Seven Beautiful Goddesses Want Me, But I Just Want My Revenge

Chapter 291: Next Step...

Lilith snorted, rolling her eyes. "Only you could think about profit right now."

Ava grinned, unbothered. "What can I say? It's my nature."

Adrian leaned back against a log, letting the warmth of the fire seep into his tired muscles. His gaze shifted to Hestia, who sat with her legs crossed, her head bobbing slightly as she fought to stay awake.

"Hestia," Adrian called softly. "You alright over there?"

Her marine-blue eyes blinked open, and she yawned lazily. "Mhm. Just... listening." A second later, her head lolled to the side, and soft snores escaped her lips.

The group exchanged amused glances. "Well, that didn't take long," Lilith said with a smirk.

As the night wore on, the conversation drifted toward the goddesses' pasts. Ava, ever the entertainer, leaned forward, her tone light and conspiratorial.

"You know," she began, "I wasn't always the stunning merchant you see before you. Once upon a time, I was... well, let's just say I had a few run-ins with the law."

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "Run-ins?"

Ava grinned sheepishly. "Okay, fine. I might have been a smuggler. But I swear, it was just to get the good stuffs up there. I mean they only have the not-so-good stuffs up there. Mostly."

Lilith snickered. "Mostly?"

"Hey, I'm reformed now," Ava said, holding up her hands. "Mostly."

The group chuckled, the tension from the earlier battle easing as they shared stories. Abyss returned from her patrol and quietly joined the circle, her violet eyes glowing faintly in the firelight. Adrian noticed her lingering near the edge of the group, her expression distant.

"What about you, Abyss?" he asked gently. "Do you have any stories to share?"

She hesitated, her fingers tracing the hilt of her blade. "Not much to tell," she said finally. "My past isn't... pleasant."

Lilith, for once, softened her usual sharp demeanor. "No one here had it easy," she said, her voice uncharacteristically gentle. "But you're here now. That's what matters."

Abyss gave a small nod, her expression relaxing slightly. "Thank you."

Hera, who had been watching the exchange quietly, added, "The Shadow Court takes. It consumes. But here, we give. We grow stronger together."

The fire crackled softly as the weight of her words settled over the group. Adrian glanced around, seeing the flicker of resolve in each of their faces. They were more than allies—they were a unit, bound by purpose and trust.

As the others began to settle for the night, Adrian found himself staring into the fire, lost in thought. Lilith approached, her usual smirk replaced by a rare look of sincerity.

"Thinking about tomorrow?" she asked, sitting beside him.

"Always," Adrian admitted. "But tonight... tonight was good. I needed this."

Lilith nodded, her gaze flickering to the sleeping figures around the fire. "We all did. Even gods need rest sometimes."

Adrian chuckled softly. "And here I thought you didn't believe in rest."

Lilith's smirk returned. "I make exceptions. Occasionally."

The silence between them was comfortable, the firelight casting warm shadows on their faces. As the stars continued to shine above, Adrian allowed himself a moment of peace, knowing the battles ahead would demand everything they had.

The fire burned low as the camp settled into quiet. Adrian stood, stretching before taking one last look at the group. Hestia was curled up near Ava, her snores soft and steady.

Hera sat against a tree, her golden spear resting beside her as she gazed at the sky. Abyss and Medea kept watch at the edge of the clearing, their eyes scanning the darkness.

Lilith lingered by the fire, her whip coiled neatly beside her. She caught Adrian's gaze and gave him a small nod. "Get some rest, Champion. Tomorrow's another fight."

Adrian smiled faintly. "Goodnight, Lilith."

************

The morning sun filtered through the canopy of trees, casting dappled light over the camp as the group prepared to return to Zarpha.

Adrian stood at the edge of the clearing, watching as they packed up. The scent of dew mixed with the lingering smell of ash from the previous night's battle.

"Is everyone ready?" he called out.

Ava emerged from a tent, her amber eyes gleaming. "Ready as ever. Though, I wouldn't mind staying a bit longer. The Shadow Court left some interesting trinkets behind." She held up a small pouch that jingled suspiciously.

"You're incorrigible," Hera said, shaking her head as she adjusted her golden spear.

Lilith smirked, her whip coiled lazily around her arm. "She's just resourceful. Can't fault her for that."

Medea stretched, her black flames flickering faintly around her fingertips. "Let's move before Ava decides to start her own bazaar out here."

The group laughed lightly. The mood was lighter, very different from the night before, when things were tense. Adrian couldn't help but feel a small surge of pride as he watched them.

They were more than just allies—they were becoming something closer to him.

By midmorning, the tall walls of Zarpha could be seen, their imposing shape standing firm against the horizon. Adrian's heart swelled with a mixture of relief and resolve as they passed through the gates.

The city was alive with activity—merchants peddling their wares, soldiers patrolling the streets, and the hum of a community striving to prepare for an uncertain future.

Queen Alannah was waiting for them in the courtyard, her dark mourning gown replaced by a practical yet elegant outfit that spoke of her readiness to lead. Her gaze softened as it landed on Adrian.

"Welcome back," she said warmly. "I trust the mission was a success?"

Adrian inclined his head. "The Shadow Court's advance team has been eliminated. They were probing our defenses, but we stopped them before they could report back."

Alannah's lips pressed into a thin line. "Good. But this is only the beginning."

Adrian nodded. "It always is."

***************

Days passed in a blur of preparations. The city's defenses were bolstered, the walls reinforced, and the soldiers trained with renewed vigor, led by Medea herself.

Adrian and the goddesses worked hard together, and Zarpha's military plans saw improvements in thier operations.

The turning point came one clear morning when the gates of Zarpha creaked open, and a small group of warriors entered the city. At their head was a familiar figure—Zack, his dark hair tousled and his armor gleaming in the sunlight.

Adrian was already on the battlements when he saw the young lad approach. A wide grin spread across his face as he descended the stone steps, meeting Zack halfway across the courtyard.

"Lord Adrian!" Zack called out.

Adrian clasped his hand firmly, pulling him into a brief but heartfelt embrace. "It's good to see you, Zack. Or should I say Lord Zack?"

Zack stepped back, his sharp eyes scanning the group gathered behind Adrian. His grin turned sly as he took in the goddesses, each radiating their unique presence.

"Well, well," Zack teased, crossing his arms. "I leave you alone for a while, and you collect an entourage of powerful women. I recognize Lady Lilith and Medea, the rest, nahh. Care to share your secret?"

Lilith snickered. "Oh, he's just irresistible."

Medea rolled her eyes. "Don't inflate his ego more than it already is."

Ava grinned, chiming in, "He's lucky we tolerate him."

Adrian shook his head, chuckling. "Ignore them. How's the journey been?"

"Long," Zack replied, his tone growing serious. "But we made it. These are some of my best warriors. They're ready to fight."

Adrian's gaze swept over the contingent, noting their disciplined stances and well-maintained gear. "We're grateful for the reinforcements. Zarpha needs every ally it can get."

The rest of the day was spent strategizing and integrating Zack's forces with Zarpha's soldiers. The training grounds buzzed with activity as warriors from both groups sparred, exchanged tactics, and learned to fight as one.

Adrian stood at the edge of the field, watching as Hera demonstrated a series of spear maneuvers to a group of soldiers.

Nearby, Zack observed, his arms crossed and a thoughtful expression on his face. "You've got quite the team," he remarked.

Adrian nodded. "They've been invaluable. But it's not just about power. It's about trust."

Zack glanced at him, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "And do they trust you?"

Adrian smirked. "They haven't killed me yet."

Zack laughed, clapping him on the shoulder. "High praise. But seriously, Adrian—this isn't just about Zarpha, is it? This is personal."

Adrian's expression hardened. "The Shadow Court took everything from me. I won't stop until they're gone."

Zack's gaze softened, but his tone was firm. "Then let's make sure they don't take anything more."

That evening, as the city settled into a rare moment of quiet, Adrian found himself standing on the palace balcony, overlooking Zarpha. The city's lights twinkled below, and he couldn't help but smile sadly at the sight.

Zack joined him, a bottle of wine in hand. "Figured you could use this," he said, offering the bottle.

Adrian took it with a small smile. "Thanks."

They stood in silence for a moment.

"You've changed," Zack said finally.

Adrian glanced at him. "How so?"

"You're... steadier. More focused than the last ime we met. The old you would hae gone head on to whereever the Shadow Court were/"

Adrian chuckled softly. "The old Adrian didn't have people depending on him."

Zack nodded, his expression thoughtful. "And now?"

"Now," Adrian said, his gaze distant, "I have a kingdom to protect, allies to stand beside, and revenge to take."

Zack raised his bottle in a silent toast. "To victory, then."

Adrian clinked his bottle against Zack's. "To victory."
