Witch, Fireball and the Evil God of Steam

Chapter 231: Duty Bound_4

"You know magic?"

"Not at all."

Cynthia admitted openly, "But I can teach them about magical creatures."

"And then develop them into your followers?"

Maka saw through Cynthia's little scheme at a glance. She was the most eager to develop followers among everyone, following the principle of 'the more, the merrier,' many hunters and even townspeople became her followers. Their age range was the widest, as Maka had heard of several elderly over seventy being coaxed by Cynthia to 'explore nature.'

This stemmed from Cynthia's philosophy.

She believed that one's power is limited. Even for her, it was impossible to travel every corner of this world and find every species that existed. That's why she needed help.

A lot, a lot of help, to help her explore the world and share their hunting experiences and knowledge.

"Not followers, more like a fellowship."

Cynthia argued confidently, "Just like your book club, except our interest is in adventure and hunting. It's a spiritual heritage of humanity since ancient times! We're exploring the origin of life. Do you know how humans came to be?"

...

Once again, Maka was left dumbfounded by the question.

Cynthia always managed to bring up wonderful viewpoints, often exploring issues that transcend reality.

For instance, during a fervent time of war, she would still discuss the origins of life like the philosophers of a bygone era.

"Created by the divine spirit."

Maka provided the answer that most aligned with a follower of the divine spirit.

"Wrong answer, based on the data I've gathered, although the divine spirits existed much longer than humans, humans are indeed a natural product of this world."

"You heretic, how dare you betray your faith!"

Maka was astounded, feeling that his position and Cynthia's had swapped.

This girl, as a former leader in faith of the divine spirits, should have fiercely opposed all who doubted 'the divine spirits created humans.'

"This is a natural law. You see, this is the benefit of adventuring. I'm currently preparing to write a book and wanted to hear your opinion."

"Go, go, go, I don't have time right now."

"No worries if you don't want to talk, you're not the only one who can write books anyway."

Cynthia stuck her tongue out at Maka and made a funny face, "I'll just ask someone else."

Maka wanted to say something more but could only feel a gentle breeze pass by, and the quirky girl in front of him vanished without a trace.

He was quite exasperated by Cynthia, but on another level…

The burdens weighing on him seemed to lighten a bit. He couldn't help but envy Cynthia's lifestyle, the way she stayed true to herself no matter what happened.

That was his ideal way of living.

Facing the teachers' requests and the pressure from his environment and position, being able to nonchalantly declare, "I don't care about this or that; today, I just want to go fishing."

But that was destined to be just a fantasy.

Even today's fishing was just a sneaky escape.

Now, his fishing rod had been confiscated by the teacher.

Meanwhile, a gentle breeze blew into Ethan's treehouse, bringing with it the moistness of the dew.

"Question!"

The breeze carried a lively voice. The visitor didn't knock but swung in through the ajar window, "If I were to write a book exploring the origin of life, what should I title it?"

"The Theory of Evolution."

Ethan replied without hesitation.

"Great, that's the name!"

The voice was filled with joy, "Here, this is for you."

In a moment of confusion, a small banner was handed to Ethan.

—"Congratulations to Ethan for shutting out Maka in the First Annual Fishing Competition and winning the championship!"
