling stars, and the sound of the strike split the air like thunder.

Scene 5 – The Scream

The crown did not simply crack.

It screamed.

The noise was a raw, piercing shriek, not of steel but of souls tearing apart. It was as if every voice that had ever worn it was being ripped from the chain at once. The sound clawed into the skulls of everyone in the hall—warriors dropped their weapons, shadows writhed in agony, and even fire seemed to recoil.

Kai's body buckled under the force. The sword vibrated in his hand until it nearly snapped. His knees hit the stone floor hard, cracks spiderwebbing beneath him. Smoke curled from the jagged fracture splitting across the crown.

Velis skidded to her knees beside him. "Kai! Don't move! Stay with me!" Her hands hovered, desperate to tear the cursed thing off his head but terrified of what touching it might do.

Astra swore under her breath, the enchantments in her voice faltering as her eyes widened in something that looked dangerously close to fear. "That… wasn't supposed to happen."

Lyra raised her chains like a shield, standing over Kai as though she could strike down the scream itself. "Get back!" she roared at the shadows that faltered in confusion. "He's mine to protect!"

Above them, the Queen's wine glass burst in her grip, crimson spilling across her throne. Her perfect smile shattered with it. For the first time, her composure cracked. "No… no, you fool… you don't know what you've unleashed."

The Mistress, by contrast, only leaned forward, her lips curling into a slow, hungry smile. "Oh, yes. Break it open. Show me what you really are."

The scream finally died, leaving only silence.

Then, from the fracture in the crown, darkness poured—not smoke, not shadow, but liquid night itself. It seeped across the floor, cold enough to frost stone, coiling like a beast uncoiling from sleep.

Kai's breath shuddered in his chest. His vision blurred with blood, fire, and fear. His harem pressed around him, their hands, voices, and strength trying to keep him tethered to himself.

But the voice that rose from the broken crown was no whisper this time. It was a single, terrible voice that rattled every bone in the room.

You cannot break me. You can only set me free.

The floor split open with the force of its laughter.

Scene 6 – The Awakening

From the fractured crown came a new voice—not whispers anymore, but one voice, deep and terrible.

You cannot break me. You can only set me free.

The floor split open. Darkness bled upward like liquid shadow, oozing, then rising, then shaping into something immense. The air grew cold. Candles extinguished in waves.

A shape towered above them, larger than any Sovereign beast, older than the palace itself. Its smile stretched too wide, rows of teeth glinting. Its eyes burned like suns smothered in ash.

The Queen stood for the first time, her hands clenched white on her throne. Her voice trembled.

"No… not here. Not now. The true Sovereign… has awakened."

The Mistress's lips curled into a dangerous smile, her body trembling with anticipation. "Finally," she whispered. "The real game begins."

Kai lifted his head, blood running down his face, the half-broken crown glowing like an open wound. His sword trembled in his hand. His harem closed ranks around him, but their fear was written in their eyes.

The shadow leaned low, its voice sliding into his skull like oil.

You broke the chains. Now wear me fully… or die.
