Daisy happily kicked her legs as she sat on the edge of a box, humming softly to herself as she enjoyed the scenery whizzing by. The box that she sat on was as large as a refrigerator, one of the fancy ones with two doors and an ice cube dispenser. However not even a fridge that was fully stocked with the weightiest of cheeses and brick-like meatloaf's would not weigh nearly as much as this box did.
Not only did it resemble a fridge, or even a vending machine, in size and in the way that if it toppled over it could easily crush a small child, such as the one sitting on top of it. It also resembled it in appearance.
It was, after all, a large metallic box. More rectangular on one side rather than being a perfectly even square. The only thing that was missing was the door, and the fancy ice cube dispenser.
Yet, Alexandra had it slung over her back like it was a camping rucksack, with Daisy sitting atop of it, and didn't seem to be bothered by the crushing weight or the awkward shape in the slightest. Instead she just glided over the ground without a care, leaving a miniature landslide in her wake. To a woman who could spin a semi-truck on her finger like a basketball, a simple several ton vending machine was a breeze.
The way she glided looked as if she was ice skating, but instead of blades on ice it was her bare feet on top of churning mounds of stone that surged forwards, taking her feet along with them. It was better than running, especially because she was worried about jostling their cargo.
Honestly, Alexandra was unable to be bothered by the several tonne weight on her back not just because of her strength, but because her mind was still reeling from how... easy it was to steal the damned thing.
They had just walked out of there without a care in the world, as if it belonged to them from the start, and no one batted an eye. That was even with little miss super-spy blabbing to every person they passed.
She had been worried about guards attacking her and having to fight them off, or explain herself and why she was doing something so stupid. She kept looking around, waiting for something to leap out of the ground at her or descend from the sky in some kind of ambush.
But nothing. It was just that easy. Someone even helped her with a door on their way out! It was... it was just staggering and hard to come to terms with. In her mind, when she had been told they were going to be stealing equipment from some previously top secret ex-government facility, she had expected some intricate heist full of explosions, double bluffs and weeks of planning to make the perfect plan that could seem like it was failing but was actually how they wanted it to go all along!
But no. It was the equivalent of strolling over to your neighbours house and borrowing a bag of sugar.
"Are you sure you can get any use out of this thing? I mean... How good can it be if it only fits in this tiny box. I'm telling you, we should have taken one of the bigger ones!"
Alexandra shouted over her shoulder, having to do so to make herself heard over the sound of the miniature landslides beneath her. On the top of her fancy, ice cube dispenser lacking backpack, Daisy let out a soft giggle before laying on her back and enjoying the ride.
"You betcha! Getting this one out was so much easier, plus it's one of her newer ones... I think, so It's bound to have all the good stuff! Mister Scar is gonna love it!"
"I'm not so sure it's him that we stole it for."
Alexandra muttered the last part under her breath, although it wouldn't have mattered much. The moment that Daisy laid down and her head hit the box, she was doomed to suffer from the curse of every child on a roadtrip.
Perhaps, in this moment of peace, the excitement had finally caught up with her and sapped the child's limitless energy. Whatever it was, the moment she finished her sentence she already started to doze off. By the time Alexandra was muttering, all she was replying with was soft snoring.
With silence descending once more, other than the rumbling of churning stone, Alexandra skated her way across the tranquil lands of the country once known as Scotland until they eventually met up with Scar and Cynthia.
They had set up camp in a small set of woods a few miles from the Loch that hid the facilities entrance. Easy enough to get to, but hard enough to find should anyone come looking.
Alexandra gently lowered the box to the ground, plucked the sleeping Daisy from the top and carried her over to the others, who were sitting by a small crackling fire. They were sat across from each other, laughing softly about stories past as Scar caught Cynthia up on everything that she had missed over the last year.
A massive boar, almost as big as Alexandra herself, was skewered on a wooden spear and was being roasted over the fire. Its flesh was already browning as the juices dripped down, signifying it was ready to eat. Yet the two were too engrossed in their conversations to care.
Cynthia's laughter mixed with the crackling of the fire, her smile glowing even brighter than the flames - at least in Alexandra's eyes. It should have made her feel happy to see Cynthia like that. But instead, it gave her a strange bitterness that spread across her tongue, causing her to clench her jaw and grind her teeth.
She forced that awful feeling deep inside of her, not wanting to ruin Cynthia's happiness after so long as a bowl of jello on the table, and laid Daisy down into one of their makeshift tents.
With the sour taste still lingering in her mouth, Alexandra stepped over to the fire and tore one of the Boar's hind legs off. Drumstick the size of a toddler in hand, the ground rose up behind her to form a simple stool as she plopped down and took a few large bites of the meat, hoping the tender juices would remove that sour taste.
Cynthia slid up next to her, resting her head on Alexandra's shoulder, before letting out a content sigh as her entire gelatinous body melted ever so slightly into Alexandra's arm.
A decidedly awkward silence descended upon the campfire, at least it was awkward for two of them. Cynthia was simply enjoying the moment, thinking the two of them were doing the same. For her, it had been like no time at all had passed. One moment she had been at the battle, the next she was waking up in her house.
She had nothing to be awkward about, nor realised why the other two did.
Alexandra couldn't help but send a few glares over towards Scar as he sat by the fire. Even with this delicious meat roasting in front of him, and while talking with friends, that weirdo was still wearing that mask.
She narrowed her eyes, her glare turning more suspicious than angry, as if she was trying to see through the solid mask at what he was hiding underneath.
"So... did you have time to find out where he is?"
"Yeah... we did. Well, your girlfriend did, she's the one that did all the work. I just brought back the bacon."
Scar muttered softly before letting out a muffled chuckle behind his mask. He cut off a chunk of the Boars meat, lifted his mask slightly and slid it underneath.
Alexandra narrowed her eyes more at the weird act, but turned towards the girl half melted into her arm.
She had to poke the jelly girl a few times to wake her up, but with her head still melding with Alexandra's shoulder Cynthia eagerly explained,
"Oh yeah! Reports were spotty after the battle, so tracking the movements of one guy were difficult. It would have been easier if we had the expertise of that stalker girl. Hey, whatever happened to her anyways?"
She turned to Scar, who tilted his mask and popped another bit of meat into his mouth. Without looking up from the ground and speaking in a completely monotone voice, devoid of any care or emotion, he answered.
"She went away."
Cynthia tilted her head, a slimy question mark sprouting out of the top of her head before she shrugged.
"Hmm, oh well. Anyways, it took a while but we eventually found him. He moved around for a while before settling down near the coast and since then he hasn't moved a muscle. Probably Literally considering what this guy can do.
We only found him there because of reports of strange monsters appearing around the coastal town."
"Strange monsters? What's that mean? Like a mermaid or something."
"Even better! They said there were pirates. Ghost pirates!"
