Silver Spoon Series

Volume 3: Interlude VI

Afilada was surprised by how easily they had won their Village Raid. She had left her support teams, the Corellians she had brought in after conquering the village, to guard her own village and entered the portal that had appeared right outside the front gate. There was supposed to be a secondary portal several kilometers away that could be used for a more clandestine assault, but she hadn't bothered with that.

The victory conditions called for either the death or capture of a quarter of the village's population, or the surrender or death of the village's owner. On the other side of the portal she had seen a small settlement with a rather pathetic wooden palisade around it. The wall consisted of logs sticking out of the ground about a hundred and thirty centimeters high. That was barely protection against smaller monsters, and Afilada and her team had little trouble simply jumping over it. Some unclassed villagers were standing by the gates with bows, but Sabi's magical shields easily blocked the weak shots that they managed.

The opposing team, a group of golemoids, was standing on the other side of the gate. They appeared to be surprised by the swiftness of her assault, but they recovered quickly. Afilada was about to give the order to attack when the leader stepped forward and requested single combat. The rest of her party smiled and backed up. She had been getting grouchy recently, and they thought a good fight would help settle her down.

Her opponent had a constitution class, but his strength and speed suggested he also had classes for those stats as well. He wasn't unskilled, but Afilada was on a whole different level. Not actually, she was still opal, but several of her classes were knocking on the door of diamond. In less than a minute, and with a flurry of strikes, she had removed the head of her opponent. Her class was particularly effective at delivering such clean cuts. And just like that, they had won the raid.

They now had twenty hours, an entire day, to collect whatever spoils they wanted. Sadly there was a limit to the number of prisoners they could take back with them, the tutorial insisted that they could only take ten percent of the population, minus any villagers they had killed. Fortunately the only death had been the leader. In an effort to maximize their gains, they had spent a few hours rounding up the entire population. They were prevented from taking the recruits, but she selected all of the beast people, and with the rest of their quota they chose those who were the strongest or had the most useful talents.

The only task remaining was to take as much food as they could find, as well as the other basic resources their defeated opponent had gathered. Afilada smiled, the Network was the greatest thing that ever happened to her. She could see her life now, ruling over a planet of war that pillaged its neighbors while training up the greatest warriors the universe had ever seen.
