Today I want to reflect a bit on the story. How we got here, where we are now and where the story is going from here. Spoilers for book 1&2 and some brain teasers for book 3!

Book 1 (past)

The world is a big mystery, a perfect snowy, winter morning with endless opportunity. Marcus sets out with little more than the desire to prove his own ideas right about the Fighter and to show his father that he can survive without him. He is a loner, and has been for some time. Marcus lacks human connection and he has little experience beyond what directly affects him. All this changes quickly when he gets to Helsinki and makes his first friends and meets Janette. Janette especially teaches him about life, friendship and the complications of love.

He grows as a class holder, overcomes many life threatening events and eventually sets out into the world. More friends, more connections follow and at this point Marcus is financially secure and has more than proven his Fighter is viable. This is where it could have ended, but instead Marcus makes new connections which draw him into ever larger events. Kim, the ginghi, Azaa, Marcus' original goals were slowly replaced by new ideas and loftier aspirations. He confronts his father and his trauma for the first time and founds his own clan. Marcus has changed, grown and is quickly rising in power. The future looks like sunshine and rainbows. Then the portal closes.

Book 2 (present)

Those four cursed years. The second book stands firmly under the influence of Marcus' lost years and the changes those years had brought to him and the world. Over the length of the book Marcus has to fight a deluge of problems and consequences of those lost years and his own growth in power and influence. Xeen, the Colors, the world, the Source, the USA, Azaa, new family, the Titan, the fourth ability, his disciple, it all crashes down on Marcus and it all comes at once. Marcus is drowning and desperately trying to keep his head above water. And even the help his friends give him comes with problems. Self determination, trust, duty, identity it is an endless struggle and he nearly breaks at several points in the story.

But he endures. He overcomes his obstacles and works through many problems while growing ever stronger. It is not easy and not all problems can be solved right here and now. He still has not managed to fully find his feet and steer his own path. The world is complex and powers far beyond his own are pushing and pulling on the young man. Still, as book two comes to a close much has calmed down or resolved and Marcus finally starts to settle into his new life and we end with him understanding his fourth ability. This final revelation is a symbol of him breaking through the chaos of the second book and moving forward.
