"Five treasures now. We're more than halfway there," Glakassa observed. "How should we distribute them?"
Sam shrugged. "I don't think it matters. If we don't have them by the time the floor ends, it won't matter. I should probably keep them in my storage device, though. Unless either of you has one?"
Glakassa nodded. "Yeah. I have one for storing volatile substances. It might be better for me to use that."
She collected the gemstones, and slid them into a pocket that seemed without end. The top of the pocket stretched to accommodate the gemstones, and reverted to normal once they were stored.
"What exactly do you have in there?" Sam asked. "I assume someone like you would have a top of the line storage device."
"It's where I keep those enchanted ice plates, and the ingredients that make them. The storage space is about as large as a decently sized warehouse. Maybe a million cubic meters?"
"So a hundred by a hundred by a hundred?" Sam asked. "That's a lot larger than mine."
"Where did you get your one?" Glakassa asked. "I wouldn't have thought that a newly initialized world would be able to find reputable storage devices at this point in their development."
"Yeah, I heard a bit about that. But I got mine from an out of universe E Ranker. Named Gordanus. I think I mentioned him before. A bit of a drunkard."
Glakassa did a double take. "Gordanus? Gordanus the Brewmaster?"
Sam frowned. "Never heard of him by that name."
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
Glakassa snapped her fingers. "Yes! I was wondering why that name tugged my memory when you briefly mentioned him before. When you said he was a drunkard just now, I remembered."
"Who is he?" Sam asked. "I thought he was just some random E Ranker who was assigned to me."
"No," Glakassa said seriously. "He's from my universe. Pretty famous too. He's a renowned alchemist. Able to brew some of the most powerful potions possible for an E Ranker to make."
Sam's entire opinion of the cultivator was changing. "I just thought he was some sort of wastrel. You're telling me he's famous?"
"More or less. He's still an E Ranker, but a very powerful one. Rumor has it that he's ready to break through to D Rank at any moment, but he's waiting for another insight into his Dao."
"I… did not get that impression from him. He didn't really do anything that would befit that sort of power."
Glakassa shrugged. "Who knows what he was doing? Perhaps he was limited by the System in some way. In any case, I'm beginning to think that there was some deeper meaning behind our meeting. That's a very large coincidence."
"Can we keep moving?" Jacob pleaded. "We're wasting time. You can talk on the way."
The rest of the floor passed by quickly enough. The only treasures available were the Volcanic Hearts, and the party quickly had nine of them. A few more of the other cultivators tried their luck by challenging them, but after Glakassa, the weakest there, beat back two at the same time, no more tried.
Yet again, Sam found himself wondering why this floor was so sparse with detail. There weren't even any monsters other than the Eruption Demons. It was like the System didn't want them getting anything useful, like it was about to challenge them to the utmost.
The floor ended without fanfare. A wave of light simply flashed across the world, scanning for the presence of the Volcanic Hearts. As all three of them had the requisite treasures, they passed. Only, when the sixty fifth floor vanished, they did not return to the Tower.
Space around them expanded, nebulas and galaxies sparkling in the darkness of the void. Tens of thousands of cultivators floated nearby, looking around in astonishment.
A starry figure stepped out of the cosmic ether, one that Sam recognized. It was an avatar of the System, a being more powerful than Sam could even understand.
