Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 29: The Legend of Leray (Part 2)_2

The brief conversation ended. The audience in front of the TV couldn't snap out of it. They were trying hard to digest the shock of the interview.

Rationality guided their skepticism. But emotions, in the midst of an accelerating heartbeat, bred anticipation. Anticipation that perhaps everything said by the young man from Free Port on TV was true.

Has the Leray Federation truly given birth to an outstanding Mech Knight? This happiness that seemed to descend from the sky was dizzying.

In the laboratory.

Boswell stopped his work, looked at the old-fashioned television beside him, and asked, "Fatty, was that piece of network combat footage that just aired something you played?"

Fatty was fiddling with the engine, replying matter-of-factly, "Yeah. What's up?"

Boswell was speechless for a moment, then praised, "I didn't expect your skills to be so high. Combat at the front line really hones one's abilities!"

Fatty still kept his head down, tinkering with the engine, "That's not it. I just modified the program a bit through our program's backdoor; even if they call a War God, they can't beat me."

Boswell was taken aback, then immediately got angry, grabbing a wrench, "You dare to set a program backdoor in a simulation network design?... Stay put, don't you run!"

"... Crash bang... You're cheating even when sparring with students!"

The flickering screen of the old-fashioned television showed Helen's captivating smile.

After Cosmo left, Helen smiled at the camera like that for a full ten seconds. She seemed to be brewing something. People could even see her taking a deep breath.

"Mecha has been a part of our lives for thousands of years already. It emerged from war and became humanity's best partner in conquering the universe and one precarious immigrant planet after another." Helen's voice was sweet and pleasant, as refreshing as a spring breeze.

"Just like flying cars, mecha has become a part of our daily life. Whether used for transportation, manufacturing, exploration, security, warfare, or competitive entertainment, it's so fascinating. Living in such a world, becoming a skilled Mech Knight is almost every child's dream."

Accompanied by Helen's narration, the screen began to play images introducing the development of Leray Mecha and scenes of large-scale mecha battles during the War for National Protection.

"And it is well known that, for various reasons, Leray's mecha prowess has always been at the lower middle level compared to other nations. Our hardware and software levels are far below those nations with deep mecha roots, and even our neighbor Gazalin was once ahead of us."

Helen's words struck the hearts of the audience one word at a time, and at this moment, a profound sigh arose from the crowd.

"This lead is not just in mecha hardware. Most importantly, Gazalin historically produced three Level 9 Mecha Warriors, while we have produced none. Among them, the most famous is the notorious Mythical Army's Legion Commander Reinhardt.

This is an era ruled by mecha, where a top-notch Mecha Warrior is a symbol of a nation's comprehensive mecha strength, capable of earning the respect of the world."

The screen started displaying one photo after another.

The main characters in these photos were all famous, well-known figures in the mecha world. They were towering mountains that the Leray people could only look up to. They held high status and prestige in the world, wherever they went, they were the focus of all eyes.

Helen's voice continued: "Before this, we could only offer our respect to those legends not belonging to Leray, directing our applause toward the exciting battles occurring millions of light-years away. Imagining a day when we could own a legend for Leray, and earn the world's respect!"

Helen's meaningful words sparked a flame in everyone's hearts. The eyes of every individual lit up, twinkling, as an inexplicable anticipation surged from their hearts.

"After the outbreak of the War for National Protection, Gazalin's Level 9 Mecha Warrior Reinhardt led the Mythical Army to rampage across our land, leaving us with extremely painful memories."

The flipping photos disappeared, and the screen showed a silver and gold intertwining mecha. This mecha and its owner appeared on the network, in newspapers, and on television news. The ever-changing screen was filled with the figures of this person and this mecha!

Helen's voice was barely able to conceal her excitement: "He and his 'Apollo' were once so insufferably arrogant, so invincible. He came and went as he pleased, and all of this simply because he was the only Level 9 Mecha Warrior in these two countries!"

"Earlier, Mr. Cosmo from Free Port asserted... that our Leray has its own legend..." Helen's voice trembled, her speed increasing. Faster even than her speed was the heartbeat of every viewer.

"I know many people find this hard to believe. So..." Helen took a deep breath, nodded to the director beside her, and loudly proclaimed: "Let's watch a real combat record from the Gazalin Capital Star Mezrich, to witness a legend that belongs to our Leray people!"

An image leaped onto the screen... Amidst the embrace of three mechas, a silver and gold intertwining 'Apollo' stood silently on a hill. In the breeze, the tree crowns around swayed back and forth.
