As the sun slowly dipped below the horizon, it dyed the sky in myriad shades of violet, indigo, and orange.
The spring breeze blew from the east, traveling across the Galestine and gently blowing over the city of Ravenfell.
A city that once stood as one of the greatest metropolises in the Empire, housing one of the Four Pillars, now lay enveloped in fire and death.
The warm spring breeze did little to fix the bloody, fiery landscape. If anything, it appeared that even nature was seemingly afraid of the mortal affairs in the city.
The sky slowly darkened and the twin moons rose to the sky, their pale glow gradually illuminating the city below.
In the Upwtown Quarter, a district overrun by cultists, who had infiltrated from the underground sewer tunnels, it was utter chaos and madness in every nook and cranny.
The armed forces of the city did their best to defend against the intruders, and although it seemed that they were doing a good job at it, more and more cultists emerged from the sewer tunnels, gradually tipping the scales of battle against the defenders.
While the small skirmishes were taking place all over this once lavish, upper-class district, in the Constantine Estate, a battle of epic proportions between two giants was about to take place.
Located deep within the chest of the stone golem, Adam held a spherical instrument in his hands as he kept injecting a steady flow of mana into it. This sphere served as the core of the golem, and he was its energy source.
He had studied the stone golems he'd fought the last time he'd visited the Soaring River Secret Plane. Although he couldn't quite make the stone golem—borne from his dear home—act independently, this was still quite a desirable result.
Him serving as the fuel source of the golem and controling it from within allowed the stone constuct to be that much more devastating in its attacks.
Moreover, Adam also had a weapon that would significantly increase the attack power of the stone golem. All in all, it was quite beneficial for the golem to be controlled by him.
However, there were two primary drawbacks.
The first being the core acted as the center of gravity, holding the large boulders and the chunks of rock together and preventing them from falling to the ground.
As such, Adam's body was constantly being squeezed by the surrounding rocks. However, it wasn't much of a concern. His physique had been augmented several times, making the pain of being encased in stone more than tolerable.
The other major flaw was the control of the enormous construct. The stone golem was as big as the flesh golem—standing at twenty meters tall.
He figured that he'd only be able to deliver a few attacks at most before the golem fell apart.
Adam had no experience maneuvering such a large construct of magic, after all. Not to mention, the flesh golem wasn't the only opponent he had to face.
There was a group of dozen Mana Vortex Magi, and over a hundred Mana Liquefaction Magi in his estate already. More were entering through the breach as time passed.
Adam was outnumbered and outmatched.
But so what?
Wasn't that always the case?
The odds were always stacked against him. When had anything ever come easy?
Besides, he was sure that his anger would fuel him to brutally decimate the flesh golem standing before him. The grotesque monstrosity had destroyed his home, after all.
As the Staff of Calamity slammed into his palm, Adam gripped it tightly with his stony fingers. Then, he opened his giant maw and growled.
"Bastard, how dare you destroy my house?!"
With a thunderous roar that echoed across his estate, he lunged forward. Everyone, even the mindless flesh golem, was momentarily stunned by the sudden turn of events. They had never expected the lavish, two-story manor to… turn into a stone golem, after all.
Adam wouldn't miss this golden opportunity. In but a few moments, he arrived within fighting distance of the stunned flesh golem.
The Staff of Calamity flashed through the air, leaving behind a mesmerizing trail of black and gold, and viciously slammed into the flesh golem's shoulder.
In that instance when the staff connected, Adam gave his weapon a simple command in snaketongue:
"Expand."
The staff, already nearly twenty meters tall, now doubled in size. Its height surged and even its width expanded twofold.
But there was one other change…
Its weight!
Even in its shortened form, the Staff of Calamity's weight was enough to crush boulders with ease. Lord White had placed several restrictions on this great artifact, binding its power to Adam's growth. As he became stronger, he would be able to wield it more freely.
When he had received this artifact, he was but a Mana Liquefaction Magus. But now… he was already one entire rank above it.
The moment the Staff of Calamity connected, its size and weight grew twofold. Pushed by the vicious downward momentum of the weapon, the ground beneath the flesh golem cracked open, unable to withstand the weapon's immense mass, forming a small crater.
Adam's rocky hands instantly shattered from the recoil, chunks of stone and debris raining down like a shower of falling stars.
And then, there was the flesh golem itself…
It was as if a mountain had collapsed upon it, no, a star, crushing it under its unstoppable weight. The staff effortlessly tore through its shoulder, cleaved down its chest, ripped through its stomach and waist, and finally, with a thunderous boom, slammed into the earth.
In the blink of an eye, the Staff of Calamity had viciously obliterated the grotesque abomination, leaving behind only scraps of rotting flesh, shattered bone, and oozing toxic blood.
Along with the flesh golem, the stone golem's body, too, was slowly falling apart. The weight of the Staff of Calamity was too much for it to bear. Its hands had already crumbled into debris, and now the rest of the body was following.
Right at that moment, Adam willed the staff to shrink to its normal size and return to him. At the same time, he burst out from the chest of the rock golem, a furious look on his face.
In one hand, he accurately caught the returning Staff of Calamity, and in the other, he finished weaving the hand seal for his next spell.
Suddenly, the rock golem shuddered, its entire body—stone, marble, and timber alike—illuminated by brilliant, glowing magic circles.
And then…
