The Frugal Mage

Chapter 167: Retreat

The M-6 Seraphim guns had proven their worth.

The coordinated fire from the Crown Prince's private army began to turn the tide.

As the soldiers followed Mark's command to fire in pairs, the M-6 Seraphim mana guns lit up the valley with streaks of blue light.

Each shot was done perfectly, aimed at joints and weak spots rather than the thick torsos of the golems.

When a bullet struck true, it detonated with a sharp thud, severing limbs or destabilizing cores. The Rock Golems that had been pressing into the middle ranks began to falter…

Thanks to their attack, their formations broke after several synchronized assaults.

Mark watched the battlefield calmly. However, he knew that they had limited ammunition, so they shouldn't be thinking of stopping this Dungeon Outbreak with their small team.

For now, he didn't celebrate the kills, he measured the pressure on the front line as he needed to give precise orders…

With fewer golems pushing from the center, the knights led by Sir Fred were finally able to breathe.

Their formation tightened, and their rhythm returned.

The swordmasters moved with ease as their enchanted blades glowed with heat…

"Don't let them hit you! They hit really hard!"

One knight, his armor covered with mud, ducked beneath a swinging arm and drove his blade upward into a golem's neck.

The enchantment activated and the stone cracked. The golem staggered, its core exposed for a brief moment before another knight struck from the side, finishing the kill.

Another pair worked in tandem… One distracts the golem with feints, the other circles behind to target the knee joint.

When the leg gave out, the golem collapsed, and both knights moved on without hesitation.

Fred's voice rang out…

"Don't waste your strength on the chest! If it doesn't fall, it'll rebuild!"

He was right. Several Rock Golems that had been shattered were already pulling themselves back together. Chunks of stone reassembled around pulsing cores, forming crude but functional bodies. They weren't as strong as before, but they were still dangerous!

Golems are golems after all. As long as they have Cores, they could still survive.

Fred raised his blade again and used his Sword's enchanted ability...

"Forcebreaker!"

His sword struck a regenerating golem square in the chest, piercing through the stone and into the core. The creature convulsed, then collapsed into rubble.

The knights saw this and their morale was boosted…

With Sir Fred in front, they have nothing to fear!

Soon, they eliminated most of the Rock Golems but they didn't have the time to rest.

A new tremor rolled through the valley.

This time, it wasn't the weight of stone, it was the rhythm of metal.

The Iron Golems had arrived.

They marched in perfect formation, their bodies made of steel and had traces of mana around them, protecting them from weaker spells.

Unlike the Rock Golems, they didn't move too slowly.

Their movements seemed a lot better than the Rock Golems…

Whoosh~

The first fireball from a mage appeared mid-air, and struck the nearest Iron Golem, but the coated mana on its body blocked it before impact!

The steel body wasn't even hit!

Then, the first arrow from Edward struck an Iron Golem's shoulder, but it bounced off harmlessly.

Bang! Bang!

Even the Seraphim rounds, so effective against stone, now struggled to penetrate. One bullet struck an Iron Golem's arm, leaving only a dent.

It penetrated the coated mana but it was not enough!

Another hit the chest and it dispersed without effect.

Mark lowered his weapon slightly as he helplessly looked at the Iron Golem.

"They're absorbing the mana. Explosive Mana Bullets doesn't work. This is terrible."

He then turned to his soldiers.

"Switch to joint targeting only. If you don't see a weak point, don't fire."

The knights braced themselves.

Fred raised his blade, but even he knew this would be different.

"Formation Delta! Tighten the line! We're not cutting through this one!"

The Iron Golems reached the barricades.

Their fists slammed into shields, sending knights flying.

"Aarrgh!"

The knights were troubled as the Iron Golems resisted flame, wind, and steel alike. Every strike from the defenders had to be precise, aimed at joints, necks, or its 'eye' to deal some damage… Anything less was wasted effort.

Torren tried again.

"Oh earth that anchors…

Earthen Grasp!"

The spell formed, but the Iron Golem shattered the stone hands with a single step.

"Well… I tried." Torren muttered.

Jiya reinforced the barrier.

"Oh current that shields the weak…

Gust Barrier!"

The wind held for a moment, but the Iron Golem pushed through, its weight and mana overwhelming the defense.

Arial watched from the center, his eyes fixed on the Silver Golem.

It hadn't stopped… It was still walking slowly behind the Iron Golems.

The Iron Golems were unlike anything they had faced so far.

Every spell that struck them was either absorbed or deflected.

Every blade that met their armor sparked and skidded off without leaving a mark.

Even the Seraphim rounds, were barely scratching the surface…

Mark fired his last round, aiming for the joint of a golem's leg. The bullet struck, but the impact was shallow.

The golem staggered for half a step, then resumed its march as if nothing had happened.

Perhaps, if there weren't hundreds of them… This was possible. However, that was not the case!

He lowered his weapon and glanced at the reload crystal on his belt.

It was not simply not gonna work. He could probably fight in close combat. The most he could do was destroy 3 or 5 of them, but he would be out of gas.

"This isn't good."

Fred was still holding the front, his blade glowing with layered enchantments. He struck an Iron Golem across the neck, and the steel cracked, but didn't break. The golem retaliated instantly, slamming its fist into Fred's shield and sending him sliding back several feet.

The knights around him were struggling. Their formation was tight, but the pressure was relentless.

One knight was knocked off his feet by a sweeping blow. Another tried to flank, only to be caught mid-step and thrown into the barricade.

"That's it. I'm out." Fred said as he signaled for his men to retreat.
