Demonic Skeleton God

Chapter 157: Larva

Flain thought. "It's more unlikely than likely. The system rarely gives me advantages for free, and when it does, it notifies me. I don't think it caused this."

"But I can ask it," he continued.

[Tip: No.]

'As I expected,' thought Flain.

"The system denies it," he informed Flor.

Flor was already on his way out. "I have to go now. Anyway, if you happen to encounter it again, it's better to run away and report its location to me. The Exorcist Guild pays quite well for that, because they don't have to kill it if it hasn't yet caused a disease, possessed someone important, or something like that. They can capture it and use it for training exorcists," he said before leaving.

Flain's eyes grew cold when the door closed behind him. During interactions, Flain deliberately behaves in a friendly and straightforward way with someone important. Since that creates a better mood and builds friendship between them, it can be used to gain advantages.

Of course, he can't act friendly with every important person, only with those who know him better and have the right character for it. If he were a general and captured an enemy army, treating them kindly would not build respect, and there would be far more escape attempts.

Flain redirected his cold eyes toward the hatch and descended into the cellar, where he sat down and leaned against the wall. In front of him appeared the system window of the Spell Master. Instead of choosing which stage of spell he wanted to create, Flain clicked on [upgrade] and selected Transparent Wings.

His eyes closed, and he appeared in Dimension X. Below him a chain reaction of dots for Transparent Wings had already been formed, but their connections were weak.

Flain had to reconnect all the dots from the beginning so their connection would be at Stage 2, or modify them if he wanted new abilities.

Upgrading was much easier than creating a spell, since you only had to connect the same dots — just with more difficulty — unlike creating a completely new spell, where you had to invent entirely new chain reactions.

Of course, if you wanted to completely remake a spell, like the system does when Flain upgrades a skill to a higher level on its own, it would be much harder. If you only wanted to add a few new mechanics — as Flain intended to do, since the concept of Transparent Wings was sufficient for him for now — it wouldn't be much harder than upgrading a spell to a higher level without new reactions.

Flain threw himself into the work; he should finish it within three weeks, before the academy.

Meanwhile, far away in the forest, on a tree branch soiled with bird droppings, a small fly egg began to shake.

The egg unfolded, and out of it came a shining white fly larva. The front of the larva faintly resembled a human face.

The larva began looking around.

'Hehehe, finally my time has come. On Earth I lived in filth as a virgin, playing video games all day, and my weight was greater than my height. When I was accidentally hit by a truck, I was happy. I knew it, I had reincarnated!'

The larva rejoiced inwardly, since it couldn't speak — but if it could, it would have shouted it across the whole forest.

'I'll become the strongest being and create the greatest harem, hehe,' it laughed.

[You have unlocked the system. Currently, you are in the larva stage. Consume meat, excrement, and rotting organic matter to become stronger.]

The larva looked at the blue system window in front of it with a smile.

'Hehehe, I've already unlocked the system too. It won't take long before I rule the world.'

The larva slowly began searching the branch. On the branch where it was, there were many droppings. The system told it to eat them to become stronger, but the larva hesitated.

'Shit? I have to eat shit? But I guess I have no choice.'

The larva slowly began burrowing into the droppings and consuming them. Its body was slow and fragile, so it had to be careful not to overeat too much.

After five days, all the droppings from the tree were gone, consumed by a single creature.

A pinky-sized larva rested on a leaf, digesting the last bits of droppings.

'I didn't expect that in my life shit would taste so good. Hehe, and I'm even getting stronger from it.'

The larva laughed and began crawling down the tree — and fell into the grass. Now was the right opportunity; it wanted to hunt something.

From the grass, it observed the area around the tree until it noticed something. From a hole beneath the tree root, something emerged. It was a black ant with green eyes, about the same size as the larva.

The larva crept closer, inching forward slowly. The ant stood before the hole. Black, with those green eyes. It was about the same size as the larva. Its eyes gleamed.

The ant moved first. A leap. Fast, fierce. Its jaws snapped shut right in front of the larva's body. The larva reacted instinctively — it wriggled and escaped. It felt stings along its sides. The ant turned, its legs digging firmly into the leaf.

The larva made a small step forward and fled. It was fragile. It wasn't afraid.

'Hehehe, this ant is nothing against me. Face the power of the future ruler!' the larva laughed.

The ant attacked again. This time downward. Its jaws caught the larva's side and clamped shut. The larva whimpered inwardly. It was a sharp pain. Strength draining. It felt itself twisting.

The ant tore at it from the leaf. The larva bit back sharply. Its mouth was small, but sharp. It managed one desperate bite into the ant's leg.

The ant broke away and scratched at it with claws. The larva tumbled to the ground.

It didn't want to move at all. Its strength was fading.

[You have entered a life-threatening situation.]

[You have unlocked the ability: Secretion — sticky fluid.]

The larva smeared the underside of its body. Sticky juices spilled onto the ant upon contact.

The ant tried to run away. The fluid caught its legs. It began to thrash. Its jaws stuck into the grass. The larva saw its chance. With the last remnants of strength, it climbed onto the ant's back and bit hard into its neck. The ant groaned. Then it went silent. The larva felt its warmth rising. Slowly its legs stopped moving...
