“What the hell is this? You get in a fight with me and now you’ve got your eyes on some other guy, huh?”“I knew you’d come looking for me and throw a tantrum, so I hired someone out of sheer fucking terror, you bastard!”There couldn’t possibly be another guy on this earth with that face and that kind of build doing personal security—so that was definitely Gang Jaegyung. He was in a black suit, standing protectively in front of a woman with casts on her arm and leg, holding back a man whose face had gone bright red from rage.“Uncle, that’s him. That’s Gang Jaegyung.”“Looks like it.”Whoa, what is this—free entertainment? I actually get to see Gang Jaegyung on the job. I watched the scene unfold, intrigued. From what I could make out, the two had been dating. There was an argument, and somewhere in the middle of it, something happened—an accident, maybe—and the woman got injured. Pissed off, she reported him for assault. And when the guy showed up to talk things through, he found his girlfriend being guarded by some tall, well-built, annoyingly handsome guy, which just made him explode. The man was now getting aggressive, jabbing Gang Jaegyung in the shoulder with increasing force.“Hey, she’s my girlfriend. Who the fuck are you to stop me from even talking to her?”“Regardless of your relationship, approaching the client in this emotional state is inappropriate.”“What, you’ve got a thing for Yoonie or something, huh? Is that it, asshole?”The weird part was, no matter how hard the guy shoved his shoulder, Gang Jaegyung didn’t flinch or budge an inch. I’d thought he might actually be weaker than he looked—he’d gotten wrecked when he sparred with me—but seeing him stand his ground like that against a guy that size, I guess he wasn’t a bodyguard for nothing.Maybe that pissed the guy off even more—his jaw clenched as he balled up his fist.“…Oh?”I instinctively tried to move forward, but my uncle held me back. The man swung at Gang Jaegyung, and I heard people around us shriek. But Gang Jaegyung just stood there, like he knew exactly what was coming. He didn’t move. Didn’t dodge. Didn’t even blink. What the hell was he doing, just standing there like an idiot? And then—just in time—the hospital security team ran in and restrained the guy from behind like it was perfectly timed. Gang Jaegyung, unfazed, glanced at the man being dragged away, then turned to check on the woman behind him.“Wow, did you see that guy raise his hand…?”“She definitely got hurt because of him.”“And that bodyguard’s seriously hot.”The whispers started around us—people murmuring about the guy’s violent behavior. As I listened, the tension I’d been holding finally released, and I let out yet another sigh. God, how many sighs have I let out today?“Crazy bastard. Why the hell didn’t he dodge?”“If he dodged, the client might’ve taken the hit instead. It’s the first thing you learn in bodyguard training.”Someone else—another bodyguard—answered me when I grumbled under my breath. Wait, so bodyguards just… let themselves get hit if the client’s behind them? Whether it’s a punch, a knife, a bullet?I mean, yeah, it made sense. Still, the reality of it kind of hit different. I looked back at the scene.Gang Jaegyung was comforting the woman, who’d started crying, clearly overwhelmed. Then he seemed to be looking around for something. And then, by sheer accident, our eyes met.But just as I was debating whether I should wave or something, he turned away without the slightest acknowledgment and started talking to the woman again like he hadn’t seen me at all. A nurse approached; he chatted briefly with her before escorting the woman off somewhere. What the hell? Did he not see me? No way—we definitely locked eyes. And there’s no way Gang Jaegyung wouldn’t react if he saw me……Unless it wasn’t Gang Jaegyung?I started to doubt myself for a second, but no—the black hair, the build. I’d been hanging out with him for almost two months now. There’s no way I’d mistake someone else for him.“Younga, let’s head out,” my uncle said, tapping me on the shoulder.Still confused, I followed him toward the locker room.As I changed out of the hospital gown I’d worn for the check-up, I turned on my phone, just in case. But there were no messages from Gang Jaegyung. Maybe he was just too busy working. Or maybe he really hadn’t seen me…I rode the elevator down to the basement parking garage, feeling uneasy the whole way. Still no contact. I was half about to give up and ask him later when—[Gang Jaegyung]Of course. There’s no way you didn’t see me.My heart jumped as I answered the call.“Yeah.”—“Youngie, where are you? Don’t tell me you already left? Your voice is echoing—are you in the garage?”You even looked me in the eye and pretended you didn’t. Unbelievable.“Yeah, I’m in the garage.”—“Do you have time today? My shift’s almost over—can you wait just a bit? Let’s grab something to eat.”“Hm… how long?”—“Five minutes? Would that be okay?”“Sure. I’m parked in B… 03.”—“Wait for me in the car!”The moment I told him my parking spot, he practically squealed with excitement and hung up.Right. Like hell you didn’t see me.“You heard that, right, Uncle?”“Uh… yeah. You’re waiting in the car?”“Mm. When he didn’t react earlier, I thought maybe I got it wrong. Guess not.”As I slid into the back seat, my uncle turned on the AC and offered a defense on Gang Jaegyung’s behalf.“He probably couldn’t react ‘cause he’s on duty. Not supposed to show personal responses.”“Why?”Bodyguards are people too. Isn’t it normal to at least wave if you see someone you know?My uncle hesitated for a second before answering slowly.“I heard this from someone once… For people like bodyguards or detectives, who are easy to make enemies of—it’s not uncommon for psychos to lash out at their family or friends when they can’t get what they want. As revenge.”“…Oh.”I thought that kind of thing only happened in movies. I guess not.“So now they teach them: no matter who it is, don’t acknowledge them. Not even eye contact. Just in case they get someone else dragged into it.”“But that guy just got hauled away. He wouldn’t go after anyone.”“Even if nothing happens that one time, there are people who’ll stew on it for months, even years. Some end up stalking, obsessing, or worse. A lot of bodyguards eventually burn out and leave the job altogether.”“…”That put a whole different weight on my heart. I mean, my uncle’s job was peaceful—just guarding me while I laze around. But Gang Jaegyung…“…Hey, when I’ve been hanging out with Gang Jaegyung lately, you haven’t noticed anyone weird hanging around, right?”I asked seriously. My uncle burst out laughing.“If there was, I’d have already beat ‘em up!”“If you get sued, tell me. I’ll make sure you walk free.”“Aigo, thank you so much, young master,” he joked, chuckling. Then, still smiling, he rested one hand on the wheel and added calmly, like he was trying to reassure me.“And Youngie, I don’t think you need to worry about that guy.”“Why? Think he can handle himself?”“I wouldn’t know. I mean… he just seems really observant. If there were someone dangerous around, he’d have noticed by now and kept his distance from you.”…Really? Gang Jaegyung seems kind of oblivious to me…Just then, knock knock, came a sound from the window.“Younga. Youngaaa~.”He was slightly out of breath—probably from running.I quickly opened the door, and there was Gang Jaegyung, still in his suit, practically wagging his invisible tail as he got in.“Are you totally off duty now?”“Yes. I was supposed to be done already, but then the guy suddenly showed up… What about you? Why were you at the hospital? Are you okay?”He looked me up and down with such concern that I had to steady his head with both hands to stop it from bouncing around like an excited puppy.“Just a check-up.”“Oh, that’s good. So you’re not sick, right?”“They said I’m healthy. Even gained weight. Because someone keeps feeding me.”“Really? How much?!”He lit up like the sun. Then he went off, marveling about how fast I gained weight, nagging about how skinny I must’ve been before, saying we needed to try more restaurants, asking if I was craving anything, and even talking about putting me on a proper diet plan. My uncle joined in too, suggesting they launch a “Turn Young into a Pig” project.I’d long since given up trying to win against Gang Jaegyung when it came to food, so I just let their chatter become white noise. Then Gang Jaegyung, claiming he wanted to guess how much weight I’d gained, gently wrapped his arms around me. He’d been working and even ran over here, so he should’ve been sweaty, but there was no smell. If I focused really hard, I could just barely catch a faint scent of fabric softener. So it didn’t feel gross. And honestly, after a day this stressful… it felt kind of nice. Gang Jaegyung’s body wasn’t hot either—he was warm and dry and cool, all at once. Like the perfect summer blanket.I let him hug me as much as he wanted, and soon he was grinning and resting his head on my shoulder like a smug little mutt. They say huskies are too friendly to be good guard dogs… but Gang Jaegyung sure loved people, and yet he was damn good at his job too.I reached up and gently scratched under his chin. What a clever husky.
