Rafe read through the succinct ability description, not knowing exactly what to think. A new way to increase the amount of skills he had.
He remembered thinking that having too many skills might be a detriment, as he would have to level them up together with his class, and he was already struggling to get his class up. In that sense, the ability might be somewhat useless short-term. Long term though…
If he had a piece of equipment he had outgrown, why not turn the enchantment into a skill he could level up and maybe even upgrade to keep up with him? Still though, thinking about it logically, most abilities he had always had a caveat of some kind. There must be some kind of restriction he wasn't thinking of. He needed more cons to make sure he wasn't building this up too much in his head.
First off, he needed to return his body to pristine condition. And apparently the quest system had predicted this, if Rafe had guessed the function of the potions he'd received as a reward for the special quest completion right.
He needed one, so he stretched his hand out and he got one. For a moment though, his status screen changed.
"Huh? Inventory!" Rafe ordered. He couldn't help but smile.
He now had a screen cataloguing the things he'd put into his soul realm willy-nilly before the last fight. And he hadn't lost Granderel's inventory modification like he'd feared. There were some things there he hadn't put there before, or that he hadn't bothered to identify.
"Now that I think about it, I never did use status display on Noid's sword."
He poured a potion down his throat and let the medicinal taste wash down toward his stomach. As the lethargy and soul deep pain started to vacate his body, Rafe continued considering his options.
He didn't want to test his new ability on his sword, if he was being honest. He hadn't looked at the abilities Noid had infused it with, and he didn't think he was going to either. Now that he'd left the trial, the plan was to live a slow life. He needed to grind a bit, reach a few more class evolutions before he considered picking up his sword again.
He didn't expect to run into any battles he could not win with an alternative weapon. But then, he wasn't on Earth. He shrugged after considering a while. Thoughts for later. At the moment he needed to test his new ability, after which he'd need to finish going through his system notifications. Then he'd settle down and do something he dreaded more than most things. He'd have to think of a way forward.
Once his body finished healing, although he hadn't needed to refill his health pool as far as he knew, he got to his feet and stretched a little, preparing himself mentally and otherwise for the journey. Only, the potion seemed to still be working.
"Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have knocked the whole of it back?" he said questioningly.
It was his own fault. He trusted way too much. He trusted the system way too much, thinking it always had his best interests at heart. Or maybe it wasn't the system's fault. He needed to learn how things worked from people who actually knew them.
After a few moments though, he couldn't remember why he'd been feeling any trepidation. He felt good. Strong. His thinking was sharp. He could see clearly for the first time in a while. He looked up at the sky. An open, bright sky with nothing overhead.
He frowned. How was it bright with no sun in sight?
But that didn't matter to him. What mattered was testing his new ability. He needed to do that as soon as possible. He didn't know why that was the case, but he knew he needed to. He didn't have any equipment on him though.
He needed them. He needed something. Anything. It was a persistent itch. He needed to test this skill no matter what. Or he was probably going to…
He didn't know what he was going to do but it wouldn't be pretty.
And that was when he touched his wizard's battle robes.
'Ding' Ability Enchantment Eater activated.
Please choose a skill to create from the devoured enchantment.
Enchantments: Aura Augmentation (incorporates user's aura skill to provide light shielding).
Bulwark (a strong wall of pure mana to shield against attacks from a single direction).
Crystal lattice (An all encompassing mage's crystal lattice shield whose capabilities depend on the user's mana density).
self repair (strong).
self clean.
Emergency force barrier (Activates a force barrier to deflect physical damage when charged with mana).
Portable wardrobe (The equipment has a spacial magic enchantment that allows it to store clothing. The specs, materials and enchantments used on different clothes are interchangeable as well).
The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
The first few enchantments were the skills the Enchantress had woven into the robe itself. But the last two enchantments though. One was from the chain mail armour piece he'd received before. He hadn't been comfortable with it, so he had instead used the skills it had with his white robes before he'd ditched those robes for the better ones he'd received towards the end of the trial.
Not to mention there was a self repair and self clean enchantment he could turn into skills as well. Self clean made a little sense, but self repair? Rafe was finding it hard not to laugh. Would it turn into a self healing spell? Or was it made with fabrics in mind. This then would be the first true con of the ability he could see.
Some enchantments just did things he could not imagine as skills. In fact, he considered a sharpening enchantment, one of the most basic sword enchantments. How the hell would that work as a skill?
Anyway Rafe only had one enchantment in his sights all along. The portable wardrobe enchantment. Now that would make a skill he could be proud of.
Once the choice was made, Rafe felt essence gather in his robe, and then the Essence moved towards the gem in the centre of his chest. It was like a golden brooch he'd gotten used to seeing but hardly cared about anymore. And then the Essence dissipated and the gem broke into pieces and fell off from his robes.
His now completely mundane robes. Rafe's eyebrows rose in panic, but when he activated his soul sight he saw the new skill formation getting into place in his soul.
'Ding' You have created a new skill, armour echo (epic lvl 1). You can store pieces of clothing in a specialised spatial storage, sectioned off from your soul void. The specs, materials, and enchantments on these clothes are interchangeable as well.
At first he thought that was the end of it, but a bit of discomfort had him taking off his top to check his chest. And right there, above his black tattooed chest was the gem that was the physical representation of his new chest. It was smack dab on the centre of his chest. At least it wasn't exactly over his heart, he reflected. He forced himself not to duel on the cosmetic effects of his new lifestyle, instead forcing his mind back to the matter at hand. His new racial ability.
If he had to say anything about his new racial ability, the only disadvantage he could see was that it took all the enchantments from a piece of equipment, and only returned one skill. Not a very bad effect if he was out growing a certain piece of equipment, but it would still be a shame to destroy a rare piece of equipment that way.
Error! Error! Using an E grade racial ability as an F rank human may lead to consumption of life force. It is advised to use this ability once every twenty levels to avoid damage to life force.
Of course he had considered that fact as well. Unlocking the ability earlier had been bad, although he'd had the trial to help him back then. Using it earlier would be equally as bad as well. All the more reason this was one for the future, like his Mimic pseudo-class skill. Which now he remembered, had also been a huge influence on this whole sequence of events.
"Well then, I guess I should go through the rest of my gains?"
He was the only one present. For a second, he remembered he had left the Skyholm legacy trial and he probably wouldn't be seeing the gods again for a while. He shook his head firmly. Later. He would allow himself to wallow later.
You have completed a quest.
Objective: Climb the Enchantress' training tower.
Calculating rewards.
Rewards (For accepting) A map ability (already awarded).
(For completion): 1000 quest points, 10,000 credits, Dragon scale armour.
Sometimes, Rafe thought the system knew everything. Which it probably did, but did it know the future as well? He literally just needed something like this in this moment. It was already in his inventory from what he could see. And speaking of his inventory, he had things in there he didn't remember putting there before.
You have completed the first floor of the Enchantress' training tower.
Reward: Weapons (twin blade pair)
From the fang of a dragon, a fire aspected sword, and from the hip bone of a leviathan, an ice aspected sword.
Twin blades. A simple yet important reward. He needed that kind of weapon for one of his sword techniques, which he'd learned from his old friend Orlandir. Not that he would be using them any time soon.
You have completed the second floor of the Enchantress' training tower.
Reward: Essence core.
Contains non-renewable processed essence stores for emergencies. This is only until you find a substitute source of energy. Only three uses are approximated.
His second floor had been the aura training room. Remembering what had happened in the room, the reward seemed appropriate. A reward in case he ended up needing to upgrade a skill anytime before he had an alternative source of energy that wasn't his life force.
He wondered what source of energy the trial used.
You have completed the third floor of the Enchantress' training tower.
Reward: Still born phoenix egg.
The egg that did not hatch, even when bathed in the primordial flames. It has started to turn grey in places, signalling approaching death.
Rafe frowned at that last one. What was he going to use Sendriel's unhatched egg for.
He shrugged. He was just going through the notifications for now. He would consider everything else later.
You have completed the third floor of the Enchantress' training tower.
Reward: Portable fight simulator. (Pending name)
Record an image of an acquaintance if you interact with them long enough. With appropriate amounts of energy provided, you can simulate fights against them, among other things once the object ranks up.
Rafe didn't take it out. He would curse himself if he did. If he hadn't accidentally gotten himself drunk on a potion, he was sure he would have used this object to try and create a new skill.
Only, now that he was thinking about it, didn't the enchantment for this kind of thing have way too many functions? Wouldn't trying to turn it into a simple skill ruin something amazing? Maybe it was a good thing he had gotten himself drank by accident.
You have completed the last floor of the Enchantress' training dungeon.
Reward: Beginner's guide to soul nurturing techniques (a manual), multiple unaligned soul nurturing natural treasures and pills.
It has been determined your soul is in need of strengthening. Have no fear. You will be able to build a foundation to grow your soul further with this neutral training method and the accompanying natural treasures. Be ware this is a general method which will have very little effect past learning the very basics of soul nurturing. It is advisable to find a more comprehensive guide and better attuned natural treasures to proceed on this road.
Rafe only nodded at the last reward, knowing it would be important.
Then the next notification came, and Rafe couldn't help his mind blanking for a bit.
'Ding' You have entered the Deufont Dungeon.
