Grand Voyage: I Start My Journey With A Ghost Ship!

chapter 99

Yang Yi had already mastered the use of his Third Eye.After confirming there was no danger on the deck, he put on his blindfold again. Only when he received the message confirming the ship’s capture did he remove it and head toward the cabin to inspect the interior.Just then, a streak of blue light shot out from the cabin—blindingly fast. Thanks to the enhanced vision of his Third Eye, Yang Yi caught a clear glimpse of it.It was a tiny ice shard, no more than two centimeters long, sprouting wings and legs. Inside it was embedded a severed human finger, glowing with a faint blue light. The sharp zzzzt-zzzzt sound it made came from the vibration of its wings—a frequency so high that it almost sounded like electrical current.Yang Yi had been on alert. He raised his pistol and fired a single shot—Bang! The bizarre, insect-like ice chunk burst into a cloud of frost, spreading a biting chill that thickened the frost on the nearby cabin door. The air itself groaned and cracked with ice.But that wasn’t the only one.Two more of those ice “bugs” rose from beneath the other side of the ship. They must have been dormant there, only waking when Yang Yi’s actions disturbed them. These two were different in size—one large, one small. The large one had a frozen eyeball inside it, while the smaller one contained a patch of skin. The moment they appeared, they shot toward Yang Yi at tremendous speed. His flintlock pistol was still cooling down, so he ditched the torch in his left hand and pulled out throwing knives, nailing both creatures in midair. He managed to kill them easily—because their true target wasn’t him, but the torch on the ground.Their cold aura instantly extinguished the flame. Then, two more flew out from the cabin. Yang Yi only had time to throw one knife—One bug exploded into frost, but the other was already right in front of him.Barely ten seconds had passed since his last shot!Yang Yi slashed out—his flintlock had already shifted into the form of the Sea Serpent’s Fang, stabbing the creature dead-on. The bug shattered instantly, bursting into another freezing mist.(The Wormspace Ring allowed him to switch weapons in an instant.)The thing was brittle, breaking apart like thin glass. But along with the shards came a surge of bone-chilling frost.Yang Yi’s right hand—and the Sea Serpent’s Fang with it—froze solid in an instant. Even his parka was coated in a rime of frost, and his cheeks went numb.If one of those things had latched onto him, he’d have ended up exactly like the ship’s original crew—frozen statues. At that moment, new information appeared before his eyes:【Name: Worm of the Ice Nest】【Description: A crystalline insect formed from the flesh and soul of Ice Nest followers. Drawn to heat and firelight, it freezes everything in its path to spread the Ice Nest’s gospel.Upon death, it emits a high-frequency pulse inaudible to humans, summoning all nearby Worms of the Ice Nest.】“Damn!”Yang Yi’s eyes widened. So these were what froze the ship solid. And by killing one, he had just called a swarm straight to him.He turned his gaze northeast—dots of faint blue light began to flicker in the distance. When motionless, these things looked just like chunks of ice, lying still on the glacier, completely indistinguishable. But now, awakened by the signal, they all began to rise and fly toward him.The nearest ones were less than a kilometer away.“Suna! Extinguish every campfire on the Nyxstar, now!”“What’s going on?”“Firelight attracts a deadly kind of insect!”He quickly forwarded the Ice Nest Worm’s description /N_o_v_e_l_i_g_h_t/ to her—and didn’t even bother retrieving his knives before running. But he stopped after just two steps. Those things flew too fast—running blindly would just get him caught instantly. He needed to do something—anything.Something like... setting this entire fuel-soaked ship ablaze.A torch alone would take minutes to melt through the frost and light a fire, but with the Sea Serpent’s Fang’s flame skill, that was a different story.Yang Yi bent his right fingers back, trying to free the weapon. His hand was frozen stiff—no longer under his control.Crack! He snapped one finger clean off. No blood, no pain. It wasn’t even like it was part of him anymore.Even his Spiderweb Gloves shattered into icy fragments.“Goddammit!”He didn’t have time to break each finger one by one. He was running out of time!So he raised his right arm high and smashed it down on the deck.Like shattering porcelain—the entire frozen hand exploded into fragments, scattering across the floor. Only the palm remained, cracked but mostly intact. He scooped up the Sea Serpent’s Fang, stowed the larger chunks of his shattered hand into his Worm Ring, and activated the weapon’s Flame Jet ability.A three-meter-wide cone of fire roared forth, igniting several nearby bonfires and setting the deck ablaze. The once-dead ship now burned once more—its hull wreathed in fire.Yang Yi didn’t look back. He leapt from the several-meter-high deck, tumbled across the glacier, and landed on his feet running. He didn’t spare a single thought for the supplies aboard the Courage.Every extra second he lingered meant death—or worse, becoming a living ice sculpture.“Hope this fire buys me some time.”He ran at full speed, squeezing every ounce of strength from his body, while keeping his Third Eye fixed on what was happening behind him.The worms were faster—far faster than he could run.The first of them reached the burning ship and dove straight into the flames. The fire flickered but held strong. One worm couldn’t snuff it out—but the horde behind it could. It was only a matter of time.Still, the fire had bought him precious seconds.Yang Yi closed his blindfold again and sprinted toward the Nyxstar, his mind racing for a plan. The worms wouldn’t let him go.Once the fire was out, he would be next—the only warm body around for miles. His thirty-something degree body temperature would be like a beacon amid the minus-thirty wasteland. He had to find a way to kill them all. Then, a spark of inspiration. They chased heat, but heat also killed them.Fire could melt and burn these living ice creatures. If he could lure them into a blaze—“Suna! Dismantle the Life Furnace and place it somewhere highly visible! These things will dive right into the flames—and when they do, their souls will ignite!”He sent the message immediately. The Ice Nest Worms were made from the flesh and souls of Ice Nest followers—meaning they were combustible.Once they entered the Life Furnace, their souls would fuel a raging soulfire—a blaze that burned the spirit itself.“Got it.”Suna’s reply was, as usual, short and to the point.Still, Yang Yi made sure to tell her to get off the ship after setting it up—lest she be caught in the inferno to come.
