Run Away If You Can

chapter 22

A soft knock drew my head around, and a man entered. It took ➤ NоvеⅠight ➤ (Read more on our source) me a few seconds to recognize the black-suited figure.“Ah—are you awake?”He spoke in the same businesslike tone he’d used the first time he escorted me to the mansion. My unblinking stare earned only a shrug, and he continued as if it didn’t matter.“You’ll feel better after some rest. Don’t worry about the medical bills or any other expenses—it was an accident, after all…”When I still said nothing, he seemed embarrassed and looked away.“I’m sorry—I didn’t realize you were a Beta. I assumed you were the invited Omega.”…Oh.That explained the sneers from the Gamma guards. It wasn’t my shabby car—it was that they’d thought me a male Omega. Gammas can’t smell pheromones, so of course they misidentified me. I later learned that inviting Alice—who handled the guest list—had sealed the misunderstanding perfectly.I felt too incredulous to reply. He glanced at my face once more. Really, he was only doing his job. Yes, he’d made a mistake, but it was forgivable. The one who’d truly sinned was Nathaniel Miller. Yet after what he’d done, I didn’t feel Mother Teresa–ish enough to say, “It’s all right.”Just as I prepared to snap at him, I noticed the bandage on my hand. I’d cut myself on the glass shard when I stabbed Nathaniel. A tingle of pain reminded me, and I glanced down to see an IV needle in my arm. Following the tube upward, I spotted the drip.He must have caught my gaze, because he said, “Oh—that’s to flush out the pheromones.”Pheromones? It wasn’t a drug?I frowned, and he elaborated, “You had so much excess pheromone on you… They absorb through the skin, too, and if any scent lingers you inhale it unconsciously.”I still wondered why they bothered with an injection for something that would fade on its own. Then I realized something odd and asked, “Who ordered it? Nathaniel Miller?”He nodded. Of course I’d been overwhelmed by pheromones because of him!I was too stunned to remove the needle, so I left it in place. After a moment, the man, seeing he had nothing more to say, turned to go. I called after him.“What happened to Miller?”If he’d died, it wouldn’t be so peaceful here.He offered almost the same calm expression. “He bled heavily, but luckily the artery missed. After emergency treatment, he’s resting now.”I couldn’t tell if that was good or bad.At least I’d escaped a murder charge. The fact I’d injured an Extreme Alpha could be ignored… He’d said not to worry about the accident anymore.“…The accident?” I echoed. He nodded. “I mean the settlement for the car crash.”Only then did I understand. He gave a quick nod and left the room for good.…Well, the purpose was served, at least.I lay back, blinking, as the IV drip at the edge of my vision ticked down, drop by drop.“My goodness, Prosecutor! What happened to you? Were you in a bar fight over the weekend?”The assistant prosecutor who met me on arrival turned ashen the moment he saw me. I raised one hand automatically, then dropped it again when he saw the white bandages.“I—had a bit of an incident.”I skirted the details, and he looked at me helplessly. No need to go into it—so I turned and headed for my office.“You have Judge Regan this afternoon, right? I’ll have everything ready.”I thanked him and went to open my door—“Ah, right there.”Before he could finish, I swung the door wide.A soft exhalation froze me in my tracks. A subtle, unwelcome scent drifted out. I lifted my eyes—and there he was, the last person I wanted to see, perched on the edge of my desk, one shapely hip slung over the side. For a moment I just stared at Nathaniel Miller. My body went rigid enough to forget breathing, my heart slamming wildly. Was this fear—or something else? He spoke in that low, bored voice.“Good morning, Prosecutor Chrissy Jin.”His tone settled around me like slow honey. He offered me the faintest of smiles—a mask, perhaps no real smile at all. I couldn’t read his expression, but his voice snapped my limbs out of their numbed state.“…How did you get in here?”I turned as if to close the door, catching the assistant prosecutor’s embarrassed face in the narrow gap. Realizing what he’d about to say, I nodded in reassurance. With a click the door shut, and the tension in the room doubled. Was it wise to be alone in a confined office with him? I tasted how his scent was spreading through the air. I felt it was a misstep—but I couldn’t bring myself to reopen the door. Instead, I pivoted and faced him.“You seem to enjoy barging into empty offices. Don’t you have your own desk? If you need one, I could ask our Chief Prosecutor for another cubicle.”My tone was as sharp as steel—and unexpectedly, he laughed. This time unmistakably—his lips curved, however slightly. I ignored him and strode to my desk, setting down my briefcase. I made sure the drawer containing condoms was between us. In that moment, I felt invincible.I stood squarely across the desk from him. As he leaned closer, his scent grew richer—and, despite myself, my hostility began to ebb.How irrational, that a man so cold as a razor should exude such sweetness.“You only spread pheromones everywhere because you lack any self-control, don’t you?” I couldn’t help but taunt. But Nathaniel Miller replied calmly, completely unperturbed.
