Chen Yao was fast asleep. Lin Nan had no interest in the computer and sat with her chin propped on her hand, thinking about what would happen when she returned to the countryside with her mother. How would those relatives react if they found out about her situation?
The relatives shouldn't matter much, right?
Although she had lived surrounded by various relatives in the countryside until elementary school graduation, afterward her family only contacted relatives during winter and summer vacations, visiting her maternal grandfather's house for just two days each break.
The relatives she had good feelings toward were probably only a few cousins plus her maternal grandparents. The others were rarely seen, people she couldn't even remember how to address properly.
Those cousins had scattered in different directions over the years, only meeting during New Year gatherings with little contact otherwise.
So she only needed her maternal grandparents to accept her.
As for her paternal grandparents, they had passed away when Lin Nan was in middle school. She didn't like those relatives anyway, and with her father demanding she not go embarrass them, she hadn't planned to consider them at all.
In the unfamiliar environment, Lin Nan felt somewhat uneasy. But when she shifted her gaze to the sleeping Chen Yao, that unease and anxiety instantly vanished without a trace.
"Girl, come eat some fruit."
Just as she perked up and prepared to play a game, the bedroom door opened again. Chen Yao's mother entered carrying a plate of cut fruit pieces, warmly greeting her: "Eating fruit after meals is good for your health."
As a guest, Lin Nan felt it would be quite impolite to refuse. Even though she was still full from lunch, she could only smile and accept: "Thank you, Auntie."
"No need to be so polite, we're all family."
Family?
The smile on Lin Nan's face froze.
Although she knew Chen Yao's parents considered her Chen Yao's girlfriend, how could they accept it so quickly? And Chen Yao should have explained, right?
She watched Chen Yao's mother leave the room and sighed deeply, not knowing what to do.
Moments later, Chen Yao's father also enthusiastically entered the room, bringing a bowl of white fungus bird's nest porridge: "Here, have some afternoon tea. Bird's nest, it's good for beauty."
...??
It's only been half an hour since I ate lunch, right?
"Look how good your auntie's skin is. It's from eating this stuff."
Lin Nan realized Chen Yao's parents might have already considered her their daughter-in-law.
She couldn't refuse, and didn't even dare leave any uneaten. She had never even seen bird's nest before, only heard it was expensive. So even though she was too full to eat anything more, she had to drink it clean under Chen Yao's father's gaze.
She felt her stomach might explode.
Lin Nan somewhat suspected that at this rate, after staying at Chen Yao's house for just a few hours, his parents might run to her house to propose marriage, right?
Their enthusiasm was really a bit too much, wasn't it?
Fortunately, Chen Yao's parents weren't too excessive, perhaps seeing that Lin Nan nearly vomited from being too full while drinking the bird's nest porridge.
Throughout the afternoon in Chen Yao's room, Lin Nan could vaguely hear his parents discussing her in the living room.
Generally about what their psychological expectation for bride price should be, that the apartment bought in the provincial capital should be renovated, whether Chen Yao might be impotent and if they should take him to the hospital for a checkup, and similar topics.
They worried that since both were still students it might affect their studies and future work, worried that Lin Nan's small chest meant insufficient milk...
They seemed quite anxious. Although the two elders appeared quite open-minded, this was still just a county town after all. No matter how open-minded parents were, seeing other families' and relatives' children marrying early while looking at their own brainless son would make them extremely anxious.
Lin Nan couldn't hear clearly from inside the room, but she caught some key content that made her face red with embarrassment. She could only put on headphones and use game sounds to block out Chen Yao's parents' conversation from the living room.
Finally, around 4 PM, Chen Yao woke up, and her mother's phone call came.
Her long-awaited mother had finally arrived.
"Let's go, time to visit your hometown for a couple days." Chen Yao got up, yawning as he put on his jacket. Looking up, he saw Lin Nan's flushed pretty face.
Lin Nan looked much more normal now - adorably confused and bashful, countless times more cute than her previous numb and empty-eyed appearance. It seemed his parents had done quite a bit of work while he was sleeping?
"Mm." Lin Nan temporarily forgot about her father's existence. With the prospect of meeting her mother soon, her mood naturally lifted considerably.
She hurriedly dragged her suitcase from the corner, put Cola in the cat carrier, then couldn't wait to leave this place.
Chen Yao's parents were indeed very good to her, but really too good. She wasn't actually Chen Yao's girlfriend and found it difficult to bear. Right now she just wanted to leave quickly.
"Remember to explain things clearly to your parents," she said while using her phone's front camera to check her appearance, tidying her somewhat messy hair. "The misunderstanding is too big, and I don't dare speak up..."
About to meet her mother, she naturally wanted to present her best appearance.
"I tried, but they won't listen." Chen Yao waited for Lin Nan to fix her appearance, teasing: "If you learn makeup in the future, going out will probably take half an hour."
"I don't want to learn makeup."
"Mm, with natural beauty like yours, there's no need." Chen Yao picked up the suitcase and stood at the bedroom door, impatiently urging: "Hurry up, your mom is probably already here."
"Mm-hmm."
Lin Nan quickly put down her phone, grabbed the cat carrier and followed Chen Yao outside.
"Leaving already? Won't you stay for dinner?" Chen Yao's mother hurried out from the kitchen to persuade them to stay: "I prepared lots of good things for tonight. If you don't stay to eat, it'll all go to waste."
"Mom, I already said Lin Nan was leaving this afternoon. Why did you prepare dinner for her?"
Hearing this, Chen Yao's mother immediately glared at Chen Yao, then stepped forward, grabbed his hand and pulled him into the kitchen, giving instructions in a low voice that Lin Nan couldn't hear.
"Perform well when you meet the in-laws this time. Don't be like at home acting like a pig lying in bed all day. Be active, volunteer to do any work you see..." She glanced around the kitchen, bent down to open the cabinet door, and pulled out a box of yogurt from inside. "Take this as a meeting gift. This was too sudden, so I had no time to prepare anything."
...??
I'm not meeting in-laws!
"Oh right, your dad has an unopened bottle of red wine that seems to be worth seven or eight hundred, perfect as a gift."
"I’m telling you it’s unnecessary..."
"Does saying it's unnecessary make it so?!" Chen Yao's mother left him and rushed off to find the red wine.
But when she found the red wine and returned to the living room, she discovered Chen Yao and Lin Nan had already left. The living room was completely empty, so she could only take out her frustration on Chen Yao's father who was watching TV.
Meanwhile, the two arrived at the street outside the residential complex. Lin Nan immediately recognized her uncle's car, dropped the cat carrier in her arms, and excitedly ran forward.
"Mom!"
