The final line of defense is composed of a fortress and some terrain and buildings.
The defensive capability can be... almost said to be non-existent.
This place has been used as the starting point for various supply lines since the beginning of the holy war.
The demons have never attacked here, leading to weak defenses and a lack of defensive space.
Between the final line of defense and the Volcano Fortress are fields, orchards, and forests, from where almost all soldiers during the holy war get their food.
This place also has the largest population.
Most of the soldiers are assembled here, trained, and then distributed to various brigades, taken to their respective defense areas.
Kane and his team arrived at the only fortress on the final line of defense.
If not for the tall stone walls outside, it could be called a small city rather than a fortress.
Due to the evacuation of all civilians to here from the second line of defense,
the entire fortress is already packed with homeless civilians.
Kane, along with his teammates, stood on the city wall looking at the area inside the defense line.
Looking far past the horizon, you can see various wheat fields, farms, and orchards in the distance.
The splendid sunshine covers the land, warm and pleasant.
There is no taste of war destruction here, as if all are in peace, without demons rampaging outside.
Sakrem brought a few guards from the other end of the wall, walking toward Kane and his team.
"Commander Kane, let's not stay here, let's head directly to the Volcano Fortress."
Looking at Kane turning his head and looking at him in confusion.
Sakrem explained, "This final line of defense has no capability to defend. The command has been given, asking us to evacuate with these civilians directly to the rear of the Volcano Barrier."
It appears that the humans here were able to battle demons for hundreds of years with a reason, not by luck.
Once the best judgment is made, they execute decisively without indecision.
Initially, Kane thought these people would stubbornly defend one more time at the final line until they were beaten or had no choice but to retreat.
Unexpectedly, they were so decisive.
Though this is what Kane wanted to see.
Once everyone retreats to the Volcano Fortress, it will be the final decisive battle when the demons launch another massive attack.
Through their efforts, Kane and his team have preserved the surviving forces they could save.
Maintaining these troops now, with Kane and his team conducting a decapitation action, the chances of victory in the decisive battle are certainly not small.
After hearing Sakrem's words, Kane nodded and replied, "Then let's go."
Mounted on horses, these soldiers had already formed ranks, while civilians and various goods were heading towards the Volcano Fortress.
As for the civilians within the final line of defense, they began retreating upon receiving news of the massive attack from the second line of defense.
By now, most have been transferred to the rear of the Volcano Barrier.
Now, only Sakrem and these time-delaying soldiers and those who came to meet them remain.
Of course, along with those procrastinating civilians.
This long convoy stretches for several kilometers.
The soldiers walk back and forth within the entire convoy, maintaining order.
While Kane and his team fell behind the convoy, moving leisurely.
They also took the time to enjoy the surroundings.
An area untouched by demon rampage for a hundred years.
The vegetation, buildings, and environment are exceptionally well-preserved, and the air is free of any bloody or foul stench.
...
So they proceed, stopping and starting.
By noon the next day.
Kane and his team finally saw the distant volcano.
The volcano's top pierced the clouds, faintly visible with a blanket of white snow.
Even from this distance, traces of human construction could be seen at the foot of the mountain.
Approaching such a range, and being able to see watchtowers set at intervals along the way, each equipped with a squad of soldiers capable of both attack and defense.
At the top of the watchtower lies an unburned brazier, likely used to signal the distance of enemies to the rear.
Occasionally, elite armored cavalry squads could be seen patrolling around.
From the excellent condition of the soldiers' equipment, and the magic power reactions Kane saw on them.
Each squad of cavalry had a silver magic power reaction, making a squad capable of killing a demon.
The elite level of the Volcano Fortress' soldiers was far higher than Kane imagined.
Finally, Kane and his team witnessed the full view of the Volcano Fortress.
The entire volcano stood amid a low mountain range, with the fortress built around the face of the volcano.
To reach the rear, only the narrow roads on both sides of the volcano are accessible, however, the fortress construction has extended two lengths of walls outward, blocking the entire road.
If the demons want to rampage to the rear, they must capture the Volcano Fortress.
However, the demons' primary target is the volcano itself, where the Demon Commander is sealed.
Reportedly, the fortress built around the volcano is directly above the seal, meaning releasing the Demon Commander would require destroying the entire fortress.
Towering walls of ten-plus meters in height, densely covered with various engineering apparatus.
Just the soldiers stationed on the walls amounted to half of Kane's squad.
Below the wall, various traps have been dug, from the degree these traps were worked on, it seems they've just been excavated in recent days, with many soldiers and civilians still digging.
Civilians escorted to the central giant gate did not linger, but continued down narrow paths to the rear of the volcano.
The soldiers stayed within the Volcano Fortress.
Then, under the guidance of a scribe, these soldiers were divided into different camps according to their teams and brigades for rest.
Sakrem led Kane, his team, and the Saintess toward the central command center of the fortress.
The command center was established on the mountainside of the volcano.
The road leading to the command center was filled with stairways and upward slopes.
Along the way, Kane felt eyes hidden in shadows, along with humans hiding in various buildings.
Are the defenses so tight?
Kane was almost at the command center, when he discovered a towering cylindrical Mage Tower floating mid-air below the command center.
Due to its proximity to the ground, combined with surrounding structures, Kane had only noticed it now.
A shimmer flashed across the Mage Tower's top, Kane and his team could feel a magic power scanning over their bodies.
It seemed to be identifying their identities.
