Threads of the Soul

Chapter 370: Paranormal Activity

"Dad? Are you here? Is everything okay?"

Nixie rubbed the sleep from her eyes and let out another small yawn as she wandered into the control room, her bare feet padding gently against the cold metallic floor. Her arms were wrapped tight around Honey, keeping the badger clutched against her chest and forcing her to dangle awkwardly.

Her head and front paws hooked over Nixie's arms, while the rest of her body simply hung in the air, swaying with each step and swinging when Nixie spun around. Honey could have fought against it, but it was pointless. She had learned it the hard way.

Plus... The human did give nice hugs. They were bone crushingly tight, but that's what made them good. Nothing could squeeze her tight enough to make her properly feel it, and for Honey those bone crushing hugs were simply cosy and warm. Not that she would ever admit it properly.

She simply allowed the human to hold her and carry about, as her servant of course. No need for the superior to get their paws dirty when their subordinates could carry them. That was definitely the only reason.

Glancing around the empty room, Nixie frowned softly. This was were the strange feeling had come from, wasn't it? And she was sure that her dad had been having his nap in here. So where was he?

She strolled over to his avatar, knocking on its face gently and listening to the sound reverberate inside of its hollow body. Poking her finger against its forehead, she lifted the head up so she could look into its eyes, but they were completely hollow and distant.

"Dad are you in there? Hellooooo. Where are you? I thought I- AGH!"

Nixie leapt out of her skin, immediately shooting into the air and whirling around only to find nothing there. Her heart thundering in her chest as she breathed heavily, confusion painting her face.

She was sure something touched her there...

She whirled around in the air a few more times, Honey's body swinging back and forth in her arms while the badger simply hung there without a care. But no matter where Nixie looked, there was nothing.

Frowning softly, she glanced down at her leg where she had felt something touch her, just in case it was a stray hair or something, only to find a severed hand clutching her ankle.

A shrill scream quickly escaped Nixie's mouth as she kicked her leg out, launching the hand across the room. It slammed against the wall, pausing for a second before clattering to the ground limply.

Nixie breathed deeply, panting as her heart threatened to leap from her throat. Now that she looked closely, it was just her dad's prosthetic. It must have just gotten caught on her foot and she accidentally pulled it from the harness.

Yes... that had to be it. But why would he leave it on the floor in the first place?

Touching back down to the ground, Nixie nervously walked over to the hand to pick it up. But it seemed the hand had other ideas.

The fingers twitched on their own, before curling and flexing as if they were groggy and still recovering. After a few seconds, they planted against the floor and lifted the entire arm off the ground, before quickly scuttling towards her.

The fingers danced across the ground like an insect as it shot towards her. She shrieked again, lifting her foot and slamming it down, trying to stamp out the insect.

Shudders travelled through the entire ship as she slammed her heel down, the hand insect quickly darting to the side to avoid being squished underneath it. She stomped over and over, trying to crush the rogue hand, as it kept leaping around and avoiding her.

It darted between her legs, its finger-legs clacking against the floor as it quickly crawled over to Seth's abandoned avatar and started to climb up its leg.

It hopped from his leg to his arm, then scuttled up and planted itself on his shoulder, gripping it tight. When the Avatar began to shudder underneath the rogue hands grip, Nixie quickly dropped Honey and shot over to it, lunging towards the hand.

"Get away from my Dad you monster hand! I won't let you possess him too!"

"Nixie, stop! It's me possessing it! Just listen to me and-"

The Avatar's head shot up, life returning to its metallic eyes as it started to plead with her in her father's voice. However, Nixie was a little too worked up to listen right away, and by the time she realised what it had been saying she had already ripped the hand off of the Avatar's shoulder.

As soon as the hand had lost its grip, the Avatar's head had slumped forwards once more, its face freezing solid mid sentence as its mouth hung open.

Nixie frowned at the Avatar, before blushing slightly and turning her head towards the hand in her grip. She smiled sheepishly, letting out a few nervous laughs as the hand drummed its fingers against its own thumb.

It had no eyes nor eyebrows, but she could still feel it's disappointed glare and the dreaded raised eyebrow of her father.

"Ahehe... Whoops. Sorry."

She gently placed the hand back on the Avatar's shoulder, giving it a little pat on the top as her second apology, before turning to the head of the Avatar. By the time her eyes landed on it, the head had already come to life, and assumed the disappointed and irritated glare she had been imagining.

At least there was no eyebrow this time.

"Thank you. Now, as I was saying, switch to your other eyes sweetheart. It will be easier to show you what's going on."

Nixie frowned deeply. Other eyes? She only had one set of eyes. What was he supposed to mean by- Ohhhh! Her other eyes.

If one had the capability to see souls, they would have seen a draconic head emerge from Nixie's own head. It followed her movements, mimicking them perfectly. Just like her, it closed its eyes and bowed its head as she concentrated.

Then, after a moment, it opened its eyes which began to glow with a dazzling, ethereal white.

However Honey, who had decided to climb onto the metal man's lap and use it as a comfortable seat, had no such capability. She glanced between the two strange parties, her head turning between them curiously as she watched the exchange with no idea of what was going on.

When Nixie opened her eyes, her real eyes, they had changed. Her pupils had become vertical slits while the rest of them glowed pure white. When Honey looked into those eyes, she felt an instinctual shudder travel through her body.

It brought with it a strange feeling, one she had never felt before. However as she shuddered more, shrinking back slightly, she realised she had seen it in others before. A lot of times before, in fact.

It was Fear. The natural fear every beast felt when confronted with something naturally superior to them. Plenty of creatures had looked at Her with the same feeling in their eyes, but never had she been the subject of it.

Before those eyes, before this girl, she felt like prey. Useless, feeble prey. It was... disgusting.

Honey quickly shook away the feeling, puffing herself up in her comfortable seat and stirring her ego to chase away the growing fear. Yes... This girl was really the ultimate opponent for her. Their battles would be glorious. For once in her life, Honey didn't feel like she was good enough. Not yet anyways.

She was filled with the urge to grow stronger, so she could impart this feeling in the girl. Yes, that was when she would be truly superior, as she deserved. Until that day, she definitely couldn't let this girl out of her sight.

Oblivious to the thoughts of the devious, egotistical badger, Nixie blinked her new eyes a few times as she got used to the new vision. When she looked at Honey, causing the badger to puff out her chest in defiance, all Nixie could see was a small flame inside a badger shaped silhouette.

However her own hands appeared like a lizard's paws with giant talons were the fingers should be.

"Yeah, It's a weird sight at first. But you'll get used to it."

She raised her head at the sound of her fathers voice, her slitted eyes widening as she finally found the answer to her question of where he was. He had been here the entire time.

A ghostly version of her father floated behind his Avatar, his spectral legs drifting through the air uselessly as he lay horizontally on his belly like he was floating in a swimming pool. His arm was absorbed into the prosthetic while his head had been plunged through the back of the Avatar's head, creating a strange sight of two bodies but one head. Weird was definitely right.

"You're... a ghost? But I don't understand. Why don't you just possess the body fully?"

"That's the problem... I don't know how. Think you can teach your dad how to fly?"
