The second we step out the door of the druid's den, the door slams shut behind us and I can hear multiple locks being locked.
"Alright Sammy, get in the carriage. There is a chance that we might be stopped on our way back, so there is something I need to show you."
We walk into the carriage where Hildi pulls up the seat, revealing a hidden compartment.
"If we get stopped, I want you to hide in here until I give you the clear to go out. There is a lock on the inside. It's important that you use it, just in case they search the carriage. Understood?"
"Yeah…"
She closes the compartment again, closes the curtains and says, "Good, now sit down. I'll get us going as soon as possible, that way we should get home before dusk."
"Okay…"
"Don't worry Sammy, it's going to be okay…" Hildi says brushing through my hair, before closing the door.
I then slump down on the seat as the carriage starts moving.
I feel like I'm about to throw up. There is so much I want to talk about but I know now is not the time. Like what's with this damn prophecy!? I'm going to kill Hildi? I'm at a crossroads of becoming either a warlord or a benevolent ruler? You can't even think that stuff up when you're high, it's that ridiculous. Also, what knight is going to save me? The only knights I know are Morgan and the knight captain and I don't see either being particularly eager to help me. I do hope Morgan is alright though…I don't think he ever came back after I kicked him out. I mean he's a dick but if it's the middle ages then it makes sense that he holds views like that. Maybe I have been too harsh on him…I hope he doesn't get sick. What do I do if he joins those cultists though? Apparently half of the knights are part of it and with the things Morgan has been saying, I wouldn't be too surprised if he joined them…Wait! What if he sells us out? I don't think he would do that but what if he got so pissed that he does? Maybe he did join them and is going to change his mind and save me and that's what the prophecy is about? That is of course IF the prophecy is not just some made up bullshit.
There is a rumbling in the carriage as we suddenly stop. I don't think we're at the mansion yet… Best to hide just in case. I open the hidden compartment and lay down inside, carefully closing and locking it. It's tight, uncomfortable and pitch black inside. I don't know why but I also feel kind of scared. I can then hear mumbling outside.
"Halt!" A raspy man's voice says, "Where are you going, mister?"
Mister? Who is he talking to?
Hidli speaks up and says, "Just getting the carriage back to where it belongs, Sir."
"And where is that?"
"Up there at the lot where the rich ladies live. They done up and just left in the middle of the night, so I'm bringing the carriage back."
"So you're employed by them?"
"No but I do know em quite well. Even sometimes eat at the same table as em. Good folks they are, so I'm helping them."
"Well, let me ask you then, are they good Christian women?"
"Well, they did go to the church just yesterday."
"Are they pious women?"
"I can't read minds, Sir. I do know that they went to church just yesterday though."
"Hmm…And you don't happen to transport these women right now are you?"
"You can take a look inside, Sir. You won't find anyone there."
"I will do just that then…"
I can hear the footsteps outside coming closer. I don't know why but I feel so scared right now. I don't think rationally speaking I'm in any real danger but somehow my heart is still pounding and my breathing is getting quicker.
The door then opens and I can hear heavy footsteps enter the carriage.
Shit, I'm shivering. Why am I shivering!? He's gonna hear me! And now my breathing is too loud. What do I do? What do I do!? Panicked, the only thing that comes to mind is to bite into my hand so that my pain distracts me from the fear.
"Alright, looks fine."
The footsteps then leave the carriage and I can hear the door close again. But for some reason my fear doesn't go away.
"Alright, old man, you can go on. God be with you."
"And with you, Sir."
The carriage starts moving again but Hildi hasn't given me a signal to get out yet.
I really want to get out of this box. It feels like I'm suffocating in here. With every bump on the road we pass, it feels like more and more air leaves the box. Then, after a bit of time, the carriage stops again.
Oh no, what is it this time!?
The carriage door opens again and I can hear footsteps going inside the carriage.
No, no, no, no. I'm scared. I'm gonna die. I'm gonna die.
"Sammy, you can come out now."
I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die…
"Sammy? You can come out now."
I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die…
"I'm breaking open the seat now, Sammy. Make sure to cover your eyes if you can."
Hildi then opens up the lid by force, causing multiple small splinters to rain down on me.
"By the four…Sammy, what's wrong?"
Hildi picks me up out of the box and quickly carries me inside.
"I don't know what's wrong Sammy but I'm here, okay? We're going to get through this!"
"M-m-mommy?"
"Yes, Sammy, I'm here. What's wrong?"
Gasping for air, I say, "I-I-I'm scared…I'm gonna die…I can't breath…"
"Shhh it's going to be okay, let's get downstairs so you can take that mask off."
Hildi then quickly carries me downstairs into the bath, lays me down on a bench and takes my mask off.
"W-what's going on with me?"
"I think you're having a panic attack honey. Try taking deep breaths okay, deeeeep breaths."
"O-okay."
Trying to follow her instructions, I try to take deep breaths but it takes me a few tries to do so. When I first try it, it just causes me to cough and panic further but Hildi keeps reassuring me until I get my breathing under control and the fear slowly subsides.
"I think…I feel better now."
"Can you walk or would you like me to carry you?"
"No…I can walk."
"Good, I'll open the escape tunnel then. Once we leave the city, it's only a bit of walking until we can go back home to the Feyrealm and rest. It's close to sundown, so once we're, out no one will follow us since they'll be preoccupied with the Silent Leaf."
Hildi then walks up to a wall and presses in different rocks in a web-like pattern. There is a bit of a rumbling sound and shortly after, a door opens, revealing a passageway behind it.
I then stand up and Hildi grabs my hand as we go down the hallway. There are multiple torches on the wall that automatically light with a green flame as we pass. We keep moving for what must be at least ten minutes before we come upon what looks like a complete cave in. It is only then that even Hildi loses her composure a little.
"No, no, no, no. I checked this pathway just two days ago, how could it be this bad!?"
She starts carrying away part of the rubble but after about fifteen minutes or so she gives up.
I then speak up and ask, "It's over isn't it?"
"Well…We might not be able to escape through here. But as long as we stake out here for the night we should be able to leave tomorrow."
"That's not what I meant…We are never going to get me out of this flesh prison. Not only that but we put ourselves in danger today just to learn we can't do it."
It looks like she's about to say something but instead just sits down next to me and puts her arm around me.
"You know Sammy, even if this path doesn't work, that doesn't mean that we have to give up. I don't mind traveling the Feyrealm with you to find an artifact or another way to help you."
"I know…And I don't want that. I don't want you to waste your life for me like that."
"It's not a waste as long as I do it for you, just think of all the memories we c-"
"Mommy…I want to make a contract with you."
"A contract? What kind of contract?"
"I want to make it so that if my biological parents force us to be apart, I'm going to kill myself. No matter how many times I revive until we can be together again."
"What!? Are you crazy!? Why would I ever-"
"I'm going to take the necklace off. Pavel said if I do that, they'll find a way to free me but I'd rather be dead than have to spend my life without you."
"I understand your resolve Sammy but I can't accept a pact like that. As your mother, I have to be a little selfish too and I can not bear the thought of something like that ever happening to you. But I will do everything in my power to make sure that we can stay together no matter what happens."
Leaning into her, I start to cry, "We will always be together, you hear me!? No matter what happens I'll make sure of it!"
Hildi then hugs me close and starts singing, ♫"I'm here for you my child, I'm there for you all times, even when the light of the sun goes down, I'll be there for you, even when the dunes crumble, I'll be there. Even when the last drop of water is gone, I'll be there. Even after the last drop of blood has left, I'll be there. I'll be there for you. Always..."♫
I then take off the locator necklace and put it in my little hidden bag.
"How long do you think it's going to take now until they come?"
"Well, last time it took them a short while to get there but we were also in the Feyrealm then, so maybe this time it will take a little longer. Maybe twice as long? But I don't know."
Hmm last time they showed up around thirty minutes after I took my necklace off so it will probably take an hour or two…
"Hey, mommy…"
"Yeah?"
"What do you think they'll be like?"
If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
She thinks for a second then gives me a smile, "Hmm, if they're anything like you they'll be great people."
"Is it weird that I don't want to meet them at all because you're my real mother but I'm still nervous and a little excited about meeting them?"
"No, that's completely normal."
"Even…If I kind of want them to like me. I know it's weird because I hope that they don't want me so we can stay together but in a way I also want them to like me."
"Sammy, no matter how many parents you have, whether it's one, two, three or more, of course you want them to like you. There is no need to feel guilty about it. I too want you to have a great relationship with your biological parents."
"I…Do you think they'll hate me because I'm reincarnated?"
"If they do, I'll give them a piece of my mind because that would make them horrible parents."
"And…And what if they hate me because of how damaged I am?"
"Then they never deserved to have a child in the first place."
"Will you still love me even if I start to like my biological parents?"
"Of course."
"That's good…"
"Hey mommy…"
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
"I love you too, Sammy."
We then just cuddle and wait for time to pass. I think about twenty minutes into our waiting, Hildi falls asleep. I don't blame her though, she's been through a lot too. Just carrying me for hours must have already been exhausting, not to mention the emotional pain she was in. Even I am really tired, despite being unconscious for most of the time Hildi was awake. So, I guess it's best to not wake her until my parents get here…She deserves some rest.
Another fifteen minutes or so of nothing happening passes until I can hear a banging sound coming from the end of the hallway.
Quickly, I wake up Hildi and say, "I think they're here."
"Hmm? What?" A little groggy Hildi opens her eyes before jolting up in a panic. "That's NOT your parents! Quick, help me excavate this tunnel, we might still have a chance if we-"
There is another loud bang as the sound of multiple bricks falling over is echoed throughout the hallway. Hildi then starts frantically trying to carry away debris while the sound of footsteps comes closer but the more she carries away the more dirt and dust comes back down from the ceiling.
It is then, that human knights slowly come into view, led by the blonde knight captain who is holding a rusty spear. Noticing them as well, Hildi pulls me behind her and gets into a combat stance.
"There is no use in fighting us, Miss Ixodida. If that even is your real name, demon. I am holding the spear of Longinus in my hand. Coated in the blood of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, it is even able to kill the immortal. Also, in case that you foolishly think you could somehow disarm me and run away, I'll have you know that even a small scratch from this weapon will never heal. If I even graze you in your attempt to do so you will eventually bleed to death."
"What do you want from us?"
"From you? Nothing, from that master you serve though…His holiness wants her to bear witness."
"Master? What are you talking about?"
I then hear the sound of slow steps, combined with the noise of wood hitting stone coming closer.
"Kekekeke, did you really think you could hide from me while your minions took care of me, demon? You might be able to run from the followers of God but you can not hide from His gaze," A familiar voice says as the pastor comes into view. He is almost completely naked, only wearing some sort of leaf shaped cloth over his junk. The leg I held onto, seems to have been amputated and replaced with a peg leg.
He then points at me and says, "Chain them, I want her to witness."
Hildi speaks up and says, "Look, I understand you see her as a threat because of what happened at the graveyard but she is not some grandmaster in charge of anyone. We are also not Demons, we are Fey and she is a literal child. As Fey we also can not lie, so you can trust my words. I have many skills and connections, if you let her go I can give you anything you need. Status, money, women, it doesn't matter. I can also help you find a safe way out of this town because I know how the assassins that are after you operate."
"Kekekeke… KEKEKEKEKE! You demons always try to scheme with your lies and pacts. There is nothing you could offer that I would want. As for your help in escaping, I have no need of it, as long as I take your master hostage it will buy me enough time. Knights, seize them!"
The blonde knight then points his rusty spear at Hildi, who at this point is still standing protectively in front of me, and demands, "Yield or die."
"What are we gonna do mommy? Do we fight?"
She then looks at me and back at the spear before giving me a sorrowful look and, while kneeling and putting her hands behind her head, says, "We yield."
Somewhat hesitantly, I follow her lead as the knights push us down to the ground and tie our hands and feet with rope. They pick us up by the hair and drag us upstairs while the blonde knight keeps his spear aimed at us at all times. They even drag us up the stairs like that, causing us to get multiple bruises. Then, when we can come up to the entrance hall, I start to cough. The air is thick with incense.
"Kekeke don't like that smell don't you, Demon? Don't worry, you won't have to bear it for long. Prostrate them!"
They kick us into the back of our legs and make us kneel. It looks like they have converted the entrance hall into a makeshift church, using one of our dining tables as an altar and hanging up a cross. What's even creepier is that the altar has human bones spread over it. Looking around, there are about a dozen men there who wear nothing besides that cloth leaf over their junk while the women present are all completely clothed to the point that they even have veils over their faces so you can not see any skin. They seem to be praying in the light coming from outside. Looking out of the windows, there is a golden translucent layer surrounding our property.
The pastor then walks up to the altar and says, "Now, finally, all pieces are ready". He points at one of the knights and says, "Tell the demons we have their master, that should halt their attacks for a bit."
"Yes your holiness!"
The pastor then picks up a black chalice decorated with bones and says "Now then, let us begin."
The followers start praying in unison together with the Pastor, "Lord, so great is our love for you, that even though we walk in a world where speaking your name can mean certain death, your faithful still speak it and speak it all the louder…"
As they start praying, a golden and black string forms around their necks that connects to the chalice.
"...Help us work for a world where all may speak their creeds and pray their prayers without fear of violence. Hear the prayers of those who abide with you in dangerous times and in dark valleys and who die with your name on their lips…"
They are now starting to rapidly age as the rope gets thicker and thicker, slowly flowing into the chalice while more rope is produced by those praying.
I loudly yell, "What are you doing you idiots!? You're killing yourself!" But I then quickly get the spear pointed at my throat.
"Do not disturb the martyrs."
The followers continue to pray and with their last breath chant, "Draw them quickly to your side where they might know eternal peace" and turn into lifeless mummies.
The pastor then, as the only one alive to finish the prayer, says "Amen" as his followers turn to dust, filling the cup he's holding.
"Let us all thank these martyrs who have gone to the kingdom of heaven before us so that we could revive our human father Adam. May they be embraced by the angels as they ascend."
"Amen!" The knights shout in unison.
"Now, by borrowing this dark artifact, we are able to resurrect our human father. Think of it as a necessary evil to let us back into the garden of Eden."
He then spills black liquid from inside the chalice over the bones on the altar. The liquid starts to slowly regrow new bones, organs, fibers and muscle as suddenly a wounded knight bursts through the front door, "Your holiness! Their attacks are relentless. Our barrier is short of breaking!"
"Damn it, we're so close. Knights! All of you mobilize and protect this place with your lifes. Captain you stay here, we need these hostages as leverage in case they break through before he is resurrected."
"Yes, your holiness!" the knights shout in unison as they charge outside.
I then feel something crawling up my ear. I try to shake it off but Hildi sternly says, "Don't move," which seems to relax the knight captain again as he was about to wind up to attack me with his spear.
I can feel something crawl inside of my ear forcing me to try REALLY hard to stay still and silent.
Then suddenly, I hear Hildi's voice, "If you can hear me take a deep breath."
Oh, I get it! That thing in my ear must be one of Hildi's ticks! Still disgusting but not nearly as bad.
I take a deep breath like Hildi told me to and promptly hear, "Good. Listen to me Sammy, our chance of survival just improved by a lot. I can get out of these restraints pretty easily. The problem is, I won't have the time to get out and free you from your restraints or pick you up without that knight being distracted. When the time comes, there will most likely be a very short window for us to act, so I need you to listen to me, okay? Take another deep breath if you understand."
I take another deep breath, "Good. Best case scenario, the Silent Leaf breaks through, allowing me to just pick you up and run. If that doesn't happen it means that I will have to stop Adam. I need you to be strong now Sammy, don't visibly react to what I'm about to tell you. If I need to stop Adam, I need you to run. There is a big chance I will die from wounds inflicted by the spear of Longinus but under no circumstances must you try to help me. Your parents are most likely about to show up any moment. You must survive this. If that scenario happens, I'm going to quickly transform into my guardian form to free myself from these restraints, then swap into my hybrid mode to remove your restraints. When that happens, you must run and not look back, no matter what you hear or see. Run straight out of the front door and try to either hide or run to a Silent Leaf member. Take a deep breath if you understand."
Even though I do understand what she's saying I can't take a deep breath. In fact I'm close to hyperventilating. It is taking all my mental power right now to not show how immensely distraught I am.
"I know this is hard to take in Sammy, but-"
"Kekekekeke! Finally! Our mortal father has been resurrected!!!"
"Hmm…What? Where am I?" Adam asks, as he stands up from the altar. He looks like a quite small but attractive and well toned middle eastern man.
Oh no. If he is resurrected, that means mommy will have to fight him and die. I- I can't let that happen. Mommy can't die. What do I do!?
"Adam, we your descendants have resurrected you so that you may use your power to keep the demons at bay forever, so that our heavenly father may once more let us enter Eden like we were always meant to be! We have already prepared the ritual circle, all we need now is your power as the one human closest to God to activate it!"
"So I died and got resurrected? Where are my wife and sons?"
"They are still dead. We could not find the remains of Abel and we would never resurrect that murderer and the whore who cast us out of Eden!"
WHAM!
Adam slaps the pastor so hard in the face that he falls over.
"Don't you dare call my wife a whore again. Neither of us had the knowledge of good and evil, so why would she have known that disobeying our father was wrong!? If father really didn't want us to eat that pomegranate then he shouldn't have put it next to us. And as for my sons…It's my fault. I instilled a deep respect into them for their grandfather. And even though both of them worked equally hard, father favored Abel because he sacrificed animals. How was Cain supposed to know that his grandfather didn't value labor and instead valued life sacrifices!? Most of Abel's livestock was fed by Cain's produce! I admit that what he did out of jealousy was wrong. But in the end, all he tried to do was please his grandfather who could have intervened at any point of the murder if he wanted to, which surely only empowered him more into thinking he was right!"
Still on the ground the Pastor cries out, "I'm so sorry to have offended you great grandfather, I simply was trying to-"
"Don't call me grandfather. Me and you don't share a bit of blood in common."
"B-but you are the father of all humanity! The one closest to the image of God!"
"What are you talking about? I might be the human closest to the image of YHWH but there were other humans that existed outside the garden. I only had two sons and one of them died. How would Cayne be able to father my grandchildren if we were the only humans alive?"
"I-I but the holy scriptures say that you are the father of all mankind."
He seems enraged, "Holy scriptures? Father of all mankind? So, my father never stopped his experiments then… He didn't learn one thing from his grandson's death…Let me tell you one thing. Those scriptures were most likely embellished. "
"So…I sacrificed all these people for nothing?"
"Sacrifice!? What are you talking about?"
"Well…To resurrect you I…We had to sacrifice many of our followers."
"You did what!? You sick fuck killed people to resurrect me!?" Adam screams before jumping on top of the pastor and starting to mercilessly beat him in the face causing the knight captain to turn around and ask, "Your holiness, should I intervene?"
"No…Thith ith my penance, we muft continue the plan."
Hildi, using this golden opportunity, uses the tick in my ear and yells, "Now!" and transforms into her guardian form.
It's as if time slows down as my mind starts to race. What can I do to save mommy!? She is going to without a doubt try to kill the knight and then move to kill Adam. The knight is wearing full body iron armor though, so she can't touch him or easily pierce his armor AND he holds a spear that even with a small wound will kill you in the long run and that death is going to be permanent. I don't have a good enough grasp on my powers to use them freely to assist her and I will just get in her way if I try to charge at him as well. The prophecy mentioned a knight who is going to save me but even though he seems conflicted right now about whether to help the pastor or Adam he is still not on our side regardless. It's too much of a gamble to try and talk it out with him. The only other thing the prophecy mentioned was me killing mommy but I would never- Wait… A cold shiver runs down my spine as Hildi unties my restraints. If I kill her…She'll come back. But if she goes to fight the knight, she'll be gone forever. She'll be gone for just two hundred years…Just two hundred years.
Meanwhile, Adam finishes up punching the pastor. There is no sign of movement or breathing coming from him, which means he's most likely dead.
"You there soldier."
"Yes, your holiness?"
"If I complete this ritual you will protect me, correct?"
"Yes of course!"
"Good." He then takes some of the blood of the pastor and starts drawing on the ritual circle, adding small alterations to it. "If I'm going to be the cause of a world without Fey or Demons, then it will be a world without the Divine and Death as well. Humanity has lived far too long under the schemes of beings more powerful than them. This is our world and you will no longer take it from us."
Hildi then finishes freeing me, while the knight captain is distracted, and through my ear tick tells me, "Run Sammy! Run and don't look back. I love you."
Hildi turns around waiting for me to start moving before she charges at the knight captain. But there is only one thing I can think of as I take out my dagger, '200 years' In an instant, all my negative emotions start surging out in the form of black goo that surrounds me completely, taking the form of a corrupted mix of the knight captain's and Boss' armor. My vision is then getting blurry and tainted in red as I jump on mommy's back from behind, wind up my dagger and aim for her neck.
Surprised by me jumping on her back, she desperately turns around and asks "What are you doing!?"
I try to answer her in the heat of the moment but all I can say is, "200 years".
I can feel my body going limp and my shadow armor disappearing as I feel myself piercing flesh and then falling to the ground. But when I look up, mommy is still standing, looking at me with a shocked face. Next to her, a 7ft tall Pavel pulling my dagger out of his left hand.
"I don't have much time, both the crystal and her mana are almost depleted. I'm going to kill this sorry excuse for a knight in one attack. You then pick up the spear and kill Adam before it is too late."
"Got it!"
The knight captain then speaks up and taunts, "You might talk big game Demon but I wield the spear of Longinus. You won't get past me that-"
The knight then spits up blood as Pavel, with immense speed, lunges forward with his rapier and pierces through his armor, right into his heart, causing the knight to fall on his knees and drop his spear. Pavel then transforms back into his usual small self as Hildi runs past him, picks up the spear and rams it right into the back of Adam before he can activate the circle. At the same time, multiple Silent Leaf agents storm the entrance and, quickly assessing the situation, destroy the ritual circle.
As Adam lies on the ground dying, his last words are, "Cain, Abel, Eve, forgive me" before drawing his last breath.
