Adventures of the last Wild Dragon

Chapter 65: Searching for the Star

With the advent of the regional announcement the forest came alive with noise. Beasts of all shape and size suddenly diverted from their usual hunting grounds and began to congregate on the location that could either make them or break them.

Two companions moved silently through this forest, the shadows surrounding them acted to hide them from view from all but the most attentive of beasts. And whilst normally the keaner eyed beasts may choose to pounce on such a hidden foe today that was not the case as they too were motivated to advance and no beast was willing to engage in battle before it was required in case they injure themselves.

It was a strange calmness that overtook the normally brutal environment that dominated this area as the mass migration happened. No sounds of battle could be heard, only the steady pounding of feet and the flap of wings as everything moved with purpose.

This seeming lack of aggression shown by the various beasts was noted by our companions, unsure as to why nothing was engaging in battle just yet they were not eager to be the first to start a fight. As such they continued their movement towards the centre of the plateau.

They journeyed in this oddly silent forest for a number of hours the tension in the air only growing as time passed. They all knew that it would only be a matter of time till all hell would break loose but for the moment peace reigned.

By the time evening was approaching they had been moving near non stop for the entire day and finally the scenery changed.

Where normally in this environment one could not go a few hours without running into a valley. As they were now within the central region it seemed that paradoxically their were no more valleys for them to cross or go around. Instead they had just been moving through a seemingly normal looking forest, well so long as you discount the lack of battle.

So when they came across a cliff dropping down into darkness that extended in all directions they naturally came to a stop. They found themselves at the edge of a cliff that extended for as far as they could see. It was gently curving in a giant circle, but the strange thing about this was that instead of just being a singular elemental valley what they saw before them was a truly bazar sight.

For below them was clearly a land of shadow which extended for several miles. But this shadow seemed to stop at a certain point before a land of lightning dominated before that too changed into a different environment.

It would appear that in the centre of the Valley of Elements their was a singular giant valley that housed all elements. And in the centre of this valley stood a lone tree, barely visible from the spot that our two companions stood. It was quite the spectacular sight as it stood tall and solitary acting as the true centre of this land.

Violet and Luna stood observing this sight for some time as they tried to make sense of what lay before them. "Could we not just fly straight to it?" Luna asked after a moment. Unsure as to why they could see no beasts doing just that. Instead they saw a number of beasts lining the edge of the valley much like them, all looking down at the landscape that lay before them.

As Violet was about to answer a flying beast actually attempted to fly down towards the tree only to suddenly loose all ballence as if it was battling a sudden and intense wind. It was buffeted and knocked off course away from the tree before it found it selves violently thrown to the ground with a fearful shriek and a muted splat as it was dashed against the ice coated ground of one of the middle layers of the valley.

"Umm I think that is why nothing if flying there. Seems like some serious winds protect the centre. We will have to go by foot because I don't want to end up like that creature." Violet said dryly.

"Yeah I guess so… should we rest now or just go straight down? I dont really fancy wandering into that land of shadow when I'm tired. Pretty sure I can still see some things moving down their and it gives me the creeps."

Indeed their was movement in the sea of shadows. Disfigured shapes moved unnaturally below them as they moved erratically.

It seemed like their was a general consensus amongst all beasts that stood at the edge to not walk down just yet. Every beast here held obvious trepidation towards venturing into that environment. Something that our girls also shared, their was just something that set every instinct screaming in alarm when considering venturing down into the darkness below.

And so they backed off for now and settled down to rest some and also to che k how long they have till the fruit blooms.

[Time remaining - 17hrs 48min]

"Well the sun should begin to rise again in about 9 hours so we could rest up and head down with dawns first light?" That should still leave us with plenty of time to make it to the cente… I think."

Luna looked at Violet as she pondered that doing some quick calculations herself as she tried to work out exactly how far they will have to travel before nodding in agreement. "Yeah I think that makes sense, let's settle down a bit away from the edge. We should also take watches their are too many beasts around here to let our guards down. Even if everything is still strangely calm here."

And it was, more and more beasts had arrived as they gazed out over the cliff. It was to the point that the nearest beast was hardly 30 meters away from them and all around the cliff innumerable beasts stood in silent vigil as they all observed the scenery before them. It would almost be a majestic sight if their wasn't the underlying tension that weighed down on them like a constantly increasing pressure.

Every moment that no violence occurred only seemed to add to the tension as if every creature was just waiting for the switch to be flipped and for all our battle to occur.

Making their way back from that cliff our companions settled down by a fallen tree. They did not cook anything as that would just be asking for trouble that they did not need. So simple ate some of the leftovers they had in storage.

Violet offered to take first watch and Luna gratefully agreed as she lay down against violets side and was covered by a wing whilst the dragon kept her eyes open and alert of anything that could be approaching.
