Sylia, the Dark & Light Saint

Interlude L.06 - The Magirians and the Norms

The Magirians possess extraordinary abilities due to having both Mana and Magic. Their bodies generally age more slowly than those of other Humans who are devoid of any magical gifts. The most commonly known individuals without Magic resemble the humans of your world and are referred to as the Norms. They constitute less than 2% of the population and possess neither magical powers nor supernatural physical capabilities.

Often subject to discrimination, they occupy the lowest rank in a society governed and dominated by Magic and strength.

However, their proportion within the population, as well as their influence, has been increasing, coincidentally with the growing scarcity of both Magic and Mana. This shift is not solely attributable to a diminishing gap in power between the two sub-races. Rather, it stems from the inherent physical nature of the Norms.

Unlike the Magirians, the Norms require almost no Magic or Mana feedback from the environment, starting with the air and the land. All they need is oxygen.

In contrast, Magirians depend on the Magic and Mana present in their surroundings for both survival and the maintenance of their powers. They can channel Magic and Mana to replenish their reserves or to cast higher-level Spells. At the same time, they provide Mana and Magic feedback to their environment. Primarily to the land, which absorbs a portion of this energy and reproduces it.

In other words, the Magirians and the land are mutually dependent for long-term survival. They must coexist in harmony. The Norms, on the other hand, do not require Magic or Mana from the land for anything beyond improved harvests.

The shift in influence thus becomes easier to understand. While the Norms lack any abilities, their bodies do not consume Magic and Mana from neither the land nor the air they are surrounded with. This characteristic has made them increasingly attractive to Nobles who, in the past, would never have considered even hiring them. Indeed, Nobles both provide and require significantly more Mana and Magic feedback than others. To slow the depletion of their environment's resources, they are now forced to consider employing servants without Magic—something that would have been inconceivable merely a century ago.
