I looked around the place. There were four rooms lined up along the sides of the hallway. On the table in the hall there was an ornate ceramic vase, and on the walls there were huge oil paintings. I had never seen anything like this in the lower district before. Everything here resembled the houses of the middle district. It was obvious this place wasn't designed to be an orphanage. And surely it didn't look like a gang's headquarters either, but rather the house of a gang leader who loves to splurge.
Marco was dragging young Jevan from room to room excitedly.
"This is the boys' bedroom. That one's the girls' room, that's the study room, and that's the storage."
He led him up the long staircase to the second floor.
"This is Yara's bedroom."
"And where does that man Valeric sleep?"
"He sleeps in the hall on the couch."
He dragged him again, went back down to the ground floor, then stopped in front of the boys' room door and pushed it open.
"I wanted to introduce you to the others but they're sleeping."
As soon as he opened the door we were surprised to see a pale skinned, black haired boy standing right at the entrance. Young Jevan stepped back, and even I was stunned in my place. Marco alone stayed calm and gestured toward him, turning his head toward young Jevan.
"This is Kiran. He's a little strange but he's kind of friendly."
Kiran stepped toward young Jevan and extended his hand. Jevan extended his trembling hand too and shook it.
"Kiran."
"Jevan."
Kiran raised his head toward me, stared for a moment then returned his gaze to young Jevan and said:
"Pretty ghost."
Then he turned and went back inside. At that moment I realized young Jevan hadn't been imagining when he said he saw monsters floating around him. Since he could see me, maybe there really were creatures floating around him. Besides, staying near him gave me a strange feeling. I think there are some people who can see me. Weird, but I've been through stranger things, so no need to overthink it now.
Marco turned to young Jevan and said:
"Strange, he usually doesn't like any physical contact. Looks like he likes you."
Young Jevan didn't seem comfortable with that comment. We entered the room and Marco stood next to him, pointing at the bottom bunk.
"You can sleep here, I'll sleep on the couch outside."
On the top bunk Kiran was sitting reading a book. He lifted his eyes and waved to young Jevan or maybe to me? I didn't know, I was standing right beside him.
Young Jevan said as he looked at the top bunk:
"No need, I'll sleep on the couch outside."
"No, I insist."
"No need for all this generosity. I'm a new member, so I should sleep outside."
Before Marco could add another word, young Jevan bolted outside. He ran until he reached the couch in the hall and lay down on it. As soon as his head hit the pillow, he seemed to fall into a deep sleep.
As for me, I phased through the wall and went outside. The cold air brushed my face. Since I had absorbed my power more fully I had been able to move several meters away from young Jevan before I faded and returned to his side. I discovered this when he was locked in that cage.
That alone is enough to confirm that my time travel is linked to the Authority of Miracles. Yet it's clear young Jevan hasn't acquired that power yet. The question is: is he carrying a system piece containing this power without knowing it? Nothing about him or his clothes stands out if you ignore the color of his eyes. Except for that pendant hanging from his neck. Maybe it's a system piece?
As far as I know, there are two types of system pieces. The high quality ones, which allow you to break their seal and assimilate the power inside into your own body if you don't die during the process or during the sealing ritual.
And the counterfeit ones, which have a little of an Authority's power sealed into them by a true assimilator. These don't make you an Authority holder no matter what you do; you might not even be able to use them once before the power inside runs out.
That's why I assumed his pendant is a high quality piece. But how did it reach him? Things like that are hardly ever seen in the lower district. At least that's what the original Jevan wrote in his notebook. I think I'll have to ask him about it later.
I was about to go back inside. But a few steps in front of me Valeric was standing, staring at the place where I was. His hands were in his pockets, his expression as lazy as always.
I tried to ignore him and pass, but he stepped in front of me.
"You're the one who's been floating next to that kid."
I turned to Valeric. He was standing right in front of me, his hands in his pockets and his shoulders stiff.
I smiled as I adjusted my coat collar.
"Oh, looks like you can see me too?"
I straightened up and clasped my hands behind my back.
"And now, what is it you want from me, an autograph?"
His face went pale for a moment before returning to that usual laziness.
He clenched his teeth and asked:
"What are you doing next to that boy?"
"And why do you ask?"
His eyes narrowed further.
"You're not planning to hurt him, right?"
"And if I were, what would you do? Call a ghost hunter?"
Only then did Valeric take a fighting stance, his fingers tightening on the hilt of the sword hanging from his leather belt.
