The tour started in a wooded glen of all places.
Syl had seen the testing of Kai's portals and known his intention immediately. She had then decided that, like any home, the domain needed an entrance for when any situation arose where presentation was important, such as when guests were invited in.
"Kai, how is your mana consumption? Will there be a limit on how long you can keep that portal open?" Thanric asked as he looked at his clipboard.
Kai checked, feeling at his mana pool; he was pleasantly surprised. "I think we're good; my mana is actually recovering at a slightly reduced rate."
"Good now, we should keep this portal open for safety and see if you can open a portal from here back out onto the ship. Atheos tells me someone called Lady Merribellium informed her you should be able to phase your portal so that they temporarily occupy an adjacent realm. That will make them next to undetectable. Failing that, manipulating the size down to the atomic level will be another good way to hide them," Thanric said absently as he scribbled something down.
"But for now, in such a case where there is an emergency and you somehow get stuck in here, either Syl or Alicia should be able to exit and drop one of your wands for you. Hopefully, you can use it as an anchor… might be better for you to make a test portal or two outside the ship first. Captain Bell will kill me if we tear a hole in her baby."
"Thanric, as much as you are a credit to your art, there are things I would like to show you. Once we are done, I am sure Kai will allow you to sate your curious nature with some more testing at that time," Syl said firmly.
Thanric grumbled something but he complied, pouting as he put the clipboard away.
"Great, now if you will follow me, we have a short walk to the centre of the domain," Syl said as she walked off down the wooded pathway, the tall trees looming up and over their heads.
Kai watched her go, and as he followed, he noticed a pulsing pink firefly drift lazily across the winding path ahead of them. At first there was only one of them, but as they made their way along the path, more and more flew out from the forest to greet them, circling around them in a display of pulsing pink light.
"Nice touch on the magical bugs; it really adds to the ambience," Kai said.
"Oh, that is nothing I did," Syl said as she continued down the pathway through the trees adorned with deep purple leaves.
"Wait, we have bugs in the domain?"
Syl turned back to him. "You thought the grass was normal, but bugs you draw an issue with?" She raised her arms and gestured enthusiastically to their surroundings. "Kai, we have a whole ecosystem in here. You should see the number of horned rabbits we have; I think they represent your horny thoughts, and they are multiplying like mad... Luckily a couple of kitsune found the domain and have been keeping the numbers down. Their kits are adorably cute, which is another bonus to having them around."
"As Atheos explained it to me. Your domain, while within you, also resides within a spirit realm. Healthy domains will naturally attract spiritual creatures that reside within the domain," Thanric said as he followed along.
"Is that safe? I mean, if the rabbits are my," ahem, he coughed into his fist, "thoughts, and these kitsune are eating them… Aren't they eating my soul... our souls?"
Syl shrugged, "It is, and it isn't. Spirits entering domains is common, and it is possible for a parasitic being or even one that is destructive in nature to come along. But those are often attracted to unhealthy, toxic or weakened domains, as they are much easier to consume."
The idea of something out on some spirit realm affecting him was not something he had been worried about, and he had to wonder if there was something he should be doing to defend himself.
He had to assume Syl was on top of it. Nevertheless, he made a mental note to ask her later.
Clearing the trees, they stepped out to gaze upon the familiar open fields of purple grass.
Off in the distance Kai could see Syl's lakeside manor, the property somehow elevated onto a small hillock with a retaining wall.
The decking now worked its way down from the side of the house to the lake, where it turned into a jetty that reached out over the expanse of water that seemed to have doubled in size since he last saw it, the once placid water now rippling with life below its surface.
Thanric gasped, "By all the spirits in the realm beyond… this is, this is nothing like what I imagined; it's like its own little world."
Syl was pleased with the reaction, and she said, "We have an unusually well-developed domain. Our paired souls combining to create something greater than we could ever hope to have separated. You see, the kitsune were looking for somewhere they could raise their young in safety; they chose us because we're actually still quite simple and there are no competing spirits that could pose a threat. And while it was possible they could have forced their way in, they asked permission to enter. Their promise to help cultivate, strengthen and enrich our combined territory, that is, alongside the protection they offer."
"When do you think I will start seeing life within my own domain?" Thanric asked, "Right now my domain is just a bit of white void. Seeing all this, I feel like I should be further along for my advanced years."
Syl grimaced, "As I said, our domain is unusually well developed. All I can say is a lot of what you are seeing has happened naturally over centuries… And there might be a bit of, as Kai calls it, system fuckery involved, if I am honest. But by all means, take some samples and try and transplant them. They may take it; they may not. Just don't touch the fauna; there is no telling what is part of the domain and is a spirit… Come to think of it, some of the newer trees have been moving about on their own."
"What can be introduced?" Arnella asked.
"Whatever we want, as long as it doesn't mess with the ecosystem. I myself am thinking about introducing orruk to the plains for the dragons to practise their hunting when they grow large enough… The problem is anything we introduce will gradually become part of the domain. A sort of pseudo-spiritual being. Unfortunately, they will struggle to survive once that happens if they are ever removed from the domain."
Alicia came to a halt. "How long does that take? I was in the domain for weeks and-"
"Alicia, you are fine. Everything you ate was real food. And it takes years; still, there might be a minuscule amount of Kai and me in you if you ate the plants. Did you eat any grass while I wasn't looking?"
Alicia visibly relaxed, and she jogged to catch up to Syl to take her arm.
"Alicia", Thanric called, "you may still want to reconsider your idea for a self-sustained village. While Lilly has responded kindly to my communications, asking people to live in here full-time... It could present unforeseen problems. Especially when it comes to their freedom of movement."
Kai had forgotten about that idea; the thought of everyone's daily ablutions piling up within him still didn't appeal to him.
"You contacted Lilly. How is she?" Alicia asked enthusiastically.
"She has a child now and is looking for stable employment. I've already made arrangements to get you two reacquainted."
Alicia couldnt help but grin at her master, nodding thankfully she bounced for a bit at the news as she eagerly told Syl all about her old friend.
When they crested another hill, Syl spoke up, "To those who have been here before. I raised the house; it gives a much better view of the immediate surroundings from the top. And with weather not being an issue here, I changed the roof to be more of an open entertaining area."
Kai had to admit it looked good from here, but he didn't really see the point in the trek through the open fields.
Thanric's head, however, was swivelling from left to right the whole time.
When Kai took the time to look about, he spotted a nest of rabbits off on one of the hills.
At first he thought they were small, the same size as most rabbits back on Earth, but the white balls of fluff were actually quite far away, and Syl informed them they would easily come up to his thigh if he were to stand next to one.
When he spotted a herd of pastel purple deer, their stag with its crystalline crown of antlers watching them from afar, he had to ask where the life had come from all of a sudden.
Syl explained that almost everything had been living near the perimeter. But with most of her work upending the outer areas, nearly everything ended up migrating closer to the centre, where her work was limited.
She was actually surprised he hadn't noticed any of the fauna sooner. Openly teasing him in front of everyone that he must have been distracted by Alicia and her each time he entered the domain.
Alicia's follow-up question asking if she finally had her own room with sufficient soundproofing didn't help matters.
Of course Syl couldn't miss the opportunity to stir things further with her reply that Alicia would not need a separate room with any soundproofing if only Kai could see what was on offer.
Kai could feel Thanric's eyes boring through the back of his skull and chose not to satisfy the teasing with a reply.
But worse than the teasing was their next move.
If he wasn't mistaken, he could have sworn that the two of them had changed the way they walked. The added power in their stride somehow took control of him and drew his attention down to linger as they confidently led the way.
Hearing Thanric give an exaggerated cough behind him, all three women chuckled as Kai searched for something else to focus on.
And come to think of it, it did not escape his attention that Syl had just implied her work didn't really affect the house in the centre of the domain and that Alicia could have easily continued to use the house instead of sleeping with him.
Seeing Alicia and Syl walking arm in arm ahead of him, Syl pointing out the new sights as they chatted to each other. He saw no point in complaining about it now. Especially when they were feeling feisty. He would only be giving them the attention they desired and, worse, the ammunition they needed.
He must have been lost in his thoughts because before he realised it, he was walking up a slope that circled around to the front of the manor.
Able to project into any point of the domain, he had never actually seen this side of the building, always either appearing in the home or out on the lakeside decking.
Leading them to the entrance, the door swung open to reveal a ball of bright white and pink-accented fur curiously looking their way.
"Sicily, do your parents know you're here?" Syl asked the little ball of fur.
It yipped enthusiastically.
"What have you been told about fibbing?"
It yipped sadly.
"Run along; you are allowed to come by, but please make sure your parents know you are here."
Yip.
"It doesn't matter that they know where you are at all times; permission is important. You don't want your brothers coming by whenever they want and ruining the place again, now do you?"
Yip yip, the little fox kit sauntered out the front door, its two tails flicking in the air as it stopped to sniff each of the newcomers before dashing off down the path.
"Was that even a language?" Thanric asked.
"No, but she opened her mind to me." Syl chuckled, "Her parents think she is a little prodigy. Compared to her brothers, who are a bit slow, I wouldn't blame them for thinking that. Still, they're cute and enjoy a good belly rub."
Syl popped her head through the door and looked about.
"The problem is that the two of them embrace their trickster nature more than their sister. If you notice anything out of place, such as a teacup being used as a plant pot, it is likely one of the brothers being mischievous; just pretend they caught you and send them off home."
"Just how long have they been living here?" Kai asked as he watched the ball of fluff bounce out into the field.
"A week, but time in here has been slippery since you started messing with it… On the whole, it's stable, but there are areas of the domain where time moves a bit faster and others where it slows down. Nothing to worry about right now. The kitsune actually thought you did it on purpose, and they took advantage to allow the kits to grow past their most vulnerable stage."
Thanric was scribbling away in a notebook.
"Yes… Thanric, add a note that your domain will reflect your skills and abilities as well as other things like your personality. For example, while you are here, you won't actually age past maturity because of my timeless nature."

The sage nodded along as Syl led them inside.
Kai noticed Arnella follow behind with a contemplative look on her face.
"What do you think?" Syl asked them as she gestured to the surroundings.
From what he could see, nothing had actually changed; the room was still open plan, with the living and dining area blending seamlessly into the kitchen.
The back wall made of glass still opened the room up to a view of the lake, the plains and the forest that held its shores and then out to the mountains with their ever-shifting aurora in the distance.
The only thing that caught his attention was a set of curious towers reaching high into the sky.
"Cosy," Thanric murmured, "is this reminiscent of your home world?"
"The wealthy, well-to-do, yes. Well beyond Kai's more common semi-detached home with its mismatched furniture and total lack of any feminine touch. He had a comfortable bed to retreat to. But even that was box-store basic."
"Box store basic? No, never mind," Alicia said.
Thanric walked around the room taking in all that he could; when he was done inspecting the oven, he asked, "This level of quality was achieved without the use of magic?"
"Though everything here was produced in the domain and works solely because I want it to. Yes, everything could and would have been produced on Kai's world without an ounce of magic," Syl explained.
"Fascinating... dare I say," he shut the hot water tap off, "your world was more advanced."
"You should see how they harnessed electricity; they had computing devices on the order of nanometres and were dabbling in the quantum realm. I dare say once they adapt to the system, they may be light years ahead of Alea. But that's not actually uncommon in the multiverse."
The sage gave Kai a look, "How studious were you? I mean in relation to the people of your world."
Kai chuckled awkwardly as he hesitated, trying to think of a way he could explain he had dropped out of college three times because of his mental health without sounding like a waste of space.
"Kai excels in things he finds interesting and lags in others. This is despite his efforts to focus; he is easily distracted. I would say he was above average but struggled because of it," Syl briefly summed it up for him. "Despite his omniglot skill, he will need a scribe if you ever want him to write out anything official."
"Ah, I know the type. All the promise, so long as you can keep them interested and suitably motivated," Thanric said sagely.
"Now if you follow me," Syl said as she moved to the stairs.
Alicia squeaked.
"Relax, things upstairs have been moved about; besides, you've not used the room in days."
The lot of them trudged up the stairs to a corridor that hadn't been here before.
As they approached the top, there was a door to the left and another to the right. "This is the new guest room," Syl said as he indicated the door on the left, her gaze lingering on Arnella for some reason.
"And this is the master," she said to Alicia as she tapped the door handle on the right.
Kai said nothing about the guest room, but it struck him as odd that Syl went out of her way to add another room he or Alicia could use to escape the other two should the need arise.
Before anyone could investigate either room, Syl continued down the corridor and led them out onto a verandah that split off to either side.
When Syl veered them off to the right and Kai saw the clear glass wall with sliding doors that led into a rather familiar, rather messed-up bedroom, he chuckled.
The glass frosted over the moment Syl heard him.
That just made him laugh that little bit louder, confusing Arnella and Thanric as they came around the corner behind him.
Syl kept them moving as she continued past the room and up another set of stairs to the open rooftop.
Only it wasn't really a roof, and the balcony didn't really cover it. Kai didn't really know what to call it. He guessed a rooftop garden kind of fit with all the planters decorating the place. He was pleased to see an actual barbecue grill in one corner and, if he wasn't imagining it, a diving board and water slide where some decking extended out over the side of the building.
As Syl was pointing out her feminine touches, Kai couldn't help but wander over to the lakeside of the house, and yes, you could dive right off the top of the house into the lake if you wanted to.
There was even an external set of stairs from the deck below that would allow you to run back up without having to go through the house itself.
He was looking at a set of paw prints that seemed to lead from a sandy bank of the lake, onto the decking, up the stairs and onto the slide when Arnella appeared at his side.
"Is this actually safe? Being so close to water feels… wrong."
That surprised Kai. "Why wouldn't it be safe?"
"Didn't I tell you leviathans live in the depths? A body of water this size would almost certainly hide something just waiting to pull you under."
"Arnella, can you not swim?"
She shook her head, "Never had a chance to go somewhere safe to learn. I come from common stock; my mother couldn't afford to take me to a pool to learn."
"Come to think of it, Alicia can't swim either."
"Most people can't… privilege of the wealthy; I was surprised Alicia couldn't use the palace pool or something like that."
Kai gestured out at the lake before them, "I'm going to guess it's safe; everything here should be at both Syl's and my mercy, and I doubt she would have put all this in if there was any risk to taking a swim."
Arnella looked down at the crystal-clear water below and shivered, the sandy bottom below looking closer than it actually was, a school of glittering fish dancing in the light as they passed by.
"You know, I grew up by something called the North Sea, one of the coldest and most inhospitable seas on my planet. Still, I spent hours on the beach as a child, swimming in its water like it was nothing once I had acclimatised. I loved it," he said, turning to Arnella, "If you want somewhere safe to learn to swim, the domain is open to you while we're onboard."
"You lived by the sea… Your world is so different from Alea. You must feel so lost."
"It's different here for certain. But it's not so bad as feeling lost; everyone here has been accommodating. And sure, my worldview has been rocked by everyone being so beautiful and looking so young." He chuckled, "You would think all the new races would have been shocking, but it's not. So far, people are just people.
Syl came up between them both, "While the view is impressive and the water below is safe, I am resisting the urge to push you both in."
Arnella looked horrified as she glanced between Syl and the water below.
"Oh, relax; you won't drown here. You're not even technically breathing air right now. Did you know that back on Earth there's an adage about being thrown into the deep end? Some people think it's the best way to learn." Syl turned to him, "I set everything up for Kai to teach me, but we still haven't found the time."
Kai turned back to see Alicia and Thanric waiting for them at the table they used down on the old deck. Syl had obviously moved it or duplicated it up here.
Raising his voice slightly, he asked, "Can anyone here actually swim?"
Only Thanric raised a hand.
He turned to Arnella, "Right, find time in tomorrow's schedule. We are all getting wet."
Syl grinned, "Brilliant, Alicia has a two-piece picked out, but I think Arnella might be more of a one-piece girl with her smaller frame."
"Hey, I have the curves for anything you got."
Syl looked the diminutive Gnomel woman up and down, "Find some time before the lake appointment. I'm sure we can make something that works for you. Now Kai, if you'll stop entertaining the new girl and come sit with us, Thanric has an update."
New girl? Kai was too afraid to ask what Syl meant out loud.
He prayed she was just teasing him.
"Relax, Kai, Arnella is only after one thing, and yes, you are a prime candidate, but not the prime candidate," Syl said as she took her seat next to him.
Arnella just gave him that same mischievous grin he had grown used to over the last few days.
While Alice gave him a pleasant smile that revealed nothing about her take on the matter.
Thanric was staring up at the sky above them and had thankfully missed the exchange or ignored it.
"Those are really your cores, all three of them?" Thanric asked as everyone sat down.
Three of them? Kai's head shot up.
"Yes, I was able to locate the connection between myself, Kai and Alicia. With her subconscious consent, I was able to create a representation of her core. It's cosmetic, but I like what it represents."
How he had not noticed the third core floating above them, he didn't know; looking at it now, a lot had actually changed; the sky had actually changed significantly.
"You see the stars? Those are actually domains adjacent to ours, those that are established enough to see. And it's safe to assume the brighter they are, the more divine they may actually be."
It was then that a shooting star traced its way across the starscape.
"Ah, that one could even be Atheos. She seems to be lingering, coming and going as she checks up on her investment."
Thanric nodded, "She comes and goes as she wills."
Two more shooting stars flashed in the sky above them.
"Seems like the gods present are making themselves known."
"Yes, Atheos has mentioned her pantheon is working on securing the area; apparently politics extend deeply into the divine realm. Worse, I'm told they work on a different time scale from mortals such as ourselves; things that take us days can take them centuries and so on and on and on… You get the point."
"You know, Thanric, you're getting an extraordinarily high level of attention. Most gods barely interact with their pet mortals."
"I believe I am but a conduit. That is not to say I do not benefit, and pet is a little reductive, don't you think?"
"Trust me, we're specks to them," Syl pointed up to the new core that now occupied the sky some distance away from the two regular cores Kai was used to seeing.
"You see that third core that Alicia has? That is actually Gift. Looking at him, he seems to have evolved. We should check on him once we are done."
Alicia looked off to the side for a moment, "He's okay. But it's unusually fuzzy…"
"When I checked on him this morning, he was singing to the other eggs," Kai interjected.
"Yes, he does that a lot," Syl said. "Now, Thanric, you had news."
Thanric looked up from his notebook.
Kai was unable to repress the chuckle at the obvious similarities between him and Alicia; it was just a question of how many of those similarities were because of their time as apprentice and master. Or if it was some weird genetic similarity.
But that brought up nature vs nurture, and he would have to wait to point out the similarities; otherwise, he might inadvertently let slip that Thanric was Alicia's father.
Thanric held up a finger as he frantically scribbled an end to his last note.
Once he was done, he put his pen down and addressed the table.
"You have three days," he said as he pointedly looked about the table, making a point to stop on each of them in turn. "The ship will be stopping at a nearby low-level dungeon to allow the Child of Adventure time to catch up. At the same time, the adventures we picked up will enter the dungeon. You will take this opportunity to depart for the meeting."
"I was wondering about our departure. Won't the crew be curious, the adventurers?" Kai asked.
Arnella sat forward, indicating she had input.
Thanric nodded.
"This is a non-issue; anyone making a bet had to agree to a short but carefully worded system contract. Everyone, including the two unassociated teams we took on, has placed one bet or another. No one on board can talk about you three once you leave the vessel. Standard silent operation stuff. Should they try to reveal anything, they will outright forget, and the contract will alert those safely in the know who and where the breach was."
"Clever," Syl said, amused.
Kai thought about it, and that actually explained why things on the ship had seemed so undisciplined.
Just to be sure, he asked, "Is this why the betting was so rampant? You were actively encouraging it... Does Bardrick know? Why not issue the system contract as an order?"
"He's done it before. And yes, we encouraged it. The crew were on light duty for weeks on end; they were bored. You coming aboard, the novelty of it, the rumours and the betting… it was great for morale," Arnella explained.
"Okay, so we have three days, so…" Kai said, choosing his next words carefully, "If there is something we want to do while on board, we need to do it by when exactly?"
"Sunday night," Thanric said. "You'll be departing Monday morning."
Thanric's answer only confused him more.
The days were familiar to him thanks to Omniglot… But a week on Alea was six days, so there was a day somewhere he needed to discount from his calculations… that and he didn't know what day it was to begin with.
"Saturday, there is no Saturday," Syl said as she gave him a suffering look.
Kai looked at her, all of a sudden horrified she was reading his mind.
"And no, I'm not reading your mind. But I can feel your confusion through our connection. Then there is the dumb look on your face. Honestly, Kai, just ask your friends; they won't think any less of you. They know you're an alien."
He coughed, "What day is it?
Thanric looked at him, a smile creeping across his face. "You know your personal system has a calendar; it should have adjusted to Alea, though it will fill in with seasonal information and stuff like the cycle of the moons based upon your personal knowledge and beliefs. Some people have theirs tracking the constellations, producing strangely applicable horoscopes that I've never been able to validate."
Kai nodded and focused, calling up a calendar; his mind pulsed with Earth's calendar before everything scrambling as he tried to see the local equivalent.
He waited.
But despite waiting, it never unscrambled in his mind.
So he called up the first blue system window he had produced in a long time and pushed it across to The Sage.
Thanric winced, "Ah, I see your problem… This is gibberish. I can see you have the right number of days, weeks and months, but you lack any reference point. Tomorrow morning we will fix this; it should be a quick lesson for the system to adjust."
Syl tsked, catching their attention.
"Just share the information from your own personal system."
Thanric looked at Syl, "You can do that…"
Syl shook her head in disappointment. "You know how to share status screens, skill info and things like that, but you haven't figured out how to share system-held data packs like calendars? I thought you had read Alicia's journal."
"I have, but this- it wasn't in there," Thanric said before pausing to do something with his personal system. "How something so obvious escaped me, I don't know."
"Most likely it's a non-issue; people are just naturally picking up the information in their youth. There has never been anyone like Kai where passing on the information would be helpful. My guess is you and everyone else just assumed the information was learnt."
When the blue window was passed back to him, it made a hell of a lot more sense to Kai. He even noticed a pulsing entry that read, Alicia's 41st birthday. And then there was another one that seemed to throb menacingly a couple of weeks back that read, Alicia (anniversary).
Settled that he now had a measure of time and a means to keep track of important events, he dismissed the window with a mental note to try and figure out Syl's birthday and their anniversary when he had time.
"Now, Thanric. Since we are speaking about passing things on," Syl said as she glanced to Kai and Alicia. "We have something to give you."
The man waved his hand dismissively. "You owe me nothing; everything I have done has been within the realms of my own interests."
Syl said nothing as she held out her hand.
The subtle, ever-present breeze whipped up and blustered around them.
Thanric's eyes went wide as he realised what was happening.
The sky above them flared, particles swirling down to collect in Syl's open palm. A crystal orb rapidly forming in just a moment.
Thanric watched the whole process eagerly, but as soon as he was staring at the glowing orb, he stood up and stepped away from the table.
"I'm sorry, I can't. I know the value of such a thing, and while my soul and heart scream to take it, my mind tells me no. I would be in your debt, a debt impossible to repay."
"Thanric-" Kai started to reassure the man, but Thanric cut him off.
"There is power in debts owed."
Syl rolled her eyes and flicked the orb his way. "Not among friends there isn't."
Thanric tried to dodge, but he was somehow pinned, held at Syl's mercy. Just as the orb had crashed into Alicia, it now crashed into her father.
A moment later, Thanric was back in his chair, cradling his head as he moaned on about skills beyond divine level.
"Oh hush, did the system notify you of debt owed or a karmic imbalance?" Syl chided him.
Thanric shook his head.
"Then act your age and enjoy your newfound clarity, and for the love of your spirits, stop forcing Alicia to translate all those dusty books. I'd like to hang out more."
Alicia coughed, "It's actually not so bad once you find the right books to dig into."
Syl ignored the two of them and turned to Arnella as she held out her hand again, "Your turn."
"Me?" She looked about. "I don't even know what that was."
"It's a simple utility skill. You're here; I'm feeling generous, so you're getting it while I have the juice."
"Juice?" Arnella asked.
Before Arnella knew what was happening, she was nursing a headache.
"Now, who wants to see some divine dragon eggs and one rather musical polymorph?"
It seemed sudden, but no one present could refuse the invitation to move on, not when Syl was in one of her pushy-for-your-benefit moods.
When they all got up, Kai couldn't help but notice Thanric's childlike grin.
Despite his protests, the man was clearly over the moon about receiving the Omniglot skill.
"Now, this location's secret. So hold onto something, just not anything here because…" Syl said as she closed her eyes in concentration.
Kai didn't know what Syl did, but one moment they were all standing around the table, and in the next they were standing around the nest she had made for the eggs.
Only it was eerily quiet.
Though the Gift's singing was a relatively new thing, he always thrummed in greeting when Kai came to check up on things.
But there was nothing.
Alicia, noting something was wrong, was the first to step up to the nest.
Coming up behind her, he watched as she reached out to touch Gift's egg, her hand pausing just an inch away from what remained. The black orb had vanished. Only the mesh that had once encircled the magical item remained.
But the mesh was still, silent and dull.
Alicia finally let her finger grace the skeletal mesh, and it collapsed, the delicate frame turning to dust.
