Sylia, the Dark & Light Saint

Cooking in Sylia’s world - List of ingredients and dishes

Here is a list of ingredients and dishes from Sylia's world.

Potatoba

A staple root vegetable found across much of the realm, larger and more abundant than the common potato. Potatobas are known for their dense flesh, mild flavor, and high yield, making them a favored crop among rural Farmers, Folks, and even Gentry households during shortages. Due to their size—often twice that of standard potatoes—one Potatoba can feed an entire family for a day.

When roasted it turns sweet and caramelized; when steamed it becomes soft and pillowy.

Though considered humble food, Potatobas are resilient in poor soil, store well over winter, and can be prepared in countless ways. In many regions, the phrase "as certain as a Potatoba harvest" is used to describe reliability or inevitability.

Brown Misso An alternative to traditional soybean miso, Brown Misso is produced exclusively from Demorsu beans rather than soy. It delivers a distinct flavor—richer, earthier, and more complex—and serves as the foundational seasoning for Sylia's soups and stews.

Demorsu Beans A staple legume of the Dramakan Enclave, Demorsu beans are used in place of soybeans to produce Brown Misso. Valued both for their firm texture and balanced taste, these beans also vary in "Mana richness," which influences the potency and depth of the miso they yield.

Dirzagel Salt A distinctive crystalline salt harvested from ancient mineral veins in the highlands around the Dramakan Enclave. Unlike typical sea or rock salts, Dirzagel Salt offers a subtly sweet undertone alongside its clean salinity, prized for its high purity.

Zukarix Black Pepper Grown in the mist-laden valleys bordering the Dramakan Enclave, Zukarix Peppercorns undergo a special fermentation process before drying. The resulting dark, aromatic powder delivers a smoky heat and complex spiciness not found in mundane pepper varieties.

Xanel Oil An oil pressed from the seeds of the Xanel tree, which flourishes in Mana-rich groves of the Dramakan Enclave. Xanel Oil is golden and smooth, with a high smoke point and a faintly nutty aroma subtly tinged by residual Mana.

Leekius

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it. A cultivated vegetable akin to earthly leeks but with three distinct cultivars, each offering a unique flavor:

Brown Leekius: earthy and robust, with woodsy overtones.

Green Leekius: crisp and sharp, lending bright freshness.

White Leekius: mild and sweet, softening bold broths.

Lightling Mana-rich Brewn Mushroom A specially grown fungus from the Dramakan Enclave, infused with Lightling Elemental Mana.

Rizio alcohol A locally distilled spirit made from Rizio grain (a wheat-like cereal). It's potent and prized enough that Slums families would trade a day off—or even children's attendance—to secure a few bottles.

Prune & Grapedan wine A rich, slightly sweet wine crafted from a blend of dried prune fruit and an Enclave native Grapedan grape. It's used to deepen and balance the flavors of Burgundi Stew.

Xandeio Birds A small game bird species whose tender meat and eggs are sold (and occasionally gifted). In the Slums, they're a sought-after treat because they're otherwise hard to come by.

Semi-vegetarian Mulkus ham

A cured, sliceable meat product made by blending Mulkus-animal meat with vegetables. It's seasoned and preserved like a traditional ham, but stretched and lightened with produce.

Badanao Bread A loaf made by mashing boiled Badanao (a banana-potato hybrid vegetable), then mixing with wheat or nut milks, flour, leavening, and nuts. It tastes faintly sweet and fits easily into Commoner budgets. Alternative to Banana Bread.

Burgundi Stew A slow-simmered meat and vegetable stew enriched with Prune & Grapedan wine and served alongside steamed Wheat-Rizio. Hearty, warming, and lightly fruited in aroma.

Nippon Curry Rice A fragrant rice dish stewed in a spice blend inspired by Eastern "Nippon" recipes—mildly spiced, slightly sweet, and typically garnished with pickled vegetables.

Xilendu vinegar A type of vinegar very common and popular among Folks because of its low price. It is used in winter cabbage preserves.

Red Pepperiosso An alternative to red pepper used mostly by Folks since it is cheaper. A spicy seasoning added optionally to cabbage preserves alongside Xilendu vinegar.

Almondioso A variant of almond used in baking and cooking. Bitter and cheaper than true almond. Considered less healthy. Other, higher-quality Almondioso variants exist but are expensive and not grown locally.

Myugal syrup A sweetener akin to maple syrup. Produced by Alchemy from Myugal leaves. More costly and mainly found in Gentry households. Can be crystallized, either naturally or magically, into Myugal sugar.

Potadiosso

A starchy root vegetable notable for its thick, knotted tendrils that resemble parasitic roots. In Sylia's cooking classes it's featured two ways:

Roasted Potadiosso develops a sweet, caramelized flavor and a slightly crisp exterior.

Steamed Potadiosso becomes uniformly soft and pillow-like in texture.

Badanao

It's a common staple across both Slum and Gentry kitchens, prized for its versatility and comforting starchiness.

A hybrid root vegetable combining traits of banana and potato. When cooked, it offers a mild sweetness reminiscent of banana alongside the starchy, comforting texture of a potato. Commonly:

Roasted: Caramelizes its sugars, yielding a slightly crisp exterior and sweet interior.

Steamed: Yields a soft, pillow-like consistency.

Culinary Uses: Mashed into Badanao Bread, added to soups, stews, or served as a side—valued for its versatility and affordability.

Herbs and Weeds Tea (or just "Weeds Tea")

A common, inexpensive infusions brewed by Slum‐dwellers from foraged plants.
