Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 474: New Neighbor

6 PM, Becker Community.

In the backyard of the Robert family, soothing classical music was playing, and a barbecue grill was already set up on the open ground. Robert was holding a portable stove to light the charcoal.

On the right lawn, there was a white dining table and chairs. Linda was marinating the barbecue with a simple method, applying black pepper, coarse salt, and red wine to big chunks of steak.

Val and the chubby kid were chatting idly by the table, one drinking beer, the other coke.

Val teased, "Hey, Jack, why didn't you bring your little girlfriend today?"

The chubby kid rolled his eyes, "Uncle, I know you're jealous that I have a girlfriend, but don't keep mentioning it.

Besides, you're not getting any younger. It's about time you put some effort into finding one yourself."

Val forced a smile, "What? You think I don't have a girlfriend?"

The chubby kid countered, "If you have a girlfriend, why have we never seen you bring her over?"

Val shrugged, "Hey, kid, you don't understand the adult world.

It's not that I don't have a girlfriend, how could I not?

My problem is I have too many girlfriends, don't know which one to bring.

If I bring girlfriend A, girlfriend B will get jealous.

If I bring girlfriend B, girlfriend C will get jealous.

So I simply bring none, you get what I mean?"

The chubby kid "..."

"Vroom vroom..." A Mercedes G500 stopped outside the yard.

The door of the driver's seat opened, Luke came down from the car, greeted, "Grandpa, mom, uncle, and my dear little brother, happy weekend."

Val turned his head over, "Hey, detective, you're late, we've all been waiting for you."

"Sorry, I had a lot to deal with this afternoon, but luckily, it's all done now. Tonight I can have a good drink." Luke also pulled up a chair and sat down.

Val handed him a bottle of beer and curiously asked, "Has there been another big case in Los Angeles recently?"

"Nothing major." Luke shook his head, not really keen to talk about the case.

The chubby kid leaned over and asked, "Bro, do you know what grandpa is going to announce?"

Luke twisted off the beer cap and clinked bottles with Val, "That's what I want to ask, does uncle know?"

Val laughed a little, shook his head, "In your grandpa's mind, I'm on the same level as you guys.

If he didn't tell you, he naturally wouldn't tell me either."

Luke teased, "When did my level drop?"

Val "..."

At this moment, Robert's voice came from beside the grill, "Hey guys, can you smell the barbecue aroma?

Let's toast to celebrate this wonderful time." Robert enjoyed standing by the grill, raising a glass towards Luke and the others.

The barbecue aroma grew stronger, and dinner was ready.

Dinner was rather simple, grilled steak, grilled chicken wings, grilled sausages, and grilled lobster.

Linda prepared a big plate of fresh vegetables, along with Luke's favorite small cucumbers. These are refreshing and thirst-quenching, perfect for accompanying drinks.

The table was also set with various drinks, beer, wine, whiskey, and coke.

After the barbecue was served on the dining table, everyone gathered around the table for a prayer.

The family gathering officially began.

Luke first ate a charcoal-grilled lobster, which tastes better when eaten hot.

The method is simple, the lobster is cut in half, then topped with garlic sauce, and directly grilled over charcoal, the garlic sauce was bought by Luke, and it tastes great.

The chubby kid's favorite is grilled sausages, made from pork, aside from some seasoning, it's nearly all meat, one bite and the juices ooze out.

Val, like the chubby kid, also loves grilled sausages.

Linda likes grilled chicken wings, grilling the whole wing gives a better feel than just the midsection alone.

Robert's favorite is steak; after tasting it, he nodded in satisfaction, picked up his wine glass, and said to everyone, "Hey, let's raise our glasses."

"Cheers!"

The chubby kid drank a sip of coke and laughed, "Grandpa, if you opened a barbecue restaurant, I bet it'd be packed every day."

Robert shrugged with a smile, "If I were ten years younger, I might consider it, but for now, let's forget it."

Val said, "I think it's a proposal worth considering.

Dad, if you're worried about being too busy, my sister and I can help you out. We can turn the restaurant into a family business, what do you think?"

The chubby kid said with a smile, "Uncle, weren't you going to open a convenience store?"

Val added more sausage to the chubby kid's plate, "Adults are talking, kids shouldn't interrupt, hurry and eat."

The chubby kid rolled his eyes and continued to dig in heartily.

Robert looked at his son and said, "I think Jack has a point, doing any business isn't that easy. You should just concentrate on your work at the supermarket.

Even if I were to open a restaurant, I'd find an experienced partner; I wouldn't want to lose all my savings."

Luke stood up, walked to the barbecue grill to flip the meat over, and said, "Grandpa, I heard you have something to announce?"

"Yes, I've been planning a trip recently, is anyone interested in joining me?"

Val laughed, "Dad, if you cover the travel expenses, I'm definitely in."

"How old are you today? Five or fifteen?

If you're neither, I have no obligation to pay for your expenses anymore." Robert put down his knife and fork, huffed, then changed the subject,
