Back when Anna and her entourage had left the city, Adam had come up with an ingenious method to manifest a summoning gate over large distances.
He would carve the spell model of the summoning spell into a strand of his hair. This itself was an incredibly difficult endevour. It required not only a deep understanding of runic magic, but also exceptional precision and the focus to etch runes onto something so delicate and minute.
Fortunately, Adam qualified in both aspects. He had deepened his understanding of runic magic by studying tomes given by the Brotherhood and also memories rich with the past expert's experience in this type of magic.
As for the latter, the Sphere of Resonance had several applications, limited only by his creativity. One such application was magnifying his vision to observe the most minute of details. Of course, such a thing required Adam to expend spiritual energy.
Moreover, his strand of hair could also be considered a material component. It was a body part of a Mana Vortex-level existence, after all. With that, the requirements for the model component and material component were satisfied.
All Adam needed to do was weave a set of hand seals that would activate the runes on the strands of his hair and create a portal that led directly to the Coil of Eternity.
As soon as Adam finished the physical component of the spell, several locations in the five districts of the city surged with unnatural energy fluctuations. The youth's lips curled into a grin, knowing that he had succeeded.
In the months leading to the Grand Magus Tournament, he had plucked several strands from his head and turned them into material components for the summoning spell. Then, he scattered these strands all across the city.
One by one, these places with the eratic energy fluctuations went through a drastic change. A small tear appeared in these places, growing bigger and bigger with each passing second.
Most of these portals appeared in the cobbled streets and alleys, but there were some that appeared inside buildings, in underground sewers, at the piers, and one even appeared outside the city walls.
The people around these portals, whether they were the armed forces of the city or the heinous cultists, were stunned by the sudden development. They all quickly retreated in fear, staying clear of the portals that were expanding by the moment.
A portal was a direct gateway to the spirit world, and this mystical dimension was full of mysteries and unknown horrors.
The cultists thought that this was the city forces' doing, while the latter thought this was another one of the cult's dastardly tricks. For a few moments, there was a sudden lull in the fighting as both sides regrouped, staring in stunned silence at the dozens of portals that had appeared throughout the city.
And then it happened…
Countless shadowy figures slithered from the depths of the portals, surging towards Ravenfell.
One of Ravenfell's Magi, who was standing near one of the portals with utter horror etched across his face, suddenly saw the true appearance of one of these mysterious creatures coming from within the portal.
And when he did, the horror on his face was instantly replaced by relief, then intense fighting spirit. He raised his fist to the skies and roared at the top of his lungs:
"It's the Dark King's army! The Serpents of War!"
As if to confirm his words, a dark, ominous sound rolled over the city. It was a cacophony of primal, predatory hunger. When it echoed through the ears of every living being in Ravenfell, an unprecedented fear gripped their hearts, as if something ancient and monstrous had turned its gaze upon them.
And then…
HIIIISSSSSS!!!
An ocean of serpents flooded through the portals, quickly drowning the cobblestone streets with scales and fangs. They eyed the living beings in the city with bloodlust and hostility. It didn't matter if they fought for Ravenfell or the Cult; to the serpents of the Coil, they were nothing but food.
And then, Adam's voice, magnified countless times by a spell, echoed in the minds of these serpents:
"Bare your fangs at the bastards of the Cult! Drown them in venom, and slaughter them all!"
As soon as those words left his mouth, he transmitted his intent to all the serpents through the magical bond they shared.
At once, the serpents who were glaring at the Ravenfell Magi with avarice and hunger, suddenly turned their heads towards the dark-robed cultists. This time, all the serpents displayed dark hostility towards the cultists, their eyes flickering with rapacious bloodthirst.
They had found their prey. And now… their hunt began!
At once, the scales of the battle had changed once again. This time, the brave warriors of the city found powerful, otherworldly allies to fight by their side. Their fighting intent tore through the skies, and they tapped into strength they didn't know they had.
The battle became chaotic and brutal with the involvement of the serpents of the Coil. There was no cadence to it, just pure, unfiltered slaughter. This was a decisive turning point for the city.
As for the one who summoned these serpents…
Before Adam's feet even touched the ground, he saw the space before him distort and suddenly there was the faint outline of a mystical door right before his very eyes.
It all happened too quickly for him to react. Felix suddenly appeared before him, his expression twisting into a dark scowl. He thrust his hand forward, and this time he did not miss.
The masked man tightly gripped Adam's neck, causing his face to instantly turn pale. The man squeezed his hand, then viciously slammed the youth onto the street below.
The ground cracked apart, and instantly a small crater formed from the terrible pressure. Once again, Adam felt the wind knocked out of his lungs. His eyes almost rolled over as he teetered on the verge of clarity and unconsciousness.
Felix grinned wickedly behind the mask. He was quite annoyed at not being able to succeed in taking down the slippery brat in his first few attempts. Moreover, the mysterious staff slamming into him had angered him even further.
Now, finally, he had caught the raven-haired youth. "Out of tricks, Magus?" he said.
He then leaned in closer, his tone dripping with malice as he added, "Foolish boy, did you think your little snakes could help you?"
Adam gritted his teeth, then let out a faint smile. "Those little snakes weren't meant to help me in the first place..."
A faint foreboding feeling gripped Felix's heart, but due to the fact that he was dealing with a Mana Vortex Magus, he didn't think much about it.
But that was his folly.
Adam's hands shot forward, violently grabbing the hand Felix was using to choke him against the ground.
"Come, bastard," he said, grinning like Merlin the Mad as the lotus pattern in his dark eyes shone with a blinding holy light.
"Let us take a trip to the spirit world."
And then…
The two of them vanished.
