The Boundless Expanse(An Epic System Apocalypse LitRPG)

Chapter 656

Glakassa and Jacob blinked into existence next to Sam. "Another one of those Volcanic Hearts?" Glakassa asked. "I already scanned the first one, if you haven't already."

Sam shook his head. "I just read the description. Seems kind of useless. The description is very vague. What exactly is 'the prerequisite mastery'?"

"Good thing we don't need to use them," Jacob replied, shrugging. "Let's keep going. I have a feeling that there isn't really anything of value here beyond the floor title upgrade."

They found another one of the Volcanic Hearts an hour later. It was nestled in the center of a caldera. This one wasn't the property of an Eruption Demon, but now that Sam knew that the monsters carried a treasure of their own, he was more annoyed than relieved. Especially considering how easy they were to kill for him and his party.

Honestly, this entire floor felt lacking. It was as if the System had come up with it at the last moment. The first competition floor had been one with five layers, each with some thought put into them. This was like the System had copy and pasted a generic volcanic world into the Tower, and filled it with some monsters and subpar treasures. Most likely, it had something to do with the special event that it was planning.

What was that saying? Sam thought as he ran through the ashy landscape. God plans and man hopes? Something like that. Seems apt here.

"You seem deep in thought," Glakassa observed. "What's troubling you?"

The Overlord gave her a slight look, but then remembered his new persona, and simply kept running.

Sam looked over. "You got the message about the System commencing the competition floor early, right?"

Glakassa frowned. "Yes? I think everyone got that message…"

"Sometimes I'm not sure whether the System is singling me out or not. It's already sent me some personalized messages."

Glakassa raised an eyebrow. "Really? I'm sure you know how rare that is."

"Well, considering there aren't any factions watching us now, I guess I can explain a bit."

"It has something to do with your special floors, right?" Glakassa asked.

"Yeah. The normal ones weren't a challenge at all, so the System had to craft harder ones for me, ones in the real world."

"Same for me," the Overlord said, his Dao not letting Sam overshadow him.

"What's that?" Glakassa asked, looking over at the horizon. "There's something coming our way."

In the distance a plume of smoke and flame streaked across the atmosphere. At its center was what looked like a cultivator. The person was shrouded in a massive suit of flaming armor. The suit of armor held an ethereal sword of plasma and a thick shield made from the same substance. It was easily two or three hundred feet tall.

Sam narrowed his eyes and tried to make out the person piloting the giant fire elemental. Before he could learn anything useful, the cultivator sliced their sword across the sky. A beam of light peeled off the edge of the sword, gathering power as it ripped through the air. Made out caustic flame and plasma, it tore a hole in the sky. Circle after circle of rapidly expanding air heralded its arrival. Sam felt a good degree of danger from the attack. If it hit, it could even damage him.

He, Jacob and Glakassa split up, teleporting to the ground. Sam gathered his elemental energy and summoned a shield of yellow light before him. Earth was well suited conceptually to fight off a Fire elemental attack, and he intended to use it to weather the storm fully.

Jacob did the same thing with his elemental energy. A strange aura of power swept out from his shield. It was if he were telling the world itself that it would not break, and it would never falter as long as he drew breath. The edges of the shields overlapped, creating a zone of ultimate protection. Glakassa positioned herself there at the intersection of the yellow and red light. With a snap of her fingers, frost covered over the shields, interlocking fractals of ice girding the energy shield as a physical bulwark.

A moment later, the flame spear struck a few hundred feet before them. With a dull whining hum as the world shattered, the spear tore through the ground. It struck the shield next. The warriors were pushed back, but Sam and his father set their heels in a second later, contesting the technique with their own strength.
