Lin Feng also finished preparing dinner for Liu Qing and her daughter.
Liu Qing was a little embarrassed. "This is really too much trouble for you, having you watch our child and also cook for us."
Lin Feng smiled. "It's just a matter of adding another bowl and a pair of chopsticks."
Unable to resist the temptation of the delicious food, Liu Qing sat down with her daughter.
At the dinner table, Lin Feng took the initiative and offered for them to eat breakfast at his place as well.
It was kind of him to offer, but she felt she couldn't overstep her welcome. Liu Qing politely declined.
"Tian Tian drank a big bowl of porridge this morning," she explained. "She said she doesn't like breakfast from outside."
"When children are growing, it's most important for them to eat well and eat enough!" Lin Feng insisted.
For her daughter's sake, Liu Qing swallowed her pride and accepted.
The next day, Liu Qing and Tian Tian arrived at Lin Feng's home.
"Come and eat, I'm just serving it now," Lin Feng called out.
Today, he had prepared a peanut and soy milk congee, with sunny-side-up eggs for the babies. He had also stir-fried two vegetable dishes and laid out some pastries. It's often said: eat a good breakfast, a filling lunch, and a light dinner. Lin Feng always put the most care into breakfast.
Liu Qing once again silently envied Zhang Yuxi for having such a husband and sighed deeply to herself.
Tian Tian ate with great gusto, exclaiming how delicious Lin Feng's food was. She wished she could eat his cooking all the time.
On the fourth day, however, Tian Tian was clearly unhappy during breakfast. She pouted, looking sullen, and her sad little face was painful to see.
"What's wrong?" Lin Feng asked gently.
Tian Tian sighed like a little adult. "Sigh, Mom and Dad are fighting!"
The quadruplets were surprised. Fighting? Their parents, Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi, never fought. They had never even seen them argue!
The third baby asked, puzzled, "Why are they fighting?"
Resting her chin in her hands, Tian Tian explained, "Because Dad doesn't come home. He hasn't been home for a long, long time! He always lies to Mom and me, saying he'll be back soon, but then he always says he's too busy with work and has to earn money, so he can't come back! He says he's earning money to buy yummy food for me, and the prettiest Barbie dolls! But I don't want Barbie dolls, I want my dad!"
Her last sentence was utterly poignant and heartbreaking to hear.
For as long as the quadruplets could remember, Lin Feng had always been there for them. He rarely stayed away from home, and even if he did, it was only for a day or two. The only exceptions were their parents' honeymoon and a trip they took to a hot spring. With their father always present, they couldn't truly understand Tian Tian's longing.
Lin Feng affectionately patted Tian Tian's head. "What would you like to eat today, Tian Tian? Uncle will make it for you!"
"I want to eat shrimp balls!" Tian Tian said immediately.
Lin Feng smiled. "Okay, Uncle will go and make them for you."
Tian Tian looked at him with envy. "Uncle, it would be so nice if my dad was like you!"
Lin Feng had no answer for that.
For lunch, the babies had noodles with shrimp balls. Lin Feng himself ate some spiced beef. After finishing his chores, he played with the children for a while before putting them down for their afternoon nap. He usually napped for about half an hour as well.
He was awakened by a phone call from Liu Qing. She told him that Shen Tiantian's father, Shen Yuqing, was coming over soon to pick Tian Tian up.
Unable to fall back asleep, Lin Feng went downstairs just as the video doorbell rang. The monitor showed a man standing outside.
"Hello, I'm Shen Tiantian's father, Shen Yuqing. I'm here to pick up my daughter."
Lin Feng opened the door and said flatly, "Come in."
Shen Yuqing was nearly 1.8 meters tall, but standing next to Lin Feng, he was shorter by half a head. Though he was a handsome and dapper man, he seemed to pale in comparison to Lin Feng.
Lin Feng was dressed in comfortable loungewear. After Shen Yuqing was seated, Lin Feng asked, "Tea or water?"
Shen Yuqing discreetly surveyed the room before replying, "Water, thank you!"
Lin Feng poured him a glass of water and also cut up some fruit.
"Where's Tian Tian?" Shen Yuqing asked.
"She's upstairs napping. She should be up in about half an hour."
"I heard from Liu Qing," Shen Yuqing said gratefully. "Thank you for everything. We've really troubled you these past few days."
Lin Feng laughed. "Liu Qing and I were junior high classmates, and now she and my wife are colleagues. Our kids are in the same class, so it's no trouble at all."
As he spoke, Lin Feng went to the kitchen to juice some fruit and bake a few small buns for the children. He checked the time. "They should be waking up. I'll go get them."
"I'll go with you," Shen Yuqing said, standing up.
When they reached the master bedroom on the third floor, Shen Yuqing was stunned to see a row of small beds. His wife and daughter hadn't told him about the quadruplets.
Lin Feng woke Tian Tian first. "Tian Tian, your dad is here!"
Tian Tian, who had been groggy, woke up instantly. "Dad? Where's Dad?"
Shen Yuqing looked at his daughter. "Tian Tian, Daddy's here!"
Tian Tian scrambled down from her little bed and threw herself into his arms. "Daddy, I missed you so much!"
"Daddy missed you too!"
"You're a liar!"
"I said I'd be back today. See? Daddy didn't lie to you, did I?"
"Hmph!"
Lin Feng proceeded to wake the other children. One by one, they all murmured softly, "Daddy!"
As Lin Feng was dressing the third baby, she leaned softly against his chest. "Daddy's the best!" The third baby had the most easy-going personality. She was also very generous and would share anything she had with her older siblings without hesitation. She valued the experience of having something, not the idea of possessing it forever. In fact, if she didn't care for something, she had no desire to have it in the first place. Moreover, her sweet personality was very endearing, so her older siblings always doted on her. Consequently, when Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi gave her special affection, the others never said a word. Sometimes, they even took the initiative to look after their little sister. And so, the third baby grew more and more pampered.
Tian Tian declared with a touch of pride, "This is my daddy!"
The quadruplets all greeted Shen Yuqing, "Hello, Uncle!"
This made Shen Yuqing feel quite embarrassed. "Oh, look at me, it's my first time visiting and I came empty-handed..."
"Don't worry about it," Lin Feng said with a laugh. "We don't stand on ceremony here."
Shen Yuqing wanted to take Tian Tian home, but she refused, saying she wanted to wait for her mom so they could all go home together.
Lifting her little face, Tian Tian said, "Mommy said that after she finishes work today, she can spend time with me!"
Shen Yuqing smiled. "Alright, we'll wait for Mommy together!"
Lin Feng brought over the warmed juice and small buns. "Who wants some?"
Unsurprisingly, all the children wanted some. Warming the juice had made it a bit tarter, so Lin Feng had added a little sugar to the buns. While the children ate, Tian Tian fed a piece to her father.
"Thank you, Tian Tian!"
Her eyes sparkling, Tian Tian said, "Daddy, Uncle's cooking is super, super delicious! Mommy and I love Uncle's cooking the most!"
"Really?"
Tian Tian nodded earnestly. "Daddy, can you cook?"
Seeing the hopeful look on his daughter's face, Shen Yuqing shook his head.
Tian Tian's face fell into an immediate pout. "You can't? Daddy, you're so silly!"
"Daddy can learn!" Shen Yuqing said quickly.
That made Tian Tian happy again.
The second baby came over and said, "Tian Tian said the grandma at their house left, so she and Auntie Taozi don't have food to eat. They're so pitiful!"
The fourth baby swallowed a mouthful of his bun. "Uncle, you should cook for Tian Tian later! Daddies are all great at cooking."
The second and fourth babies were the most meddlesome. The fourth baby's statement, however, was clearly based on a misunderstanding. It wasn't that all fathers could cook—it was that *their* father, Lin Feng, could cook. From their perspective, since their mothers, Zhang Yuxi and Liu Qing, couldn't cook, it only made sense that the fathers had to, right?
Tian Tian's eyes shone brightly as she looked at her father.
Bracing himself, Shen Yuqing said, "Daddy will learn!"
