I Became a Monster in a T*ash Game

chapter 8

Guide of the SparkA dark room ringed by old iron furniture like a fortress. The tiny window was covered with black sheeting, so not a single ray of sunlight reached the cramped study. But that didn’t matter. Even without light, Joo-o could see everything clearly.A worn yet plush blanket. A mattress that smelled faintly of sweet flesh. A cozy pillow. Everything felt so satisfying that Joo-o began humming to himself.“Hmm… mmh, uhm.”He loved having a space all to himself. It might have looked like he’d been shoved into an unused room, but this meant Muhae had no intention of throwing him out. Since Joo-o had found the wolf, Muhae evidently recognized his value and accepted him.The thought made Joo-o’s heart flutter and thump with excitement.Muhae had even bought him clothes and shoes. He’d tracked down a Link Watch—something Joo-o had only seen in the game—and, as soon as they got home, had taken a mattress from his own bed to lay in the study. The bedding carried the faint scent of freshly laundered cloth and Muhae’s own smell. Burying his head in the mattress felt like climbing onto Muhae’s bike and wrapping his arms around him.“Haaaa.”At that moment, Joo-o recalled Muhae’s warmth: the pulse beneath Muhae’s jacket and the subtle shift of muscles…The feeling of another human’s heat after so long was so comforting it made his body melt. The living scent tickled his nose, filling the emptiness inside him.So even though they were in different rooms now, Joo-o didn’t mind. After a little while, Muhae would come into the study.Joo-o tapped his watch and replayed the day’s events.“Don’t come in—wait here. Don’t wander off.”They’d just left the familiar pawnshop where his father’s heirloom had been held. The moment Muhae cleared that massive debt, a digital chime rang in Joo-o’s ear.Beep-!WELCOME TO LA VIDA :) ~Year 15, Day 118~ [Quests] * Main Quest > Tutorial (Completed) > CHAPTER 1 ☞ Outsider of the City (Completed) - Gold-Birthing Wolf √ - 200,000-dil Heirloom √ ☞ Guide of the Spark (In Progress) - Intangible Legacy[Intangible Legacy]The heirloom brought from the pawnshop hides a secret as dangerous as its price. If you can unlock the storage device, you may obtain a new purpose in life.As the quest updated, Joo-o felt as if struck by lightning—an electrifying thrill of joy. Whether it was from completing another quest or sheer excitement, his mind suddenly sharpened.Faint memories of what lay ahead flickered through Joo-o’s mind: the hidden data in the heirloom, the burden Muhae would bear, the shocking truths tied to the Crystal Blue…He judged easily. By now Muhae would be wrestling with encrypted data and decide to search the study. Though the papers and devices had been burned with the will, some furniture remained intact.“…He’s up.”Just as he thought it, rustling cloth came from outside the door, then Muhae’s footsteps approached. Joo-o’s heart fluttered.Knock, knock. A brisk, confident knock shattered the silence, but Muhae didn’t wait—he flung the creaky wooden door open.A tall man with a stern expression stepped in. In the darkness, Joo-o turned and smiled at him.“Why are the lights off if you’re not sleeping?”“It’s fine. I can see well.”“You seeing well?”“Not yet.”“Then give me a moment—I need to find something.”Before Joo-o could nod, the room brightened suddenly. The neglected bulb still worked: metallic desks and empty cabinets reflected the pale light.“If you’re sleepy, you can go rest outside.”Muhae offered Joo-o his bed. Tempting, but Joo-o shook his head firmly. The game was unfolding before him. Whether Muhae liked it or not, Joo-o would sit on the mattress pile and watch.Clack, creak.Whirr–clack.The old furniture groaned and clicked as drawers opened and closed. Empty—no clues, not even dead insects—only a hollow void. After a long search, Muhae frowned and leaned on the desk, as if stumped. After several seconds of silence, he raised an eyebrow and regarded Joo-o.“…Did you hear anything weird just now?”“A whirr-clack sound.”“Anything else?”“Your breathing?”“Haah.”His voice rumbled low and deep, as if muttering, What did you expect?Muhae found no clues. Joo-o, from a gamer’s eye, could see the faint blue glimmer easily—but Muhae was an ordinary human, not a player. If only someone could hint to him like the game’s system did. Who better than one who remembered every scene?Joo-o watched him quietly, then spoke casually.“Is there someplace you keep important things?”In the memory flash after finding a clue, Muhae recalls a conversation with his father—when the player realizes his father planned and waited all this time.“…Important items.”As if remembering something, Muhae bent and opened the third drawer of the desk.He ran his hand through the empty interior, then paused as his eyes shone. He pressed hard, and something clicked. On his fingertip was pressed a red imprint.A simple emblem: a circle within a square, and a triangle within the circle.“Your watch—what’s wrong? No numbers.”Joo-o prompted again, and Muhae looked at his wrist. On the blank blue screen, he pressed his fingertip.Ding—tap! With a strange tone, the watch vibrated. At the same moment—Whoosh!A beam shot from the watch, and dozens of holographic windows sprang up in midair. These past few days, Muhae’s life felt like a yacht drifting in forbidden waters. The creaking, unstable sense aside, it had been pure chaos. The confusion peaked when he retrieved his father’s heirloom. The instant the round storage device brushed the Link Watch, all its functions froze. The little screen stayed vivid blue—no time, weather, or location displayed.Muhae sensed instinctively that the watch had slipped beyond the Central Data Authority’s control.“…Damn.”The Link Watch was a necessity—ID verification, banking, location tracking, communication. It managed everything inside and outside the Comfort Zone. For someone like Muhae, who couldn’t implant a chip, it was even more vital. Having it disabled was a serious problem. If it were merely broken, that’d be one thing—but it looked hacked. The government distributed these watches cheaply to monitor citizens. If control loss were discovered, someone with Muhae’s questionable status would face unbearable red tape.‘No one would sabotage a 200,000-dil gift…’Muhae recalled the will and heirloom he’d neatly packed under Boss Gil’s advice.Something ominous was at work here, ★ 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 ★ he felt. There had to be a way to restore it.Pacing his small home, codes and ciphers whirled through his mind. He’d learned much despite lacking formal schooling. His father and Dr. Jeong had taught him what he needed for life in the slums—and more.Tap. Toook. Toook. Toook… Tap. Tap.He tapped Morse code on the watch: his name, his father’s name—anything that came to mind.As expected, nothing changed. He tried drawing symbols on the small screen. Again, no response.“Hmm, mm…”Then, beyond the closed door, he heard a soft hum. Deep in thought, Muhae suddenly remembered someone else occupied this house. The study. He’d dismissed examining it—having already destroyed papers and devices per Boss Gil’s advice. Back then, Gil had opposed selling the furniture, calling it a sentimental remnant. Now he realized there might still be clues there.Knock, knock. He barely knocked before opening the door—and a strange fragrance greeted him. The dusty, iron-bound room smelled unusually sweet and comforting.A languid face, like a well-fed cat, turned to him—and Muhae found himself speaking.“Why are the lights off if you’re not sleeping?”In Joo-o’s red eyes, his pupils were huge dark orbs in the gloom. A soft smile curved his lips as if he delighted in some secret.“It’s fine. I can see.”Every blink sent his long lashes fluttering elegantly. For a moment the old study seemed a living painting.Again—a strange sensation washed over Muhae, a flutter in his chest like inhaling hot air.A peculiar tickle ran down his neck, as if he were stepping into a strange new world.“You sleeping now?”“No. Not yet.”The pleasant voice tinkled like a bell in his ear, and for some reason Muhae felt as though Joo-o stood there at the threshold of that world, waiting for him.
