What is an immortal?

Chapter 871: The Way of Fortune

Yuan Ming's figure only fell more than ten feet before a Protective Treasure Light lit up around him, stabilizing in midair for a moment. His face turned stiff as he looked up overhead.

The flock of cyan giant birds had already scattered, and the originally moonlit and sparse night sky was unknowingly obscured by a massive black shadow.

The shadow stretched endlessly from one glance. It was pure black yet seemed enveloped with a layer of moonlight, appearing somewhat hazy and indistinct, exuding an indescribably strange feeling.

Yuan Ming was certain that the earlier shrill scream had emanated from that black shadow.

His brows slightly furrowed, and his face was somewhat grave.

The emergence of this black shadow was too eerie, catching him completely off guard.

However, after waiting a moment, no more piercing screams arose, nor did any anomaly appear within that black shadow.

Yuan Ming immediately sent a message to Lei Yu, urging him to quickly increase his pace and avoid disturbing whatever lay inside the shadow.

Lei Yu hesitated not a moment, his body shimmering with cyan light and electric threads, transforming into a streak of lightning, swiftly bypassing both the shadow and Yuan Ming, speeding away ahead.

Seeing this, Yuan Ming breathed a slight sigh of relief, intending to distance himself from the area as well.

Although he did not know what peculiarities lay within, slipping away quietly was undoubtedly the best choice.

He exerted full power in his Flying Escape, his figure transforming into a rainbow. Just as he was about to catch up with Lei Yu, his gaze suddenly flickered, and his heart experienced a tremendous jolt.

Above Lei Yu's head, unknown when, another black shadow enveloped in hazy moonlight appeared.

Turning back, Yuan Ming saw that the earlier shadow had disappeared entirely.

"Damn it..."

Yuan Ming felt a sudden jolt, unable to warn Lei Yu in time.

From within that peculiar shadow, a flicker of azure and purple lightning emerged, brightening a flash of lightning, within which a massive, mountain-like blurry figure faintly appeared.

It resembled a giant bird yet had four legs, its body covered in black feathers with azure-purple arcs of electricity flashing over them.

The giant bird opened its hooked mouth wide, spewing forth a mass of azure-purple electric plasma that transformed into a gigantic tree-shaped lightning bolt, momentarily lighting up the entire night sky, striking downward toward Lei Yu.

At the critical moment, Yuan Ming's two arms morphed into two Undying Tree Roots, piercing through the void directly above Lei Yu's head. One coiled around the God Bombarding Cone, its apex pointing upward, while the other grasped the Thunder God Hammer, smashing down fiercely.

With a "boom," a burst of golden lightning erupted from the God Bombarding Cone, shooting straight into the sky, colliding with the fearsome tree-shaped lightning, resulting in a deafening rumble.

The exploding electricity scattered, transforming into countless irregular arcs and sparks, striking in all directions.

Nanshang Feng, sitting atop Lei Yu's back, looked up, mouth agape, witnessing a sight he would never forget!

The electric arcs rained down like waterfalls enveloping everything in dazzling electric light, exuding an overwhelming aura of destruction that seemed to imprison him in a giant cage made of thunder.

He believed that, without Yuan Ming intervening, he would have been obliterated long ago.

Once the electric light dissipated, Yuan Ming had already seized the opportunity to catch up.

But his hands holding the God Bombarding Cone and Thunder God Hammer were fiery red, nearly melting.

Without pausing for a breath, Yuan Ming stored away his two treasures and summoned the Exterminating Immortal Sword and Soul Destroying Sword, holding one in each hand. He infused all his mana into them, slashing upward in a crisscross motion.

Two massive sword lights flashed, crossing like scissors high above, forming an enormous cross strike that tore into the black shadow.

From within the shadow came a chilling shriek, sharp and unbearable.

Yuan Ming withstood it, but Lei Yu and Nan Shangfeng could not. The former used the demon clan's tough physique to barely continue flying, though his direction began to waver, while the latter rolled his eyes and fainted.

Lei Yu, in this unsteady state, flew over a hundred miles before finally finding respite when the shadow overhead disappeared.

Meanwhile, Yuan Ming remained vigilant, using his Divine Sense to scan the surroundings to prevent the entity from reappearing abruptly and launching another surprise attack.

Fortunately, it seemed the entity was either deterred or injured by Yuan Ming, as it did not pursue them.

Yet, their brief respite was soon interrupted as they unexpectedly flew into a thunderstorm zone, chased by countless massive lightning strikes for a quarter of an hour before finally escaping.

Afterwards, Lei Yu was too exhausted, so Yuan Ming led them to take a rest on a nearby island.

Scarcely had they set foot on the island when a massive tremor echoed from beneath the ground, and the long-dormant island volcano suddenly erupted.

Streams of lava rained from the sky, yet relying on the formation Yuan Ming set up and continuous interception, they narrowly managed to escape.

But immediately, a tsunami triggered by the volcanic eruption formed towering waves that rushed towards them.

Utterly helpless, Lei Yu had no choice but to fly above the clouds again, resulting in another attack by a group of flying demon beasts.

Yuan Ming fared a bit better, but Lei Yu was tormented to the extreme.

Nan Shangfeng was also accidentally injured, looking rather disheveled with many visible wounds on his body.

Finally freed from the demon beasts' entanglement, Yuan Ming quickly took out an elixir and consumed it, sitting down to practice Breathing Control.

"This isn't right; ever since we started flying across the ocean, we've encountered endless misfortunes. How come we're encountering all these demons, monsters, natural disasters, and catastrophes?" Nan Shangfeng couldn't help but speak up.

Yuan Ming had actually already realized something wasn't right; however, there were constant big problems and small troubles along the way, leaving him no time to think deeply until now.

"Senior Kong, you should know what's going on with the situation we're encountering, right?" Yuan Ming asked in his heart.

Between pondering it himself and seeking advice from others, he chose the latter.

After all, if Senior Kong could directly tell him the answer, it would definitely be easier and more accurate than his own guesswork.

"Being unlucky to this extent, still can't figure it out?" Surprisingly, this time Senior Kong gave a face and immediately responded.

"Is it related to that Evil Curse Altar?" Yuan Ming tentatively asked.

He actually already had a vague guess in his heart, just couldn't be completely certain yet.

After all, luck is invisible and untouchable, mysterious and elusive, hard to grasp.

"Not too dumb." Kong replied.

"So how should it be solved?" Yuan Ming immediately asked.

That's the reason he chose to ask Senior Kong, because even if he guessed where the problem was, finding a solution immediately wouldn't be easy.

And the next wave of bad luck could descend at any time.

"This thing is indeed beyond your current capability, well then, three million Spirit Stones." Kong's voice echoed in his Sea of Consciousness.

"What?" Yuan Ming didn't react momentarily.

"Give me three million Spirit Stones, and I'll tell you how to solve it." Kong replied.

"Senior Kong, not asking for Vow Power Pills this time but Spirit Stones? What do you want three million Spirit Stones for?" Yuan Ming asked curiously.

"That's not something for you to worry about. In short, if you want to know how to solve the current predicament, give me three million Spirit Stones, or think of a way yourself." Kong explained without elaboration.

"Alright, I promise you, but I don't have enough Spirit Stones right now; I'll give them to you when we reach the Central Continent." Yuan Ming hesitated slightly and said.

"Okay. The attacks from the Evil Curse Altar are far more mysterious than you think; its attacks are more obscure than your Curse Runes and almost impossible to resist or detect. Once struck, not only the physical body will be affected by the Curse Power, but luck will also be influenced." Kong explained directly.

"Luck? Are you talking about luck, Senior Kong?" Yuan Ming asked.

"Yes, you could say so. Nan Shangfeng is currently entangled with misfortune, encountering accidents wherever he goes, due to the curse affecting his luck." Kong continued.

"Such attack methods? Is there any way to counter it?" Yuan Ming felt greatly enlightened.

"To completely lift the curse is beyond your current ability, but there is a way to let him temporarily avoid the disturbance of misfortune, just need to isolate his connection with the outside world." Kong ignored Yuan Ming's astonishment and continued.

Upon hearing this, Yuan Ming felt greatly disappointed.

"I've already tried that method; I placed him in the Void Palace, but the dangers we encountered didn't lessen in the slightest, all falling on me without exception."

"Ordinary Space Spiritual Treasures can't isolate the influence of the curse on luck, but the space within the Stealing Heaven Tripod can. You just need to hide him inside to block out misfortune, reducing the curse's impact on him." Kong chuckled lightly, speaking at a leisurely pace.

Upon hearing this, Yuan Ming's eyes brightened as he turned to look at Nan Shangfeng.

Throughout the journey, Nan Shangfeng was paranoid and now seemed as skittish as a startled bird. Seeing Yuan Ming looking at him, he instinctively thought something unexpected had happened again.

"Wha- what's wrong?" he asked in panic.

Yuan Ming was about to speak when a rolling thunder suddenly came from the sea ahead.

"Why is it still not over..." Nan Shangfeng showed a bitter expression, looking as if he was about to cry without tears.

Yuan Ming raised his eyes to look into the distance, only to see that thousands of feet away, the sea waves rolled, thunder roared, and the gloomy sky seemed to have entered an apocalypse, carrying an indescribable might of heaven and earth, rolling towards them.

"Don't worry, we'll be safe soon." He withdrew his gaze and while speaking, raised his hand to pat Nan Shangfeng's shoulder.

In his palm, a colorful light appeared, and a butterfly-shaped rune flew out from his palm, circling above Nan Shangfeng's head.

Nan Shangfeng's eyes immediately took on a layer of hazy color, and he reversed his eyes, sinking into a deep dream.
