Skill Extraction: Exploring Dungeons

Chapter 223 Battlefield

After Kane and his party left the fortress.

They headed towards the front-line camp several kilometers ahead, and on the way, they could see many soldiers and carts carrying supplies coming and going.

Many soldiers returning from the front line had wounds, with some even being carried by their comrades on stretchers.

After riding for a while on their warhorses, Kane and his team saw a military camp occupying a large area ahead.

The noisy sounds from the camp could be heard even by Kane and his team.

When Kane and his team arrived at the rear entrance of the camp, a few soldiers came forward to greet them.

A soldier dressed as a squad leader stood before Kane and saluted, "Commander Kane."

Kane nodded and then said, "Our squad will be joining the front-line combat in the near future. Please arrange a place for us and brief us on the situation here."

Upon hearing that Kane's squad would be participating in front-line combat, not only the squad leader but also the surrounding soldiers showed pleased expressions.

They were all aware of the prowess of Kane's squad.

Even if someone hadn't seen Kane and his team fight, they had heard from those who had.

How Kane and his team beat those demons, those nightmare-like monsters for them were nothing but mice to Kane and his team.

"Alright, no problem, please follow me."

With that said, the squad leader led Kane and his team into the camp.

The camp was filled with tents, spaced apart to prevent flames from spreading in case of a fire attack.

In the middle of the camp was a spacious area where many soldiers were training with weapons.

There were quite a few soldiers resting and chatting, and based on their attire, they seemed to belong to several different corps rather than one.

There were four different corps flags and one white flag with green stripes from the church.

Passing a tent, they saw a white tent with ornate green borders, giving off an aura that suggested it was probably the temporary chapel for the camp.

Around it, many soldiers were seen entering to pray, as soldiers' psychological issues in battle were also critically important, and those with faith seemed to fare better.

In war, it was especially easy to preach to soldiers and let them witness the divine light.

Watching the nuns and priests come and go, Kane withdrew his gaze.

The squad leader ahead continued to introduce the situation to Kane and his team.

"This camp is the largest in the entire defense line, guarding the main attack route of the demons. Due to their combative and reckless nature, demons are accustomed to amassing forces here."

"Aren't you worried they'll break through the line at other locations?"

"We've stationed soldiers at every critical point, and patrols monitor the entire line. No matter which direction the demons attack with full force, we can receive reports."

Then he pointed at figures in black tight attire within the camp and said, "These scouts relay various messages for us; they're highly professional and almost never let demons attack unnoticed."

He then stopped walking.

Before him lay an open area with several vacant tents.

"Mercenaries joining the holy crusade are usually stationed here since they're not soldiers of the legion and have their own combat methods.

Since we lately lack active offensive power, we're forced to defend passively. Commander Kane, you are free to act as we can't provide you any coordination now."

After leading Kane to the destination and explaining some precautions, the squad leader left, as this was the front-line camp where everyone had their duties.

However, before the squad leader had walked far, a deafening drumbeat rang from outside.

"The demons are attacking again; Commander Kane, do you want to join us?"

Of course, Kane and his team wouldn't refuse, as their purpose was to kill demons. Now encountering an attack was a perfect opportunity to witness the workings of front-line combat.

"Certainly, lead the way."

Then everyone jogged into the camp, while many soldiers donned armor and wielded weapons to charge out.

Afterwards, Kane and the soldiers who rushed out of the camp quickly organized themselves into their respective teams.

The camp was located on a high slope, while the demons generally attacked from below.

When Kane and his team arrived, many soldiers were already shooting arrows downward, and numerous bed crossbows fired massive crossbow arrows down.

The number of attacking demons below was actually not large; only a dozen or so were visibly silver-level.

Most of the attacking demons were power demons or heavy hammer demons.

The main force consisted of numerous skin-stripping monsters and various skinless, red-fleshed hounds and beasts.

These creatures and beasts had strong defense power, with penetrating arrows sticking out of their bodies, yet their movement was unaffected.

Soldiers launched wave after wave of arrow rain; when these creatures got close to charge uphill, two rows of soldiers with tower shields appeared behind, closing together behind shields, advancing slowly.

Behind them followed two rows of soldiers with long spears, who set the spears on the tower shields and thrust towards the charging hounds and skin-stripping monsters.

At this point, Kane and his team could see the mages in the dungeon, wearing light armor and holding magic staffs, pouring their magic downward, with ice arrows and fireballs smashing down.

Some bitten soldiers were swiftly dragged back by teammates and sent to the rear for treatment by priests.

With the sacrifice of forward cannon fodder, the dozen or so demons eventually charged up.

With eyes flashing bloodthirsty red lights and mouths roaring thunderously, it was time for them to unleash their bloodthirsty desires.

At this moment, the church's holy knights in fine armor stepped forth, tasked with blocking these extraordinarily strong individual demons.

Nearby bed crossbows and soldiers offered auxiliary support.

But their performance appeared extremely strained.

Kane and his team observed this situation and, keeping a certain distance apart, rushed at the demons ahead.

After all, many cannon fodder monsters assisted these demons.

Thus, Kane and his team maintained distance during their attack to better offer support.

And Meizike, riding Cotton Candy, flew overhead over Kane's battlefield, ready to provide healing and enhancement anytime.
