The Boundless Expanse(An Epic System Apocalypse LitRPG)

Chapter 631

"You lost last time, and it looks like you accepted that you'll lose this time," Sam taunted. "Is that why you brought your friends?"

The Foreman, back in his customary suit of armor, flashed Sam a rude gesture. "You are a threat to the integrity of Stillgrave. My compatriots are here to ensure that you do not escape. Does a hunter bemoan his honor when he uses a trap to kill a rat? He does not, because the rat is so far beneath him."

Sam raised an eyebrow at that. "In your world, do rats frequently defeat the hunter? Is that why those traps are necessary?"

The Foreman fell silent, prompted by another hairline crack that Sam could feel spreading across his Dao. Instead, he simply attacked, followed by his allies. Twelve beams of pure elemental might sliced through the sky as the cultivators neared, all of them thrusting their weapons forth. Sam waited until the last moment, and then tugged himself upwards by the force of his own Dao. The energy beams slammed into the Shadow Raven, who had been trying to bite Sam for the last few seconds. Its flesh parted beneath the barrage, but unlike with Sam's earlier attack, the breadth of techniques and conceptual energies involved in the strikes prevented the monster from avoiding the brunt of the force.

Detonations of colorful light tore apart chunks of the elemental's shadowy flesh, but even as the Foreman and his allies attacked, Sam was already racing in, his hammer crackling with layered Dao energy, elemental energy and mana. The cabal of elemental cultivators turned to face him, summoning a variety of expressions of their elemental powers. Various hazes of the more insidious elements surrounded them, ranging from a cloud of stinging darkness to a miasma of poisonous gas.

Sam surrounded himself in the armor of his latest skill, and with the layers of mana, elemental energy and the Dao, was completely immune to the various energy fields. He sliced through the fog like a knife, Terra's Will at the ready. One of the cultivators, attuned to elemental light, met him, the woman's sword moving so fast that Sam could barely see it. Before his threshold upgrade, it would have sliced him open, but now, he had time to react. He condensed a fifth of his Dao energy pool down into his fist and created a shield of roiling power that could have stopped a nuclear strike. With a blistering swipe of his hand, he parried the sword, and slammed Terra's Will into the suddenly exposed woman's torso.

Blood explored out of her mouth as she shot backwards, impacting the poison cultivator as he remained locked in place, still channeling his mist. Both flew back, even as Sam engaged the other ten. He knew that he could not survive a direct fight against all of them at once, even with his latest growth. Instead, he would have to wear them down, and use the environment to his advantage. Speaking of that…

Sam flitted to the side as the Shadow Raven sliced a wing across the firmament, a blade of compressed Darkness stretching across the sky. It crossed the space in the blink of an eye, reality folding before it as the Shadow Raven made its rage known. A wave of spatial obduracy preceded it, locking those not fast enough to escape in place.

Sam barely avoided the edge of the wave, but many of the other cultivators were not as lucky. The blade sliced straight through them, damaging their internals without actually cutting through. It was a form of armor penetration that was more useful against lower level cultivators, as E Rankers could simply shrug it off. Indeed, an E Ranker could ignore most attacks.

Sam re-engaged a split second later, expanding Terra's Will. A comet's tail of city killing energies gathered around the weapon, and with a roar, he brought it down upon his foes. While the head of the hammer was about the size of a person, the corona of energy surrounding it was almost a hundred feet wide.

The Foreman, catalyst of all this war, scowled up at Sam beneath his helmet, and ascended on a pillar of lava, his own hammer blazing with volcanic might. Both weapons collided, but the difference between Sam's strength before and now was like night and day. Even then, he had something else to use. Dao Juggernaut filled Sam's body with raging might, and with a sudden explosion of power, he batted the Foreman out of the way, his hammer crushing the man beneath it. Dao Juggernaut scaled off of a cultivator's stats, meaning that with his recently crossed thresholds, the skill was far more powerful than ever before.
