Chapter 107: The Deadly Forest

The soldiers began to fire cautiously at the roots, using their night vision and target-locking features to avoid missing their mark now that they knew what their target was. They began to free the soldiers from the clutches of the roots, but the roots, in turn, began to surround them from all sides, grabbing them one after another. The soldiers fired in all directions, taking them down one by one, but they kept coming. They grabbed the legs of two soldiers, one of whom was Mustafa, Omar's brother, who screamed in panic, his eyes wide with terror, "Omar, save me!"

The roots pulled him and the others quickly into the depths of the forest. They screamed for help. Three soldiers ran to follow them. Omar shouted, telling them to stay together and not to split up, but the soldiers began to disperse without a leader, firing randomly at everything that moved around them. Omar grabbed two soldiers and asked them to follow him to save his brother from this predicament. They agreed to his request, hoping to get out of here, but they did not know that he had gone to follow his brother and the missing soldiers. He ran quickly toward them, and the two soldiers followed him, firing at the roots that were chasing them like snakes slithering through the trees and grass. After a minute of running, Omar heard the sound of nearby gunfire and knew they were close. He quickened his pace until he found himself out of the forest, in a large circular clearing bordered by trees on all sides. In the middle of it, he saw the soldiers firing at something. He approached them quickly, then stopped and stared at the thing in front of him, his eyes wide with astonishment. Before him were three creatures that looked like moving trees. Their bodies were covered in wood, and they were a little taller than humans. Their bodies had the physiological structure of humans, but they were wooden and a dark brown color. Old age dominated their features. They had long green beards, and roots came out of their backs, flying, swaying, and dancing in the air as they pulled two soldiers and three others who were firing at them non-stop. The roots began to form in front of the strange creatures to protect them from the bullets. As soon as Mustafa and another soldier were under their feet, one of them raised its foot and stomped on the first soldier's face, shattering his helmet and head with the crushing blow. Even the suit could not protect him. Another creature grabbed Mustafa, who was screaming for help, and lifted him by his neck into the air. Then it squeezed his throat with immense force until it broke his neck. He fell, a lifeless corpse. The creature focused on the enemies in front of it again, then ordered the roots coming out of its back to pounce on them and grab them. Omar looked at what had happened and felt a terrible shock that uprooted him from the world of the living and the material. He was lost in another world from his shock and turmoil. Then he woke up from his trance and screamed with overwhelming anger and rage, his voice reaching the ears of everyone in the forest, "You baaaaastards! You will regret this!"

He ordered the two soldiers to fire at them, while he raised his weapon and charged, firing with them, his body burning with rage. They intensified their fire on the strange creatures, but they were protecting themselves with tree trunks. Omar approached the three soldiers and asked them to use heavy weapons on these creatures, as ordinary bullets would not affect them. The soldiers raised their hands, and a small cannon emerged from their wrists. They fired a volley of small but powerful rockets. They exploded in the creatures, and flames rose into the air from the force of the explosion. Smoke covered the area around the creatures. The soldiers stopped, waiting for the smoke to clear to see the results of their work. But the roots ambushed them from the middle of the smoke. They fired at them, and the roots fell one after another. Omar saw the creatures moving amidst the smoke and separating. He fired at one of them, but its roots began to move like a whip in the air, striking fiercely to block the shots, while some of them headed toward him. He, in turn, ran, firing at them, and began to jump and roll, avoiding them. But they were coming quickly and relentlessly. Omar took out a black device that resembled a TV remote control, but it had only one button. He pressed the button, and a bright yellow light emerged from it in the shape of a sword.

Omar grabbed the energy sword and began to cut the roots charging toward him as he ran toward the strange creature to get to it.

The roots began to fall one after another with the intense cutting power of the energy sword. Omar advanced, charging toward the creature, which was, in turn, running in a circle around them to surround them, while the soldiers were firing at it and the other two. When the soldiers saw Omar charging toward the creature in a rage, cutting its roots with ease, they drew their swords and began to do as he did. The creatures felt they were in danger and that their end was near. Omar got close to the creature and was on the verge of stabbing it, but he was surprised by something unexpected. A rock wall emerged from the ground to block the sword's blow. The sword pierced the rock wall, but the creature had fled to the right before the stab could hit it. Before it could get far enough away, it saw Omar running after it with determination, bent on killing it. And of course, the suit's speed was much faster than the creature's feet. Omar got very close to it. The creature began to wave its hand toward him, and three pointed rock pillars emerged from the ground, heading toward him. He dodged the first one, cut the second, and jumped over the third. He was now behind the creature by a few steps. Omar felt that his prey was within reach. He pushed his body and increased his speed, brandishing his sword forward in a stabbing position, a smile of victory on his face. While the other soldiers were cutting the roots charging toward them, they began to try to advance to eliminate these creatures, but fear prevented them from moving like Omar, who was driven by revenge and anger. Suddenly, the number of roots charging toward them decreased.

When Omar was about to stab the wooden creature, the creature turned, its face filled with terror. Despite its strange appearance, its fear was as clear as the moon at night. Before the sword could hit it, another creature jumped in front of it to take the stab in its place. The sword was plunged into its chest. It gasped loudly, and red blood came out of its mouth and from the place of the stab as well.

Omar stared at this strange sight, his eyes wide with astonishment. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. He said to himself, "Are these creatures intelligent? Do they understand the meaning of sacrifice and protecting others, or are they just strange, barbaric creatures that inhabit the strange forests they found themselves in?"

The creature that had escaped the stab looked at its friend's sacrifice. Fear and terror were evident on its face. It screamed with a strange sound that resembled a stormy wind shaking the trees violently. The stabbed one looked at it and motioned with its hand, as if to say, "Run." It stood on its feet, and Omar could have sworn he saw its tears falling. The creature began to flee toward the forest in the opposite direction from the soldiers. Omar remained stunned, not believing what he was seeing. He saw the stabbed creature fall to the ground, a motionless corpse. He woke up from his astonishment and decided to pursue the fleeing creature. He saw that the third remaining creature had been surrounded by the soldiers and was beginning to throw some rocks at them to give itself a chance to escape, but its attempt failed. The soldiers grabbed it and tied it up to take it as a hostage and present it to the state. It would be a major test subject, and they would be showered with promotions and praise for capturing such a strange creature.

And as Omar heard the soldiers congratulating him for killing this creature and getting them out of this predicament, he had already entered the forest and left them behind, running after the creature that was trying to flee. His comrades called for him to come back, but he did not listen to them and continued on his way, while the rest of the battalion reached the clearing to see what was happening after the roots that had been chasing and surrounding them from all directions had disappeared.
