A Terrible Villain And Their Destiny

Chapter 187: A Change In The Field

Bryson stared as the ring itself exploded outwards as large chunks of earth flew into the sky. He recognized that a spell was cast, specifically an unearthing spell. But who would cast an unearthing spell, and one that was strong enough to send clumps of earth that weighed several tonnes several stories into the air?

Bryson then turned to his side and looked down at Anna, who had just finished casting such a spell. Evidently, she herself didn't expect to have created such a powerful spell considering that the explosion not only caused Morrigan to take flight but Patience as well.

The two now were well above the crowd as they tried to avoid being hit by a flying rock. Sable watching from the audience, was wondering how a small little duel had already gotten out of hand so quickly.

"Sorry." Anna apologised.

"Well, you did what was asked." Bryson said, "Though maybe next time pull it back a bit. Though I was wondering what took you so long to cast it."

"Sorry." Anna said again.

"You don't need to apologize." Bryson said watching Patience, "Because I think this is still to our benefit.

Patience now recovering quickly, moved herself onto a piece of earth that was flying up next to her. Using it as a launchpad, she sprang from it directly towards Morrigan. Who was still looking at everything, confused.

"Hey! You're still fighting!" Frans called out.

"Oh, shut up Snowfield." Bryson grumbled as Morrigan looked up to see Patience bounding towards her. Raising her sword up in time, their two blades clashed into one another and Morrigan gave an amused chuckle.

"Okay. I was wrong." Morrigan said, "This is much more fun. That Bryson picked some fun friends and you're a lot more than I expected."

"I haven't even started yet!" Patience shouted back as she continued her attack. At the same time gravity finally beat the initial velocity that the spell caused and things began to fall back down.

"I bet." Morrigan said as she used this change in momentum to cause the two to spin through the air. Patience still kept striking at her and Morrigan struggled to keep up with the rapid speed. Still even if Patience was a lot faster than her now, she was still green when it came to actual combat with others.

The years of avoiding fights caused her to even now rely on instincts alone to fight. Meaning that she wasn't used to analyzing her opponents nor was she used to thinking in the middle of a fight. Morrigan knew that Patience was fueled by some type of spell, it looked to be from Bryson.

She doubted that there weren't any drawbacks to the spell with the way Patience was fighting. With how urgently Patience was fighting her, she could guess that something would happen when the spell was ended. But how would it end was the question. Maybe if Bryson loses concentration? Even if that was true, it's not like she could hurt him in this situation. Then time? It would make sense. Would she need to wait for Bryson to run out of mana, or was it a preset time?

Well, either way, Morrigan needed to wait in order to find out. But that was fine, she was more than tough enough to take a few blows, and she was skilled enough to stop it at only a few blows. Besides, with this change of terrain, Morrigan can use it to her advantage.

Allowing herself to absorb a shot across her shoulder and with a wince, she threw a push kick into the midsection of Patience. With the kick, the two separated. Morrigan timed it well, as she made sure to angle herself in a position that allowed her to fly into a clump of earth. Quickly getting on top of it, she rode it down.

Patience was not as lucky, she soared past all available chunks of rock and began to fly downwards towards the ground. With a grin Morrigan wondered how bad a fall of this height would be for Patience. Though she didn't have time to enjoy the moment, as the platform she was using exploded beneath her feet.

"What?" She said glaring downwards to see Anna pointing at her, "Of course." She seethed. Anna was still there and still an annoyance. Then she saw Patience stop falling and seemed to be standing on an invisible platform.

"Frans, we're a team remember?" She called out.

"I thought you could handle her?" Frans said before seeing a death glare coming from her that shook him to his core, "Right." Frans grumbled as he turned to the other two, "Fire as many shots at the girl as possible, they don't need to be powerful, just keep Bryson distracted."

Not needing any more encouragement, they fired as many basic attack spells as they could. They were weak attacks, but that also meant that it really wasn't worth Bryson dispelling each one of them individually. More importantly, it also meant that he had to reinforce the barrier he created to absorb the hits.

Though that still left Anna free to fire at Morrigan, who now had to play batter as she swatted away the young spellcaster's attacks. Though Morrigan wasn't really aiming at anything with her swings, which meant that the spells were being deflected back randomly to the ground along with several tonnes of rock and earth.

Some neared the crowd, which caused some panicked screams from the less informed members as an invisible shield absorbed the impacts. Broken rubble safely slid down the barriers and harmlessly onto the ground. Defense systems for these stages, even as small as this one, were always active.

With so many spellcasters, it was expected for stray spells to head towards the crowd, and thankfully the school made sure that some defensive shields were implemented. Though the spells that were being deflected by Morrigan were not Bryson's concern as he saw Frans preparing a massive attack of his own.

No you don't. Bryson said as he flipped open the notebook again and quickly wrote down a counterspell. That thing was excessively huge, if the ring wasn't already in pieces, he would've expected that that fireball would do the trick. Halfway through finishing the counterspell, Bryson realized just how stupid it would be to cast a fireball spell like that. That wasn't Fran's plan.

"Damn it!" Bryson said as he stopped writing just as Frans unleashed the second spell he was preparing. The next thing Bryson saw was a cloud of dust that took the field.

"I can't see!" Anna shouted.

"I know!" Bryson grunted, "Morrigan is in a better position and now we can't help!"

"Hey Patience!" Morrigan shouted diving straight down towards Patience, "How strong do you think Bryson's barrier is?" She taunted.

"We won't need to find out!" Patience said raising her blade up, ready to swat her when she got in range.

"Oh I think we will." Morrigan said as Bryson crossed his arms and extended them out to either side to part the dust cloud. Frans who kept his head up the entire time used this exact moment to spot Morrigan and boost her momentum with a gust of wind.

Morrigan may not be traditionally faster than Patience right now. But now with Patience stuck in one place with nowhere to go and the added speed, she was not going to escape this. Patience still tried to swing her blade in time, but Morrigan raised her own sword up to clash with Patience.

Bryson before he could reinforce anything, could only watch as the invisible barrier he created broke apart as the two made contact. The two then hurtled towards the ground.

"What do we do?" Anna asked now unable to safely attack Morrigan without risk of harming Patience.

"Make sure that Morrigan lands first." Bryson said as he debated whether or not to try and slow their fall. They both should be able to survive the fall no matter what, it's just who would it be more beneficial for if they hit the ground at full impact? Would it completely incapacitate them?

Bryson wondered this as Frans and Lottie proceeded to cast simultaneous aeromancy magic to try and give their fighter the edge as the two fighters now grappled for position.

"There's no time." Bryson said as the next thing he saw was the two crashing into the ground.
