My College Teacher is My Children's Mom

Chapter 359: 359 Chapter: Little Head Big Curiosity

Lin Feng, experienced with tents, set theirs up swiftly and efficiently. He then took out three blankets from his backpack, which could be used as covers or padding.

From across the field, Mr. Li called out, "Parents who have finished setting up your tents, come here to collect the cotton quilts!"

"I'll go get them," Zhang Yuxi offered.

Lin Feng stopped her. "Let me. We'll need a lot of quilts for all of us; you won't be able to carry them."

Sure enough, he returned with six thin quilts that could be used as covers or laid underneath for extra comfort. Mr. Li reassured the parents they could use them without worry, as everything was clean and made of pure cotton.

"I brought long pajamas for the little ones, so we'll be fine," Lin Feng said.

Zhang Yuxi looked at him with admiration. "Honey, you're amazing. You think of every little detail."

Lin Feng leaned his face in, and Zhang Yuxi gave him a quick kiss. With that, their tent was all set. Liu Qing was still struggling with hers, so Lin Feng went over to lend a hand. While the adults worked, the children were, of course, playing.

Once everyone was more or less settled, Mr. Li spoke through a megaphone. "Alright, everyone, we're heading to the cafeteria for dinner! Afterward, we'll be handing out small pots. You'll have to figure out how to cook your own meals then."

The parents all understood this was just for fun, part of the experience of the trip. If they really had to cook for themselves from scratch, they would probably starve.

The site seemed to be an old factory of some sort. There were no workers around, but the cafeteria was open. By the time their class arrived, the parents and children from the other classes had already eaten, leaving the food trays looking rather picked over. The food itself was mediocre, not worth discussing whether it was good or bad. There was rice, porridge, and noodles, with a variety of meat and vegetarian dishes, including some suitable for the toddlers.

After eating, they returned the way they came.

"Parents can take their children for a nap now," Mr. Li announced through the megaphone. "We teachers will go collect the other supplies for you."

The children happily scrambled into their tents to play. A little later, Tian Tian came over. "Can I see your tent?"

The quads acted like proud little hosts, giving her a warm and enthusiastic welcome.

"Wow," Tian Tian exclaimed. "Your tent is so big!"

Zhang Yuxi smiled. "That's because there are so many of us! A small tent wouldn't have been big enough."

The quadruplets' large tent was certainly conspicuous, and their classmates came over one by one to have a look. Eventually, tired from all the playing, the children were called back to their own tents by their parents to go to sleep.

Lin Feng slept for half an hour before slipping out of the tent. Outside, Mr. Li and the other class teachers were distributing pots, bowls, and other kitchenware. Lin Feng went over to help. A small, dedicated kitchen area had been set up, with the plan for three families to share one cooking station. However, Lin Feng's family was as large as three families combined, so they were given their own separate set of kitchen and tableware.

After helping put everything in order, Lin Feng took a walk to explore the surroundings. That was when he discovered that the site had its own vegetable gardens, growing cucumbers, eggplants, tomatoes, and more. There were even fruit trees nearby!

Lin Feng felt a surge of joy. This trip is definitely worth it!

When he returned, he found that the other parents were all awake, though the children were still sleeping. Mr. Li was explaining that they would have to prepare their own dinner that evening.

"We will provide the meat, but you'll have to gather everything else yourselves," he said. "We have a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables here, and we hope you'll enjoy this activity with your children. There are several faucets over there for washing vegetables..."

By the time he finished his explanation, the children were beginning to wake up one after another. Lin Feng went to help his little ones out of their pajamas.

"Guess what? There are tons of vegetables and fruits here!"

This news not only woke up the children but also energized Zhang Yuxi. The quads couldn't wait to go see.

"Hang on, Daddy is still putting his socks on!" Lin Feng laughed. "We're going to cook our own dinner tonight... We can pick whatever we want, all fresh fruits and vegetables!"

Once the children were dressed, the family took the basket they had been given and went out to "shop" in the fields. Many other families were already there with their children, starting their harvest. This time of year, there was a wide variety of produce in season.

Lin Feng took the opportunity to teach his children about the different plants. "These are cucumbers! See? They grow on vines."

The little ones tilted their heads back, their eyes sparkling as they looked up at the cucumbers.

"Wow! So that's how cucumbers grow! It's magical!" Fourth exclaimed.

Second nodded seriously. "I thought they grew in the ground."

First laughed. "And I thought they grew on trees!"

Zhang Yuxi curiously asked Third, "And what about you? Where did you think cucumbers grew?"

Third blinked her big eyes. "I don't know!" She had clearly never given it much thought.

Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi lifted the children up one by one to pick a cucumber and place it in the basket, much to their delight. Next, Lin Feng led them to the eggplants. These were the long, slender variety with beautiful, tender-looking purple skin. The children squatted down in front of a plant, once again full of wonder. A single, short plant could bear five or six eggplants!

"Come on, let's pick some to take back," Lin Feng said.

The words had barely left his mouth before the children eagerly reached out.

"Be careful," he cautioned. "Don't damage the plants. They need to grow more eggplants later."

The stem of an eggplant has tiny thorns, and they pricked the children's fingers. Third was immediately on the verge of tears. "Mommy, it hurts..."

After Lin Feng showed them the proper way to twist and pull, it didn't hurt anymore. They added a few eggplants to their basket and moved on.

Next were the tomatoes. The homegrown tomatoes weren't like the perfectly uniform, bright red ones from the supermarket. Some were still green, while others were ripe and red. The children squatted down again, their little butts sticking out as they carefully picked the fruit.

"Don't take too many," Lin Feng reminded them. "Just pick as much as we can eat."

After picking the tomatoes, the kids happily ran ahead. They soon came upon a patch of small chili peppers. The plants were covered in a dense thicket of pretty little red peppers.

"Don't touch these," Lin Feng warned. "They'll make your hands sting."

Their small heads were filled with great curiosity, and the quads looked at him, puzzled.

Lin Feng explained, "These peppers aren't just spicy to eat; they can also make your skin burn if you touch them. If you accidentally rub your eyes after touching one, it will hurt a lot."

That made them understand. Lin Feng picked a few peppers for their basket, and they continued on their way.

Up ahead was a large trellis, and they could hear other parents and children shouting about winter melons. The family walked over and saw they were right. Some of the huge winter melons were hanging down from the vines, while others rested directly on top of the trellis structure. The children thought it was amazing. They had never expected winter melons to grow hanging in the air; they'd assumed they grew on the ground.

With his tall frame, Lin Feng could easily reach the melons. However, many parents were hesitant to pick them, partly because they were too high and partly because they were incredibly heavy and inconvenient to carry. Lin Feng felt the same. The winter melons were too heavy, and their basket was already getting full.

Walking on, they found rows of cowpeas. Lin Feng let the children pick some of the long, slender, and tender pods.

Finally, they made their way to the orchard. The most striking section was the vineyard, where a staff member was reminding all the parents to be very careful.

"These grapes are grown to be sold," the staffer explained. "They are quite delicate, so please be gentle when you pick them."

Because of this, the families only picked a few bunches, sharing them amongst themselves to have a taste. They were sweet and sour, with a decent flavor, but perhaps not sweet enough for the children's palates.

Beyond the grapes, there was also a watermelon patch, though only a few melons were visible here and there. Parents weren't allowed to pick them, so they just let their children have a look.
