How to Live as a Swordmaster of the Enemy Nation

Ch. 55

Great Radiant Sword

Suuuuuk—

Because everyone was pulling with all their strength to draw the sword, except for Gregory, who noticed it, they all fell at once.

Thud—

"Ugh!"

"Ah! It suddenly came out!"

They walked forward to pick up the fallen sword again.

There were those among them who desired to possess the sword, befitting of its reputation as the legendary blade. However, that hope was quickly revealed to be a futile dream.

The reason was that, except for Alessandro, no matter how much anyone tried to pick it up again, for some reason, they couldn't lift the sword. Watching them in their pitiful state, Gregory said,

"Have you still not realized who the owner of this sword is?"

Adrian asked Gregory,

"What do you mean by that?"

"That sword can only be wielded by Alessandro among us."

Adrian suddenly remembered the moment when they tried to pull out the Great Radiant Sword. Everyone had rushed up and put their hands on the sword, but for some reason, there was no response at all.

The moment Alessandro touched it, the sword was drawn. Which meant that this sword must be related to Alessandro.

The companions finally realized that only Alessandro could wield this sword. However, perhaps due to lingering regret, or maybe to check if Gregory's claim was really true, they decided to experiment with the Great Radiant Sword.

"Of course, it's not that I don't believe Gregory, but I am curious. How about we let only Alessandro try to lift it?"

Brea murmured in agreement,

"Hmph... A legendary sword is only fitting for me, yet Alessandro's taking it? There's no harm in experimenting."

Alessandro already felt burdened at being given the sword, and now, suddenly being made to participate in this experiment, he hesitated.

When he, yet again, was nudged into lifting the sword alone, he showed that he could easily lift the Great Radiant Sword that wouldn't budge no matter how many others tried together.

Only then did the rest, who had been suspicious, become convinced that the Great Radiant Sword belonged to Alessandro. In any case, they couldn't go against Gregory's orders.

Of course, even if Alessandro was known as someone stupid but strong, Gregory's guess was that those who could wield the sword were limited, and Alessandro was the one presently blessed to do so.

Ernest, with curiosity, asked Gregory,

"But how did you know?"

Gregory, unsure what there was to be asked, replied with a question.

"What about?"

"When you first grabbed the sword, you said you intended to give it to Alessandro."

Gregory replied as if it was nothing special.

"I recommended different swords to each companion, but for Alessandro, I suggested a greatsword. And it just so happened that the Great Radiant Sword was a greatsword."

It was enough to arouse Ernest's curiosity. Gregory hadn't particularly recommended a sword for him, after all.

"Ah... So that was it. I thought maybe you already knew that only Alessandro could lift the sword."

Though the sharpness of the question caught him off-guard, since he had already explained earlier, Ernest let it go.

The moment Alessandro grasped the Great Radiant Sword, light wrapped around his hand. For a moment, the sword radiated light. Excited, he jumped around the ruins.

"So... It's light!"

Gregory, looking satisfied, put a hand on his shoulder.

"Do you like it?"

Until now, Alessandro's main difficulty must have been the weight of the greatsword. But if he were to use this lightweight Great Radiant Sword, surely it would maximize his strength.

Gregory spoke to everyone in a not-so-loud voice.

"Let's head back now."

And so they returned by wagon. Seeing the dowsing rods placed on one side of the wagon, Alessandro laughed.

"By the way, bringing those pieces of iron turned out to be meaningless."

Adrian pressed close to Alessandro, as if making sure Gregory could overhear, and said with a furrowed brow. He was afraid of what Gregory might say if he heard this.

"Speak quietly, idiot. We wandered around thinking we could find the Great Radiant Sword with the L Rod and ended up running into the giant worm."

When Adrian gave him that look, Alessandro scratched his head, as if just realizing it.

"Is that so? Maybe you're right."

Adrian glanced behind at Gregory to check his reaction. Then, he clenched his fist and knocked Alessandro on the head.

"What do you mean 'maybe'? Idiot. Do you even know how amazing the Great Radiant Sword is? That's just deception."

"Ah! Why'd you hit me? I was just saying it wasn't found with the L Rod."

Ernest, watching them bicker, hurried to mediate.

"Well, anyway, despite all the trouble, we ended up with the Great Radiant Sword. Let's hurry home and get some rest."

As they barely calmed down, Gregory turned his gaze to them. He was curious why they were bickering again, but soon, listening to Ernest, he spoke sternly.

"Rest? When? Rest on the way back. Once we arrive, we'll be busy again with large-scale training."

When Gregory declared there would be large-scale training, everyone sighed and shook their heads.

"Ugh, of course..."

***

In this way, Gregory and his companions successfully returned to the Dawn Knight Order's headquarters. They even ran out of food on the way, but it was no problem. They arrived right after the food ran out.

Everyone felt elated at the thought of having obtained the legendary sword.

It wasn't a big deal, but Gregory mused that when the people of Arme went in search of the Great Radiant Sword in his previous life, it might have been Alessandro who set out personally. After all, there was no one else who could wield the sword right now.

And though the battles were brief and few, this opportunity allowed them to improve their sense for real combat. Last time, they hadn't been able to use much strength.

This time was different. As with the very first knight order test, facing opponents individually, they believed their sense for actual combat would grow.

Soon after, Gregory entered the reception room where Walter was. This time, he was not alone but with his companions.

"We returned and came straight here."

Walter glanced over Gregory and his companions before speaking.

"None of you seem hurt. I was actually thinking of going out to look for you, since you still hadn't come back."

Gregory agreed with Walter's words. Although he had said he'd return confidently, he hadn't expected they'd fail to return until food ran out. So many thoughts came to him.

He also reflected on how his reckless orders could have caused harm to his companions and learned that not everything will always go as planned.

Gregory thus gained an opportunity for personal growth.

"Yes, that's right. It was a time when I was able to learn a lot."

Walter nodded, and as he waved his hand for them to go out, his eye caught the Great Radiant Sword.

"And what's that sword?"

Gregory glanced briefly at Alessandro.

"It's a sword we found during the exploration."

He didn't offer any far-fetched excuses like it fell from the sky or was picked up by the roadside. He simply stated the fact, hoping Walter wouldn't recognize it.

"Wait, why is that sword here..."

But contrary to Gregory's hopes, Walter seemed to recognize the Great Radiant Sword. In fact, it might have been strange if a scholar like Walter didn't recognize it.

At a glance, the Great Radiant Sword boasted such extraordinary presence that it was hard to consider it an ordinary sword.

Since the sword itself was a greatsword, it naturally stood out.

Walter, stammering, looked back and forth between Gregory and Alessandro. So flustered, he couldn't even ask how they had acquired the sword before giving Gregory an order.

"R-report to the Radiant Light Order commander immediately."

Gregory objected, confused. The reason was that Hemingway had told him that as long as Walter's permission was granted, there was no need to make a separate report; they could just act.

But seeing Walter's reaction, the impact of the Great Radiant Sword must be enormous. He wasn't unaware of that. He just thought Walter might hush it up for them.

"To Father? May I ask why?"

Walter, collecting himself, cleared his throat.

"Ahem. I was just surprised, that's all. It's not a big deal."

"Do you just mean to report it? Doesn't the finder get to keep it?"

"That's right. If we don't immediately report that the legendary sword is in our hands, there's no telling what severe punishment we could face later."

Gregory didn't fail to understand Walter's point. However, since only Alessandro could lift the sword, if it had to be reported directly, then Alessandro himself would need to go to Hemingway.

"Only Alessandro can wield this sword."

"Wait, why is it that only Alessandro can wield it? Is it that heavy?"

Walter was curious about what Gregory meant.

"We're not sure why, but only Alessandro can lift the sword."

Walter fell into thought at Gregory's words, looking back and forth between Gregory and Alessandro.

While Gregory's eyes were sharp, Alessandro wore a dull, dazed expression. Walter, knowing from experience that Alessandro was a genuinely simpleminded fool, sighed.

"Hm... In that case, you'll have to go together."

At that, Alessandro, reading the situation, answered,

"I can go alone!"
