Threads of the Soul

Chapter 349: Grand Theft UFO

Taking his spear back from Nixie, since his hoverboard was still back in the Loch Ness cave, Seth lifted into the air. Although she could fly on her own, he kept the little troublemaker in his arms. Mostly because he enjoyed holding her, but also so she didn't accidentally push any self destruct buttons.

If anyone was going to do that, it would be him.

Sparks crackled around Astra as she joined Seth in his ascent, while Bob simply dissolved into a swirling cloud of dust that drifted through the air. Leaving the poor stray Director alone on the ground.

Watching them ascend into the air like gods, the Director glanced around quickly before rushing over to the nearest scissor lift. He clambered onboard, shutting the gate behind him only for it to melt in his hand.

When his fingers jabbed at the buttons, they simply sank into a puddle of bubbling, molten plastic and fried the electronics inside. Cursing to himself, the Director leapt from the scissor lift and hurried over to the next lift he could find.

A process he repeated over and over, as he kept melting everything that he touched.

Unaware, and uncaring, of the Directors hot handed troubles, Seth's group floated throughout the air without issue. Eventually they reached the height of the pilots head, or where it should be, which allowed them a good look over the entirety of the control panel.

"Well Mr. Spock, which button will you push to take us where no man has gone before?"

With dry sarcasm, Astra gestured to the control panel roughly the size of a football field, with all of the various buttons unsurprisingly written in an alien language. It was unfortunately not the same as the runic language Seth had spent his time learning.

While that language was flowing and made of compound symbols, allowing a single rune to mean an entire sentence, this language was made up of individual words forming a single sentence, at least from what they could tell.

The words were different symbols made up of sharp, quick strokes. Like they were made to be carved into stone with a sword, or a claw. Most likely, it would have been the language of Prometheus' species, what they called Dragons.

"Mr. Spock was the science officer. Kirk was the captain. Besides, I always saw myself as more of a roguishly handsome smuggler pilot, Han Solo style."

He winked at her and shot her a charming smirk, causing her to roll her eyes in response. But even still she couldn't fully hold back the slight smile tugging at her lips.

"Uh huh... sure you do. Plus, I know that, I'm not a total idiot. I called you that because you're a dork. But a cute one."

She flew over, pinching his cheek and patting it softly before quickly moving away so he couldn't retaliate. Flipping in the air, Astra drifted over the giant control panel, which suddenly lit up as power flowed through it.

Flinching as it whirred and hummed to life, Astra thought it was her fault for a second before she turned around and found Seth standing atop one of the buttons, a smug smile on his face.

"I thought I would start with the 'On' button, but maybe you had a better plan."

"You can read that? How? It's not even in the nerd language you've been learning."

"I'll have you know that 'Nerd Language' is responsible for this adorable little angel right here. But now that you mention it... Yeah, I can. Why can I?"

Seth lifted into the air again, letting the ship power up as he frowned at the buttons. His first glance over, the words were just translated in his mind, so he thought that it was just a quirk of the communication devices, like they did with speech. After all, they both had one now since they 'liberated' them from the corpses after the war.

But if Astra couldn't read them, then it was definitely not a communication gift quirk.

"It must be something Prometheus did. Seems he wasn't just uploading knowledge about runes into my mind. I wonder why you didn't get that part of the upload."

"Probably because I was too busy saving your life to get the alien language cheat sheet."

"A fair price to pay, I'd say. What would you do without me afteral- Ow!"

Seth rubbed his arm, a small scorch mark on his skin, as Astra blew the smouldering smoke from the tip of her finger like it was the barrel of a gun. She gave him a smug smile in return, which only made him laugh softly.

Finally, the system finished its booting sequence as a robotic voice spoke from the console in front of them, echoing throughout the entirety of the room as it boomed at such a deafening volume. It spoke in a language consisting of a lot of short grunts and throaty rumbles, but thankfully this was translated into both of their minds.

{System Initialised. Present Identification.}

A small panel opened on the console and a small robotic arm pushed its way out. Well, it was small in comparison to the rest of the console, but to them it was like the Kraken was reaching one of its tentacles out from the depths of the ocean.

On the end of this tentacle was a lens, which projected a light that swept over Seth. It scanned him from head to toe, then back to his head before cutting off the light.

{Identification failed, User not recognised. Present Identification. Intruders will be eliminated.}

Panels on the roof slid open, as turrets popped themselves out and aimed directly at the floating family. Sparks flew around Astra and Bob's dust cloud started to swirl into a tornado as the guns started to hum. A threatening red light building in the depths of their barrels as they drew power from some unknown source.

Judging by the ominous feeling he was getting from those turrets, Seth had absolutely no confidence that he could survive a singular blast from them. Especially because he didn't have nearly enough mana to power his shield to max, not that he felt it would matter much.

'Prometheus gave me the knowledge of his language. He wanted me to have this ship, I'm sure of it. Or at the very least, let Nixie have this ship.

Why would he give me this knowledge just to get myself killed by his ship? Knowledge! Oh you idiot!'

Seth quickly summoned his journal, the book floating in the air as its cover opened and the pages rapidly flicked one after the other, until it stopped on a page written in the same language as the control panel.

Pushing the journal towards the mechanical tendril, Seth shouted as loud as he could so the ship would be able to hear his tiny voice over the dreadful hum of their impending doom.

"Identification presented! Scan and register a new user!"

He had no idea if what he was saying was right, but the ship responded nonetheless. The mechanical eye turned towards the journal, projecting its light and scanning the presented contents.

The moments of silence between the scan finishing and the ship speaking once more were deafening, and stretched on for eternity. You could hear a pin drop across the entire length of the room, which meant they had no problem hearing the wheezing breathes of the Director as he clambered onto the control panel and ran across its length.

It had taken him eight attempts to get his heat under control long enough to not melt the buttons as he was using them. But finally he made it up onto this giant, oversized control panel just as the ship spoke again.

{Identification confirmed. Transfer of ownership confirmed. Welcome aboard Captain. The ship will now re-configure to suit new users biology, please stand-by.}

The floating family let out sighs of relief, except for Bob who didn't breathe and Nixie who found it all highly amusing, as the mechanical tendril retreated back into the hole it came from. The panel shut with a heavy clunk before a pulse moved over the surface of the control panel.

Like a pebble being thrown into a tranquil lake, Seth could see a ripple moving over the smooth metal surface as it literally came to life.

The pulse didn't stop at the edge of the control panel. Instead it moved down the legs of the panel and spread across the entirety of the ships interior, before everything started to shift. Just as the Director was regaining his breath, the ground beneath his feet turned to liquid.

He stumbled backwards, but when he fell the ground rose up beneath him and caught him, acting as a cushion as it kept him aloft while the ground disappeared around him.

Seth and company had to lower themselves down as not just the ground moved, but the ceiling and the entire ship dissolved into a living swarm of nano-machines that moved as a singular cloud, restructuring the ship around them.
