After breakfast, Zhao Lizhen and Zhang Fuyong took the babies out to play in the yard.
To keep the babies entertained, Zhang Fuyong had dug a small, shallow pond. It was only twenty centimeters wide, fifteen centimeters deep, and two meters long. A few small betta fish they had bought, each no bigger than a baby's palm, swam inside. Zhang Fuyong had even made special fishing rods. With fish feed hung on the hooks, they looked quite authentic.
The babies sat in a row, each holding a fishing rod and fishing with great concentration. Zhao Lizhen and Zhang Fuyong joined in as well. And believe it or not, it actually worked!
Third Baby was the first to catch a fish. When she saw the rod move, she gave it a tug, and up came the fish. Her brothers and sisters were so envious!
Clutching her little bucket, Third Baby toddled excitedly back into the house. "Daddy, Mommy, I caught a fishy!"
In the living room, Zhang Yuxi was showing Lin Feng an old family photo album. Seeing Third Baby coming, Lin Feng quickly reached out to catch her, afraid she might fall.
"Look, I caught this!" she said proudly. "I was the first to catch one. My brothers and sisters haven't caught any!"
Seeing Third Baby showing off her prize, the couple couldn't help but shower her with praise for her skill.
"Wow, Third Baby, you're so amazing and clever!"
"Not bad at all, keep it up!"
Third Baby nodded vigorously and, still holding her little bucket, toddled back outside.
Lin Feng called after her, "Run slowly! Be careful not to fall."
"Okay!"
Third Baby ran back and sat down obediently. A moment later, they saw First Baby also pull up a fish, a delighted, elegant smile gracing his face.
Third Baby immediately cheered, "You're awesome, brother!"
Third Baby was the most serene of the bunch, so she fished with patience and calm. First Baby, Second Baby, and Fourth Baby, however, were more impulsive. If a fish swam one way, their hook would immediately follow. How could they catch anything like that? First Baby was a bit better, and he soon caught another fish.
Then there were Fourth Baby and Second Baby. Fourth Baby was the type who didn't care if he caught a fish or not, as long as he was having fun. Second Baby, on the other hand, really wanted a cute little fish. But because he was sitting right next to Fourth Baby, he couldn't catch a thing. He looked at Zhao Lizhen with a pitiful, wronged expression.
"Grandma..."
Zhao Lizhen quickly moved Second Baby away from Fourth Baby, having him sit with Third Baby instead. Less than two minutes later, a fish was on his hook.
By the time Fourth Baby had played his fill, he noticed that his brothers and sister each had a little fish. He was the only one without! That sense of disparity can affect even the youngest children. But Fourth Baby was carefree and unconventional. He decisively squatted down and started trying to scoop fish out with his little bucket.
Yup, that move was classic Fourth Baby!
With Fourth Baby stirring up the water, how could the other babies possibly fish? Then again, they soon decided that scooping fish seemed like a lot of fun, too. The grandparents rolled up the children's sleeves, watching them play. Seeing the smiles on their faces, Zhao Lizhen couldn't help but smile as well.
"Having many children really is a wonderful thing."
「On the other side.」
Looking through the photo album, Lin Feng realized that Zhang Yuxi truly had been beautiful her entire life. Under Zhao Lizhen's influence, she had started learning dance at a young age and was remarkably flexible. He had always assumed the mother and daughter would follow the same path and both become dancers. Unexpectedly, as she grew up, Zhang Yuxi discovered that she preferred being a teacher and educating students. In the end, she resolutely gave up dancing. Though Zhao Lizhen felt it was a pity, she fully supported her daughter's decision.
In her youth, Zhao Lizhen could only be described as stunningly gorgeous. Even now, she was a beautiful and elegant lady, her features still holding a trace of her once incomparable stage presence.
"Honey, let's have our wedding next summer," Lin Feng said.
Zhang Yuxi paused for a moment, her heart filling with anticipation. "Okay."
Every woman harbors fantasies and dreams about her own wedding. Back in high school, Zhang Yuxi used to imagine how her Prince Charming would marry her. On that day, she would be wearing a pure white wedding dress, and he would arrive on a white horse!
At noon, it was Lin Feng's turn to cook, but Zhao Lizhen suggested, "Let's go out for lunch. I know a restaurant with great food. I'll take you to try it."
With that, the family got ready and headed out.
Modu was a first-tier city. Zhang Yuxi's family was considered upper-middle class, and Zhao Lizhen was a fairly well-known dancer who, even in retirement, often served as a judge for competitions.
They arrived at a high-class Chinese restaurant. Since it was the peak of lunchtime, every seat was taken except for spots in the private dining areas. These rooms, however, had a minimum charge per person, though infants weren't counted. There were no small, independent private rooms available, only larger partitioned areas that could hold two or three tables.
Zhang Yuxi couldn't help but exclaim, "Their business is still this good."
They were seated at a round table for six, and the restaurant provided high chairs for the children. Lin Feng had fed the babies before they left, so they were content to play with their toys. Zhao Lizhen ordered the restaurant's specialties and then handed the menu to Zhang Yuxi.
"Order whatever you two would like."
Zhang Yuxi leaned in close to Lin Feng. "Honey, this is my favorite! It's delicious, you have to try it! And this one..."
Zhao Lizhen smiled. "Don't order too much if we can't finish it. We can always come back."
The waitress quickly keyed in their order on a tablet. She brought them fruit and tea, then stood silently to the side. Her gaze, however, kept drifting to the babies.
Oh my gosh, quadruplets! Every single one is so adorable! Seeing them makes even a single person like me want to get married and have kids.
Suddenly, Third Baby's toy fell to the floor. The waitress hurried over to pick it up. "Here you go, little one!" she said with a smile.
Third Baby gave her a sweet smile and said softly, "Thank you, auntie!"
Wow, my heart just melted! I can't handle the cuteness!
"You're welcome!" The waitress couldn't control herself. "Little one, how old are you?"
Third Baby held up one finger. "One... and a half!"
The waitress was quite surprised; she wouldn't have guessed the girl was that young, seeing how well-developed she was.
About fifteen minutes later, all the dishes were on the table.
Ever since Fourth Baby had that spicy incident, the memory seemed to be gradually fading. The power of the foodie within him was beginning to awaken once more. He blinked his little eyes, staring at the delicious spread on the table. Suddenly, the toy in his hand lost all its appeal. Unlike Da Bao, who was just staring longingly without doing anything, Fourth Baby was a boy of action.
He called out, "Grandma!"
Zhao Lizhen quickly smiled. "What is it, Fourth Baby?"
Just as Fourth Baby was about to ask for a hug, Second Baby cut in first. "Grandma, Er Bao missed you! Hugs!"
Fourth Baby looked at Second Baby, a little stunned, as if to say, "What are you doing?"
Zhao Lizhen picked up Second Baby, her face beaming. "Did Er Bao miss Grandma?"
Now, Second Baby's sweet words flowed effortlessly. He wrapped his arms around Zhao Lizhen's neck. "Er Bao missed Grandma's hugs..." He tilted his head, sniffed the air, and asked with a curious expression, "Grandma, what are you eating? It smells so good. Can Er Bao have a little bite?"
Faced with such a little angel, Zhao Lizhen hesitated. "Ah, this..."
Second Baby blinked his big eyes. "No? Not even a tiny bit?"
Zhao Lizhen couldn't refuse. "Let Grandma see what you can eat..."
Second Baby quickly added, "Er Bao is the best eater when it comes to Fan Fan, not picky at all!"
In the end, Zhao Lizhen gave the baby a piece of steamed fish. After carefully checking for bones, she fed it to Second Baby, reminding him, "Eat slowly, just nibble."
After one bite, Second Baby's eyes lit up. "Delicious!"
Fourth Baby: "!!!"
First Baby: "!!!"
Zhang Fuyong looked over at them.
Just as Fourth Baby was thinking that it was now or never, he saw First Baby beside him. He couldn't hold back for the sake of food. First Baby rarely acted cute; he was always the practical type. But for a bite to eat, he too smiled at Zhang Fuyong. "Grandpa, Da Bao wants a hug too!"
Zhang Fuyong laughed and picked him up. "Did Da Bao miss Grandpa?"
Once in Zhang Fuyong's arms, First Baby didn't answer the question but pointed at the delicious dishes on the table. "Grandpa, I want to eat!"
"Alright, let's see... How about you try this? It looks like it's made of flour... Da Bao, you can only have a little, not too much."
With the tasty food in his mouth, First Baby ate with a joyous grin.
Fourth Baby: "..."
He looked from one person to the next, impatiently wiggling his little bottom.
From the very beginning, Zhang Yuxi and Lin Feng had been watching everything unfold. If they didn't understand each baby's personality, who would believe it? One-and-a-half-year-olds with such acting skills! Especially Second Baby, whose performance came so naturally. His sweet little mouth chattered away, creating a smokescreen. First Baby, on the other hand, was an awkward actor, no match for Second Baby at all. As for Fourth Baby, with his anxious little expression, the couple found him both adorable and funny. They wondered what Si Bao, the little foodie, would do next.
At home, there was a rule that the babies couldn't eat the adults' food. They were still too young, and their palates couldn't handle strongly flavored meals. For one, it wasn't good for their health. For another, if they got used to strong flavors, they might refuse to eat their own blander food later. But having some once in a while was acceptable.
Fourth Baby's gaze fell on them. The couple shared a look and tacitly lowered their heads, pretending they hadn't seen a thing. Noticing each other's actions, they couldn't help but exchange a smile.
Finally, Fourth Baby turned his attention to the nearby waitress. Suddenly, he felt the need to pee, and an idea flashed in his mind.
The waitress stepped forward. "Little treasure, what's wrong?"
Fourth Baby gestured for the waitress to let him down. "I have to pee-pee!"
Once he's out of this high chair, he'll be free.
"Do you want to get down?"
Fourth Baby nodded. "I have to pee-pee."
The waitress smiled. "Auntie will take you, okay?"
Lin Feng stood up. "No need to trouble you. I'll take him."
He wanted to see if Si Bao really needed to go or was just making an excuse.
He took Fourth Baby to the restroom, and it turned out he really did have to go.
Afterward, Fourth Baby looked up at Lin Feng. "Daddy, I'm hungry... I want to eat Fan Fan too..."
Seeing him like this, Lin Feng felt a sense of relief. Even as a foodie, Fourth Baby hadn't thrown a tantrum or made a fuss; he had a very good temperament.
"Alright, but just this once, okay?"
Fourth Baby cupped Lin Feng's face in his hands and planted a firm kiss on his forehead. "Thank you, Daddy! I love you the most!"
Of course, he couldn't play favorites, so the other babies had to have some too. There was very little on the table that the babies could eat, so Lin Feng carefully selected a few items and fed them small bites. One by one, they were all content, their little cravings appeased.
Once the babies were out of their high chairs, they had no intention of getting back in.
The waitress smiled and said, "We have a children's play area upstairs. You can take the babies there to play."
Zhao Lizhen wiped her hands. "I'm finished. You all continue eating. I'll go with the babies."
