Hecte smiled helplessly as memories came flooding in. As their leader, she was like a mother to all of them, and she had really taken it upon herself to treat them like her kids, so of course she was very happy with the changes.
She stared at Aegon, thinking, 'That is just one of the reasons why we like you so much.'
Of course, the main reason they loved him was because he was just like Xiu. He gave them the respect and affection he thought they deserved and never once took their servitude for granted.
Even though he scolded them from time to time, everyone knew that he was very sincere and open about his feelings for them.
How could they not like someone like him when all of them had been love-deprived for so long?
She shook off those thoughts and asked, "What's the second reason, Boss?"
"Quite a simple one," he answered, still looking through the rocks. "The Kingdom is huge and slopes like these are common, so why not use them for farming? But we aren't going to make them ourselves, so we need to make sure everything can be built by ordinary people."
A look of realization shone in her eyes as Hecte muttered, "So that's why you used the rocks."
"Yup. We need to make sure Mages aren't needed in the construction of steps or anything really," Aegon said, turning around to face the terraces. "The digging can easily be done by ordinary people. It would just take more manpower and more time. Wait. JASON!!"
Everyone flinched at his shout, including Hecte. Fortunately, she had erected a barrier around their construction site so the voice wouldn't leak outside.
Curious, she looked down to find what made him shout like that. Apparently, Aegon had decided to create the terrace in one go, so he assigned two people on one terrace to make the steps.
The steps started from midway down to the river. It was something Aegon had calculated based on the usual water level of the Moon River before things went worse.
If things returned to normal, he wanted these terrace farms to still work properly.
But none of that was the reason he shouted... and it only took a second for Hecte to understand why he reacted like that. She facepalmed, or at least did so mentally.
While four of the steps looked good side by side, the last one was clearly much different. It was very small length-wise, but huge width-wise. The step was protruding outward like a horn.
And of course, it had to be Jason who messed up.
Aegon hurriedly went down and arrived near Jason in no time. He stared at the wiggling mass of shadows and asked, "What are you doing?"
"Making the step just like Boss ordered too," Jason said, his voice seemingly proud. "I remembered your measurements well and made this step. Is something wrong with it, Boss?"
"Well, guess what, it looks like the dick of this hill," Aegon smiled, but it didn't look like a smile to Jason or anyone else really. "Check how others did."
This was the first time Jason looked at the others, and when he did, he instantly realized his mistakes and almost wanted to bang his head against the rocks.
"Umm, Boss, I think I put everything in opposite," Jason said, his shadowy form stiffening as his humanoid body became more visible due to his embarrassment.
He could even hear the crackles of laughter from his colleagues which embarrassed him even further. 'Should I become my mercenary self again and kill them all? Yeah, that seems like a better solution.'
Aegon glanced at the others and they instantly shut up, going back to their work. He then focused back on Jason and began to explain everything in detail so he wouldn't mess up again this time. The only good thing was that they were quite powerful Mages, so mistakes like this could be undone easily too.
Hecte stared at Jason being scolded and couldn't help but let out a quiet laugh. She had known him for almost two decades and knew his deadly side, yet this deadly mercenary was now being scolded by a fifteen-year-old boy while keeping his head down.
It was a funny sight considering how all of them were far stronger than Aegon, yet they all feared his anger too. It was simply because they were afraid of him getting upset over their actions.
'What a cute group I have. Why did I never realize?' Hecte mused to herself. 'Well, with Chief Xiu around, nobody can call these bloodthirsty devils cute. What a person you are to change even these people, Boss.'
Finally, Aegon managed to explain things well enough to Jason for him to make the steps properly this time. Just like that, they moved upwards and began to make more steps so they looked like giant stairs leading down to the river.
The process was also quite simple since they just needed to carve out enough space and then flatten it while using wooden planks and rocks to make the borders so that the soil stayed in one place.
The only part where Aegon encountered problems was making the drainage system for the farming setup. It was the most important part considering it would supply the water and irrigate the fields.
The simplest method that he used was to make drainage channels on the sides, paralleling the walls, and also some ditches at the back of each step which would allow the water to come down from the upper step along with an inlet and outlet.
The side drainage channels would also allow the water to spread evenly. In case there was a heavy rainfall, it would allow the water to run off without damaging the soil and the field itself.
Aegon tapped on the stone walls that accompanied the drainage channels on the sides and thought, 'They are sturdy enough to even handle merciless cloud-breaking… or maybe not. But they should be fine even in heavy rain.'
He had never personally seen terrace farming and he also didn't have manuals from the system like he had with most things he decided to invent in this world, so he was quite nervous if this would work or not.
'The calculations are on point. It should work.'
