Age of Ascension: Forging an Immortal Realm from Nothing

chapter 6.2 - Artifacts! And The Fifth Wave Incoming! (2/4)

It was an alchemy furnace. It looked like an alchemy furnace. So why in the ever-loving hell was this thing calling itself a ‘Weapon Refinery’?Wu Chi had a whole damn roast queued up in his head, but he couldn't decide whether to let it rip. Then again, having a way to refine weapons wasn't half bad. It was a hell of a lot better than a regular old forge, anyway. He opened the "Refine Weapon" interface to check it out. It mainly had two functions.Option one was "Craft Artifact," which needed a blueprint and a pile of Void Crystals. Option two, the far more interesting one, was "Refine Equipment," which could turn his existing crap into magical crap, for the low, low price of Void Crystals!A damn shame. If I'd had a forge earlier, my longsword never would have broken.Mulling it over, Wu Chi whipped out his [Gauss Sniper Rifle]. As a piece of high-tech gear, it was a total diva. Without the right user manual, it was a clunky nightmare. Worse, it didn't have a scope, meaning his accuracy was so shit he'd be lucky to hit the broad side of a barn… from the inside. This was the perfect opportunity. He could refine it into an artifact and see what changed.Following the instructions, Wu Chi lifted the lid of the “alchemy furnace” and yeeted the sniper rifle inside. A notification prompt immediately appeared above the furnace.[Deposit 100 Void Crystals] / [Withdraw Item]That fucking expensive?Wu Chi’s wallet cried in protest, but he gritted his teeth and confirmed the payment.Almost instantly, flames ignited beneath the furnace. The stone statue of him lifted off the ground and began to float in lazy circles around the massive pot.About half an hour later, the flames died out, and the statue settled back into its original, motionless state.Stock -1!The furnace lid flew open, and a sniper rifle that now looked considerably more mystical shot out, circling Wu Chi once before stopping. It felt… a bit like one of those flying swords from the immortal cultivator stories!Holy crap, did my gun just gain sentience?Slightly freaked out but mostly excited, Wu Chi reached out, and the rifle settled into his hands as if it were born to be there.…Gauss Sniper RifleType: EquipmentLevel: 10Quality: RareAttributes: Spirit +5, Constitution +5Ammunition: Spirit Energy BulletsMagazine: 100/100 (Replenishes at 1 round/10 sec.)Effective Range: 0–2000 metersDescription: You’re a big boy now, Mr. Sniper Rifle. It’s about time you learned to kill enemies all on your own.…“A Rare-quality piece of gear! And its level jumped all the way to 10!”Wu Chi toyed with the rifle, a desperate itch to try it out growing inside him. Unfortunately, the day’s monster invasion was already over. He’d have to wait to see what this baby could do.Equipment strength was all about level and quality. Higher levels meant more power, but they also came with annoying user restrictions. Legendary divine artifacts, for example, might just suck your life force dry and turn you into a human raisin if you weren’t strong enough. Mythical treasures were total snobs and chose their own masters; if they didn't like your face, you couldn’t even touch them.Even your more basic stuff, like a {N•o•v•e•l•i•g•h•t} high-tier suit of armor, might have a strength requirement. And that made sense. You can’t wear a two-ton suit of power armor if you have the muscle mass of a wet noodle. You'd just fall over and be stuck wiggling on the ground like a turtle on its back. But this thing? Just a level 10 artifact. And thanks to his new, weird-ass refinery, it had zero requirements!“Sweet. Now I can camp inside my base and pop heads from a mile away!”Satisfied, Wu Chi opened his mouth like a pelican, and the entire rifle collapsed into a Tic Tac-sized dot of light that he swallowed. Gulp. One sniper rifle, safely stored in his gut.…Day five! 6:30 in the morning! With the new wooden walls enclosing the entire territory, plus the new defensive towers and the wild boar squad, the safety of his domain was pretty much assured.Suddenly, the sound of an explosion ripped through the early morning air from outside the gates!BOOM—!!!Wu Chi was jolted awake. He turned his head just as Lin Daiyu’s eyes fluttered open, a hazy fog of sleep still clouding her gaze.“Young master, is it the monster invasion?”The beautiful woman sat up, gathering the long hair that had splayed across her shoulders. She grabbed a jade hairpin from the pillow beside her and deftly twisted her hair into a bun. Two black strands escaped, falling to frame her ears, the stark contrast making her jade-like skin seem even more radiant. Her small ears, now on full display, had a cute, pinkish tint to them.“Probably!”Wu Chi cracked his neck. Opening his mouth, a speck of light shot out, rapidly expanding in the air to become the sniper rifle, which then fell neatly into his hands.“Let’s go! It’s the fifth wave, there’s bound to be something new!” Wu Chi said, quickly getting to his feet and heading out of the small cabin. They had both slept in their clothes, so getting ready wasn't a hassle.Lin Daiyu sat on the edge of the bed, slipped her pale, small feet into socks, put on her shoes, and hurried to follow him.Outside the territory’s wooden walls! From all four directions, dark figures stumbled out of the dense fog. Their stiff bodies swayed back and forth, moving just like the walking dead. There were tons of them! A quick glance was all Wu Chi needed to see that monsters were flooding in from all sides like a tidal wave. There had to be several hundred, at the very least!“Well shit, the difficulty’s ramped up,” Wu Chi’s face twitched. He pulled out the [Lens of Truth] and cast a few appraisal skills.…[Hoarfrost Rotting Corpse]Race: Undead / VoidLevel: 6Constitution: 11Spirit: 0.1Skill: [Corrosive Attack]Description: Death is your home now.…[Elite • Hoarfrost Rotting Corpse]Race: Undead / VoidLevel: 8Constitution: 25Spirit: 0.1Skills: [Corrosive Venom], [Frost Breath]Description: Die in the frost, bloom in the cold.
