Adventures of the last Wild Dragon

Chapter 94: Battle for the Stars (7)

As the front line of beasts clashed against the gargantuan guardian, spells and abilities flew past to impact against its twinkling carapace. Whilst the guardian was fast and ever moving due to its immense size it was still unable to avoid most of the attacks aimed at it. No instead it simply tanked the damage.

It did however, try to avoid attacks coming from a few individuals in particular. These being primarily Violet and her vicious void attacks that simply ignored the guardians defences. The ice elemental, who's pinpoint precision reliably found gaps in the beasts armour. And the attacks launched by the only other giant in the clearing, that of the trunked beast that had followed Violet.

The trunked beast had opted to move into close range and was directly confronting one of the heads of the guardian. A thick layer of stone now coated the giants thick hide and spears of stone formed around it.

The guardian for its part seemed content to trade the occasional blow with the beast whilst simultaneously sending its other head to lash out at those who got too close to it.

The two giants of the battlefield were a central point of the battle and the other heavy hitters were concentrated around their titanic collisions.

Shields of both void and ice would periodically sprout up to help block a blow from the guardian. Or alternatively the two ranged specialists would send powerful blasts of magic to divert an attack whilst scoring some additional damage to the guardian.

Yet the guardian seemed unbothered by their continual defiance. If anything it seemed almost… bored.

Whilst it's attacks were vicious and had already claimed multiple lives, it seemed in no rush to end this battle. And it had not even displayed any magical abilities yet either.

Granted Violet was sticking to her most basic void bolts and spears for now as well, and she believed that the ice elemental was also hiding some trump cards of its own. So it was now just a case of finding out who would be forced to bring up the ante first.

Whilst the ranged attackers and the front liners were engaged in their battle with the guardian. Around 20 beasts were hugging the outside of the dome, seemingly not wanting to engage in the deadly battle before them.

These were the weakest of the beasts that had managed to arrive here. Mostly thanks to following behind the stronger beasts that now fought furiously. Saddly for them hiding at the back was not quite as safe as they may have hoped it to be.

During the final few minutes till the timer ran out the last of the maddened beasts had been slain. So it was only the same that survived till now. Yet after the awe inspiring display of presence that the guardian had shown off. The mental state of these cowardly beasts had been shaken.

Coupled with the corrupting influence of the Star Tree, they stood no chance of resisting the infection of insanity.

So now as the champions fought a frontal assault, the suddenly had a new foe to face from behind them.

And under the guidance of the insidious tree a target had been selected for them to take down. For whilst the tree knew its guardian was mighty, it saw no reason in not taking out the one foe that had an actual chance of truly injuring it.

As Violet was focused on tearing a hole in the guardians armour with her void magics she almost failed to react in time to the incoming attack from behind.

She only saw the blur of motion in her peripheral vision before instinctively taking a step, and appearing several meters to her side. She looked at the spot she was just in to see a bark skinned boar of some kind rising from a small crater. When the beast looked her way she noticed the invidious red glow in its eyes.

With a growl she quickly spun up a void spear and repaired to send it towards the mad beast, yet was forced to dodge out of the way one more as another foe lunged at her, its eyes too gleaming with insanity.

She then looked around her to note with frustration that she now found herself surrounded by beasts, all sharing a singular feature. Glowing red eyes and a look of incessant fury directed solely at her.

Several more spears manifested above her as she readied herself to engage with the foes.

However, much to Violet's surprise a figure smashed into the side of one of the larger beast surrounding her in a burst of electricity. The devistated body of that beast sent flying from the impact. In its place now stood a familiar blue scaled dragon. A fang filled smile found its way onto Violet's face as the two dragons teamed up to deal with the annoying mad beasts.

Luna was struggling, she had sepersted dozens of legs from the guardian but it seemed to not care how much she mutilated it. Sure she was in a constant dance to avoid said legs as they moved around erratically, but she wove a dance of death as she ducked and weaved between the serrated blades. Her spear flashing forward in powerfull slashes.

Yet the guardian was ever shifting. It's giant body was constantly undulating around, and she had no hope of staying with a singular section its its body. So when she managed to remove a few legs from one section, it would suddenly move and she would be faced with a fully fresh section of legs to her growing annoyance.

Getting sick of this seemingly pointless battle against the legs she glanced around and saw that one of the heads was being engaged by the trunked one and several other strong beasts. Yet the second head was currently unattended.

It was being left to pick off any unlucky beasts that got too close to it. She knew that that could not be allowed to continue. With a reluctant sigh Luna took a step and appeared right below the powerful mandibles and thrust her blade up. A elongated blade of ice rapidly grew out of the tip of her spear and she stabbed into the partially open mouth of the guardian.

It didn't manage to do a lot of damage, yet it did draw blood. It also managed to achieve one other fact. It pissed off the guardian.

With a screech the giant head turned to glare at the puny beastkin below that dared to strike it.

In a movement so fast that Luna had but a moment to respond the beast lashed down towards her, its mandibles contracting to try and tear her in half. She dove back, narrowly avoiding the initial strike. Yet did not predict the follow up attack as instead of imbedding its face in the ground, it halted and then swung up, its closed mandibles smashing into the hasty defence of the leopardkin.

She was sent staggering back, a bolt of pain radiating from her shoulder eliciting a short scream of pain from the girl.

Luna somehow managed to stay on her feet though, but had to dive to the side once more as the guardian continued its assult.

She dashed to the side, dove away and used ever trick she knew off to avoid the giants relentless attacks. Yet every exchange was a loosing one. Luna managed to hold out for as long as she could yet eventually a mistake was made and she slipped.

As her movement was disrupted a feeling of dread washed over her as she witnessed the rapidly approaching jaws of death. She closed her eyes, not wanting to witness the incoming attack.

Yet, no attack landed. Instead she felt a soothing feeling emanate through her body and opened her eyes to witness a surprising sight.

The alpha wolf and his pack had pounced onto the head and neck of the guardian, with the Alpha himself having blocked the deadly strike aimed for her. Crackling lightning radiated from the wolf as a vicious growl radiated from the beast. At the same time a new figure was besides her.

Luna looked to the person besides her in surprise, as she beheld a dogkin woman with a tired smile on her pretty face. Water seemed to be flowing from the woman's hand and was gently embracing Luna. Wherever the water passed any lingering aces and pains were washed away.

"Well. I don't know who you are, but thanks!" Luna said with a relieved smile. "But let's get back to killing this giant bug!"
